OP has disappointed me. The screenshots looked great, I couldn't wait for the demo. You were talking about it constantly.
Then I played it.
Disappearing tiles, broken messages, infinite-loop battles, glitched Pokemon. This really needs some major edits to be decent.

[13:06:43] <+Treeki> Pikachu used Slam! Foe Pikachu fainted!
[13:07:02] <+Treeki> Will you switch Pokemon?
[13:07:07] * +Treeki selects no
[13:07:14] <+Treeki> Your opponent sent out Pikachu!
[13:07:28] <+Treeki> *fainted Pikachu is sent out*
[13:07:33] <+Treeki> Your opponent is about to send in Pikachu.
[13:07:41] <+Treeki> Will you switch Pokemon?
[13:07:44] * +Treeki selects no again
[13:08:02] <+Erika> ...
[13:08:30] <+Treeki> I learned Thunderbolt. Now some graphics glitched up in battle and Pikachu fainted.
[13:09:22] <+Treeki> Your opponent is about to send in Pikachu. Will you switch Pokemon? *no* Your opponent sent out Pikachu! *fainted Pikachu appears* Your opponent is about to send in Pikachu. Will you switch Pokemon? *no* Your opponent sent out Pikachu!
[13:09:33] <+Treeki> What should Pikachu do?
[13:09:37] * +Treeki chooses Slam
[13:09:45] <+Treeki> Pikachu is paralysed! It can't move!
[13:09:59] <+Treeki> Your opponent is about to send in Pikachu... forget it.
[13:10:02] * +Treeki closes VBA.
[13:10:32] <+Treeki> And if I select I want to switch and press B on the switch screen, even more glitches up.
[13:11:46] <+Erika> yep. it would 8D
[13:12:23] <+Treeki> Pikachu, that's enough. Come back. *(?) pokemon appears on my side* Go! ! Your opponent sent out Pikachu! *choose Pokemon screen appears; I press B* Go ! ! Your opponent sent out Pikachu! used -! But there was no PP left for the move! *choose Pokemon screen appears*
[13:12:50] <+Treeki> after that it's a little more weird behaviour (like the ? pokemon fainting) and then it's back to the first loop
[13:14:19] <+Erika> rofls.

As Erika has said - there should be absolutely no need to edit memory to get past a part of a game. Was this not tested before release? You've had months to work on it.
Where are all the nice effects you showed in screenshots or told us about?
The times of day? The Pokedex? The weather?
Maybe a future version of this will not suck as much. For now, I've lost faith in OP.

Wow, what a thread, seriously, even though I have no idea how this all started. Anyone care to explain what this drama's all about, because I'm confused.

okay, but pay attention

kawa hypes demo near-daily, calling it best thing since sliced bread
screenshots of weather effects, night/day system, etc posted
tons of features claimed to be in

actual demo is about as good as explosive diherrea

there's a short summary to get you up to speed.

You...really shouldn't have to do that.

If I'm playing a game, the common user shouldn't have to go in to a MEMORY EDITOR to get past part of the game. Says a lot about the quality right there.

Yeah, this.

This might be passable for a private test, but as a demo? Grossly insufficient.

Okay, I would like to ask several participants in this thread (Erika, Treeki, Xk - okay, you won't get another chance to) to stop trying to get Justus drama to spill over to here. -.-

From what I've seen of the posts over on Justus, most seemed more like coordinated or spontaneously organized ("bandwagoning") bashery than constructive criticism. We don't need that kind of garbage here, so keep it civil.

Yeah, the demo has glitches, but I think it would be fairly solid if just the most notable few of them were fixed, being the RNG (I think the Mersenne Twister algorithm is something you could get implemented on GBA hardware with ease) and the more notable crashes.

You might as well close this anyway, the project's been stolen back :3 Kawa won't be working on this anymore (if he does it's only going to be in vain)

I didn't spill over any drama, I was trying to inform the people last time I be a good samaritan, hmph ;(

The good thing about data is that you can copy it as many times as you want without the original copies being lost.

And I have yet to see you get anywhere with it.

Instructions from above, 'eh?

So much for "this is totally not planned and orchestrated and entirely done out of our own drive".

While I think just letting this quote (thanks for this valuable piece of information~) do the talking and not saying anything anymore would have been an efficient enough solution, I don't see how
- board2 should care about who you ban in your little world
- presenting his demo, regardless of how "bad" or "good" it is, over here can be interpreted as "bringing drama here"
- you get a "nobody likes his buggy piece of bullshit" when the only such extreme opinions expressed were from Justus members who automagically decided to become active here all of a sudden after months of dwelling in their own hole

Further attempts to make this thread slide into drama won't be tolerated. Before I even consider closing it, I'll rather phone Ailure out of sleep/whatever else he might be doing so he can issue speedy bannings on further perpetrators.

Why all those overly reactions over a tech demo?

Grow up people. It's expected to be buggy. I wouldn't care if there was a bug that would remove all data halfways. I don't care how hyped it was, but most of this thread was just a constant bashfest. Any further non-constructive bashing will lead to a ban.

I'm confused, since when are we not allowed to state our opinion on something? We are just supposed to tell Kawa that it's an amazing demo and that it is Godlike? I played it, I disliked it, I'm giving my opinion, it is not fucking hivemind you morons. Even you Blackhole, know that it is flawed. It may be a demo and is supposed to show what OpenPoke is like, but it's a bad demo. We aren't allowed to say that? What's the point of making a thread? Might as well just make the thread and close it so noone can post in it, Christ.

I also find it hilarious that you, Kawa, of all people are saying such things, because not too long ago you were always backing us up and had liked Jul and Xkeeper. You posted goatse, got banned, and now you are crying about it and throwing names at Xkeeper. Like that's supposed to do anything. Propping up flacid egos is a terrible practice, stop trying to make yourself feel better.

There's a huge difference between criticism and flaming.

Criticizing would be pointing out that there's allot of glitches, but acknowledging it's a work in progress.

Flaming is saying that it's the worst thing ever because of said glitches, while using metaphors comparing it to other stuff.

Blackhole's post is a good example of good criticism. He still points out flaws and bugs, without having to use a single swear word or metaphors involving digested remains.

It's great that someone is making something like OP, but this demo really shouldn't have been released. If you post a demo, there should be few-to-no glitches (especially none that crash the program).
This still has the potential to be awesome, sure, and maybe what he has is, but what he showed us is not. Next time, post a working demo that doesn't glitch everywhere and you'll get a bunch of positive replies.

I assume you are using JavaDoc style, considering you talked something about DoxyGen.

Bit of a request too, so it would be easier for others to understand the source code.

Doxygen... I remember how somebody proposed following that style for Janus.

We dissed it because it looked too bloated and we would have wound up with a like 3:1 comment:code ratio.

This whole discussion forced me to (re-)register and loose some words...

First of all: Congratulations to Kawa, your little demo may be far away from being a final, but as someone stated before, nobody could have expected a flawless game.

I think most of you here are forgetting that this game is a HOMEBREW. Compared to commercial Pokémon games (or some of the better hacks made for them), OpenPoké must seem like crap right now. On the other handside, I really would like to see how good the official games would be, if they had been created under the same conditions as OpenPoké is now - regarding to the size of the development team, the effective time-per-person spent, the overall education and practical experience of the team members, the money available...

Keeping this in mind, this demo is not too far away from what you could have expected... and without that drama and flaming and stuff, it would have been safe to say that it sure has a chance for progress.
Ever seen an official demo released by Nintendo? I don't think they would have been any better...

As a last comment to the flamers: Don't like it? Try to make it better than Kawa... if you can't, you can't talk like that...

*logging out again* - I prefer being a read-only-member; to much drama for me
