I was looking through all of my CDs that I've been holding onto for years, so I stumbled on this hack translation that I forgot I burned, all the info you need to know is in the readme file. I figure somma you might wanna take a look at this, and without further ado, screens...

And there's that Swedish translation of SMB.



I can understand such translations for RPG's but for really simple games it seems to boil down to "I'm bored and lazy."

Yes, I remember that translation hack quite well and the guy who made it. I think that was when #romhacking on Dalnet was still around.

Yes, it's a translation from English to Jananese. I remember when I and Laxidman was talking about it. He thought that there should have been a Japanese version of the game. The rom has severe space issues as many are aware of. So that was a challenge for him at the time to get all of the text in there and the Japanese title screen.


I haven't seen Laxidman in ages, I wonder how he is doing.

Actually, no, it wasn't. There was no "original" Japanese version.

I remember the guy who did this remarking that it was very technically difficult, as something needed to be expanded to allow for more tiles in the font.

I can imagine how hard it was to pull this off back in the days, I give props to this translation. Last I heard of Laxidman he was going to college, but that was back in 2005 when TekHacks had their last message board.

Yes. that was a challenge and one he pulled off quite nicely. Yes, 2005 is about the last time that I saw him as well. I wonder what happened to TekHacks.

Lesse, after Tek had their last Acmlm Board in 2k5, the board kept getting hack attacks. And Solid-tbone pretty much gave up with Tek & Rom hacking, so Chaos Force took over and people were harassing Tek to just die etc.

In 2k6, Block Lord was gonna bring back Tek under the new name Phoenix Studios. But it didn't get off the ground either, and the Tekhacks domain expired last year. Everyone went pretty much their own way that used to apart of Tek, I did an archive search for anyone who wants to take a gander here. There were more pages the last time I looked back in time.

The wonders of googling oneself.

I've always wondered if anyone actually downloaded the SMB1j patch.

Regarding reasons for doing the project, when I was given the chance to help test FCEUD, I ended up recalling an old thread on Zophar's Domain about the legality of rom translations and Shadow/D-Boy's response with a sarcastic suggestion to do a E->J SMB1 translation. I forget what led to that suggestion but the response was amusing enough to remember and thus when I had to do asm work to help test FCEUD, it was the first thing to pop into my head.

It entertained me and I helped find bugs.

Inquiries about why there is english text can be found in the readme. The Laxidman of 5 years ago can explain things better than the Laxidman of today.

The short of it is that I modeled it after the Japanese language Mario releases, even took the font from one of them.

Fun note: I also tried releasing this patch on various sites, apparently nobody found the humor in it .

Ummm, you might be thinking of Super mario bros the lost levels, Thats was only released in japan because they thought it was too hard for us americans and then it became download-able in english.

If it's a translation, then why is the text at the top still English? I can understand if the numbers aren't translated because the number system may be different, but I don't see why that text isn't. D:

Pieguy, I'm wondering the same thing -- "Mario", "World", and "Time" could go into katakana (the phonetic script for foreign words) easily. I can only imagine that there was only enough space to include hiragana (for native words) and not katakana.

BTW, in general, Japanese uses western numerals in horizontal text such as that in video games, and the native/Chinese numbers in vertical text.

Having two kinds of numerals is very convenient. For example, you could use kanji numerals for inning numbers and positions in the batting order, and European numerals for runs scored, like this:

Actually Famicom Wars (J) for NES is the opposite - it has only katakana and apart from that something like "PUSH START" in rômaji everything in katakana only. Aside from that it doesn't seem have (complete) sentences at all, but I didn't finish the game yet ... would be funny to see the particles in katakana anyway
Actually, like Heian wrote, in older and newer days there is a lot of rômaji usage ... but "HP" is simply shorter, since it is the question how to abbreviate "Hitpoints" (-> "hittopointo", seven characters) otherwise. Everything has fixed width (be it japanese for "one" or one kanji for "age" for instance), what also explains why complicated characters in newspapers seem to be squished. Latin numbers in those games might also look more appealing than the traditional kanji for numerals (maybe these stick put more from japanese text?), or it simply seems better.

Aside from that, there is not very much text in SMB anyway, but the title screen looks funny, all in katakana. I think in Japan western characters were "cool" in the back days (think about game names like Ehrgeiz, Einhänder and the like), also quite neccessary with the usage of early computers, especially today.
I should reduce the amount of parantheses in my posts ...

It was purposely left intact. If I can recall, I think that decision was based off of the Japanese version of Super Mario World- Japanese text but the top was still in English.

Yes, go through the Goodnes 3.10 set and find out how many good title screen hacks are out there. IE.. A few but not very many. Laxidman's title screen hack is an excellent one.

You know. Rockman 1 never use Japanese Text. And so is Super Mario Bros. 2 Japanese, and All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. except parts of the Title Screen. I might consider do a translation project in the future when I feel like it.
