So optomon and I were talking tonight, and we realize that no one ever talks about this. I mean I'm sure there's been threads like this in the past, but it's really rare. So here goes. What, in your opinion, is the best rom hack ever? It can be for any game, or system. So share some of that opinionated goodness.

ASSFAG (Actually I can't remember if that's from MegaCrap or another one)
Save that for when I'll probably end up making a "Worst Rom Hack Evar" Thread. That's where we will get to chronicle the days of "1 GAYOR GAYO"

As far as my actual opinion. I'm going with SMB3: Some Usual Day it's one of the few hacks I've played a bunch of times. If Bio World was completed I would probably pick that one.

For me, it'll have to be...

1. Dragoon X Omega II
2. Mario Adventure
3. Mario: Some Usual Day
4. Legend Of The Blob Bros. 2
5. Castlevania: Chorus Of Mysteries

I would have put more hacks up if some of the others I was looking foward to were finished. ^^'

Brutal Mario, simply for the ingenuity of it. Also, Sonic Megamix gets an honorable mention.

In terms of overall hacking achievement and impressivity, it's got to be the seventh demo of Kichikuou Mario (鬼畜王マリオ, the "official" translation is "Brutal Mario" but it's more something like "Brute King Mario"). Then, there's also the SMO demo... Juggling Joker's SMW hack from way back, in terms of graphics changes... ATA's Extra Mario Bros. ... Mario Adventure...

Honestly, I can't think of anything else but Mario game hacks to list here beyond this point. The level hacking of those attained is far above any others I know.

I changed my mind. Someone needs to do a translation of Moemon so I can have a new most favorite ROM hack EVAR!

Super Metroid Redesign is incredibly awesome and polished.

There's also this SMB hack I have that can almost cause physical pain.

You know, I just realised how difficult it is to objectively determine what the greatest rom hack is. I haven't played through most hacks. There seem to be 5 qualities that can be changed in a game- programming, control, level design, graphics, and sound. Whichever games extensively alters any of these elements the most for the better would seem to be the best. Modifying the games programming seems to be the most impressive feat.

If I wanted to determine which one I felt was the best, I'd probably have to play these games and see for myself. I admit that I haven't played too many of them though.

Zelda: Parallel worlds and the Dragoon X series, these should be shown as good examples to new hackers.

I'd have to say both Rockman Exile and Rockman No Constancy have to be the best Megaman hacks I've ever played.

Actually, despite all its annoyances, I found Parallel Words to be a rather awesome hack, and definitively the best LoZ3 one so far...

CKY-2K: At least detail your opinion. What you are doing is just spamming.

I like it but like this one guy said, whoring a hack around spontanious difficulty is really annoying. This is why I hate those Mario hack that aquire glitch exploitation and shit because it's just really retarded. I wanted to play Mario, not some other glitch game. If I wanted to play a precision game I'd play operation or bopit or some crazy shit like that.

Thank you for saying those about those Mario hacks, I felt I was the only one who felt that way about those. Especially "HARD" hacks where you die 30 times just to get through the first level. Hard does not equal fun.

Heh, it's tricky to balance difficulty, even if your goal is a challanging hack.

A common cheap trick is designing the level in a such way that the player have no idea what happens in advance (such as having to take a blind jump to the next platform...).

Hmm, only hack that comes up to my mind is Mario Adventure. For a non-mario hack, I do remember enjoying the Jonbound hack... despite it's limitations.

Why is everyone listing Mario hacks and only one person mentioning a SM hack?
