Good question KP9000! Yes, I will be adding a ton of asm hacks that the editor can implement that expands the capabilities of not only the game, but the editor too, such as adding an expansion patch and mapper swap (to MMC5 )

I have the object selector in now, wooo hoo!!

MMC5 (and maybe Sunsoft FME7) is great, Assuming you remake the IRQ code.

If you have enough of the SMB3 music format notes, You might make a Music editor also.

It's looking good. Hey, I hope you will allow the user to edit the mushroom houses too. As far as I know, you can't do that in SMB3WS.

Ok, after serious debate, I've decided to my editor into a sharp left turn.

This editor WILL NOT LET YOU EDIT NORMAL ROMS.

This is how this will work:

You will start a "project". Provide a vanilla SMB3 rom and my editor will format it to use MMC5, clear out ALL LEVEL DATA, expand the rom.

You will create ALL LEVELS FROM SCRATCH. However, I will allow a "port from rom" tool. All levels will be saved in separate files. Once you're ready to test your ROM, you will "compile" the project and the editor will inject all necessary data...

Why am I doing this? SMB3 Workshop provides all the simple stuff you'd ever need. If you really want to hack SMB3 in an awesome way, you'll want to be a "power hacker" and do everything from scratch, rather than applying a bunch of patches to a vanilla SMB3 rom and change a few graphics.

Sharp left turn, eh? Looks like you turned the wheel right.

Now THAT is how all editors should be - wipe everything out, provide a couple of improvements, plenty of space, and THEN it lets you party hard with level designing.

Good luck with that. I presume we'll be able to resize the overworlds before you're done slicing the game to bits?

I'm sure people already know the difference, but let's state this in the thread anyways. DD, What are the advantages and features of having an expanded ROM with MMC5? What can you do with this enhanced ROM that you couldn't do before?

I presume you can have more banks, thus more levels, new music, more space for ASM, more anything...

Here's what I've gotten done today:

What you see here: the Object selector is dockable. Palette editing is done in real-time so you can see the changes rather than opening and closing a dialog box. To change a palette, just right click it and you see the palette selector (shown). And, by the way, the colors are only different because I made them that way, the editor actually displays things properly

You can move objects forward/backward in stack priority (send to back, bring to front). Cut, Copy and Paste is in.

Grey: yes, you will be able to change the size of your world maps

I dunno, the fact that you will be able to upgrade the mapper and expand the rom through the editor is cool, but I don't think it should be automatic. I'd say leave those two features as an option and leave it up to the person making the hack. I do really like the idea of starting with blank levels though.

I'd like to know if use MMC5 may cause problems with compatibily for some reason?

I am reaching one year of development in my hack (11 months and 1 day to be exact), yesterday I reached W7, I will delay my hack the necessary time to make it a true good hack, so, maybe when Ultimate SMB3 editor be released, I will be able to add more levels, more features and maybe, new musics!

DahrkDaiz, this is a litte off topic, but you when you use the "Bowser's Background" tiles in the hill level, it acts like water. You can swim in it. You wouldn't happen to know the byte I have to change to make it not-water? I'm going to go look for it now, but if you knew what it was, it would save me the trouble.
