Okay, I just added a sensibility check to the battle system. Opponents now won't use moves that don't make sense, so no Helping Hand in single battles and no putting sleeping monsters to sleep, stuff like that.

Good for you Kawa, I thought you'd given up. Awesome.
Also, come back to #acmlm =[

New version — same basic game, less bugs. Same link too.

* copy-paste *

Open
• Paralysis is applied after fainting — just that. Paralysis should check for fainted status.
• Help system doesn't set all things, so the cursor might be outside of the screen or the whole thing's a little darker.

Unconfirmed resolved
• Writes in mirrored or invalid VRAM areas

Resolved with a cheap trick
• Game freezes just before Cearn battle — somehow, the dialogue box statemachine doesn't like very long strings. "Fixed" by cutting Cearn's lines in half.

Resolved
• Running speed is equal to walking — it is so! It's just hard to see.
• Things on the map sometimes use the wrong sprite — randomizer gave weird results, fixed by using unsigned int
• Characters can move into the same spot when both are moving at the same time — because the sprite collission checker should test the tile being walked to. Thanks to tepples from GBADev for suggesting this.
• When spotted by a trainer to the right, the player uses a "zapped" sprite instead of looking right — facing = ( facing + 2 ) % 4.
• Helping Hand — most enemy moves are now checked for sensibility.
• Growl, Tail Whip et al affect user
• Potions heal above max HP — thanks, Cearn!

Not bugs at all
• No Poké Balls to catch with — try pressing Right in the inventory screen.
• No weather effects — only fog is implemented, and has no effect on battle.
• No sound — sound has been left out of the demo to cut download size. Also, the engine used is illegal.
• Levelling up goes really fast — done on purpose. You get triple experience for demonstration purposes.
• Backpics do not use chosen colors — now fixed.
• Conversion failed — effect missing. Conversion is just one of them. Missing effects auto-fail.

Finally, a playable OP that actually works.
This version isn't perfect, but at least it has some of the worst glitches fixed.
Just fix all the glitches associated with the "switch Pokemon in battle" system and some other things in battle, and it will be a lot better.
This is what the original demo should have been.

Some other remaining glitches or plain annoying things:
+ Scrolling while walking feels weird
+ Sprite tiles are glitched when walking out of building during the "fade in" animation
+ Can walk out during Nurse Joy's speech
+ Getting $0 for battles
+ After learning a new move in battle, old enemy Pokemon's info bubble is glitched
+ While using a potion, in the Pokemon list, text messes up (while HP is increasing)
+ Pikachu is already confused! Pikachu became confused!

Scrolling while walking feels weird

Mind elaborating?

You get no cash for winning a battle because we don't know the win cash formula yet. Only the lose cash one.

These bugs and stuff are now being added to the big list for fixing.

I rushed through, and went right to battling Cearn, afterwards I fought a Pidgey that sends out more fainted Pidgeys after I fainted it.

These battles continued until I beat a Trainer.

Why not make a function with a lose cash formula pulled out from your ass? Then replace it with a more proper one later?

Nah, we got it. Just need to make (and or find) a table.

Prize money = highest level in opponent's party * trainer type specific multiplier value.

kawa is no longer the flamers' favorite 'miss prissy bitch',

i have upgraded you to mister 'GET'R DONE'

congrats kawa,

just remember,

never title a thread 'i have no idea why i am even posting this' ever again

btw open poke is coming along great!

good work!

keep it coming!

remember HAM can't simply optimize:

• When spotted by a trainer to the right, the player uses a "zapped" sprite instead of looking right — facing = ( facing + 2 ) % 4.

instead of using:
facing = ( facing + 2 ) % 4;

use:
facing^=0x2;

it does the exact same effect when only dealing with 0 thru 3.

only instantaneously.

Compiler optimizations, dude.

A compiler would have to show a very deep amount of insight into the code to do this optimization (one I, in fact, doubt most modern compilers possess) though, seeing as it would need to correctly recognize that facing always stays within the 0..3 range at that point.

i already told you compiler optimizations are weak at best, and would never be intelligent to optimize as well as my example.

btw to test if the character is zapped or some other animation rather than simply facing:
notfacing=!!(facing&~0x3);

returns in the form of either TRUE or FALSE.

(this assumes facing is any of 0 thru 3)

-edit-

if the compiler were smart enough to optimize to that it would be smart enough to tell you in advance about the glitch you had to fix.

-edit-

here are the 3 sources i randomly google hit when double checking that i wasn't giving you bogus code examples.

pressions/bitops.html>FredOSaurus.com :: C++ Notes: Bitwise Operators:

MSDN2.Microsoft.com :: Assignment Operators: =, *=, /=, %=, +=, -=, <<=, >>=, &=, ^=, and |= (C++):

CPlusPlus.com :: Operators

I call total bullshit on jargon. I'm not using HAM at all. The whole compiler optimization thing is now redundant.

In other news, I just found out that the image conversion program I use can take PNG files, making the source data up to 75% smaller :3

Original map format now implemented (in the official aka my build) so now people can freely use maps they've created from their own hacks without fail no more worrying about having to start over from scratch! Sorry, Kawa =)

It is not very much at all but it's a step in the right direction!!

Except they wouldn't work the same way as in people's hacks because of your improperly implemented map format :3 they would only work the way YOU configured the tilesets. Tile by tile individualization is lost in your engine =(

Once again. Pictures or it didn't happen. Are you going to provide any proof? If not, get out of this thread and make your own.
