...what...

This hardly seems like a hacking question. What are you trying to get at? Be a bit more verbose; if you fail to provide a better description of your problem or it turns out to be not related to hacking ("I can't get hack xyz to run" doesn't count), I'll trash this thread.

thanks for being so aggresive...

anyway i think its pretty related to hacking...

hacked roms on the real hardware its not something you see everyday.

or maybe you dont know what the powerpak is...

No matter what, blackhole's point remains: this is about you having troubles getting a ROM to work. Not you working on one.

Well, I'll try to link DahrkDaiz (the maker of the hack you are presumably speaking of) to this thread, giving I manage to get a hold of him...

I don't know if this is the reason or not, but I'm just going to guess and say that it has something to do with the fact that the game exploits some features in the emulator that aren't present on an actual NES. I don't really know the details about it, I just remember him mentioning that at some point.

Yeah, I'm quite sure I saw someone pointing out that this hack won't run on a real NES due to the tricks it uses being rather... not so working on a real NES.

I'm not sure what makes it not NES friendly though. From the sounds of it, it's something related to the PPU.

Somebody on #rom-hacking also hypothetized DD could have fiddled with the ROM size, number of banks, whatever (this is not an experienced NES hacker speaking <<) but not correctly filled in the updated information in the header, thus making the copier/mapper of that device screw it up.

Well that's a shame.

So much for these emulators being accurate.

Depends wholly on the emulator actually.

Some emulators have accuracy as a goal (Nestopia) while others don't care about it at all (hello Nesticle).

If it's indeed the header thing, you can't really blame it on the emulator since the headers are intended for the copier devices much more than them...

I seem to recall DD saying that he inadvertently used some illegal opcodes or something (I forget the exact terminology, as I'm not a NES expert myself) that worked in the emulators he used, but not on an actual NES.

Might been undocumented 6502 opcodes, that doesn't exist on the NES version of the 6502 processor... but was implemented anyway in the emulator.

Hmm, I should really try running Mario adventure in the more accurate emulators...

Doesn't seem to work in Nestopia.. But.. When I put in the regular SMB3 rom, when the star sequence thing starts to spawn mario, it loops over and over and over agian, always making the circle one after another, and then it keeps sweeping the tiles from repeating the code that's supposed to remove the box that shows your lives and all.

I don't get it.

i thought it was because sprites were being used from PPU $0000 and $1000. having the background and sprites use the same pattern table screws up the IRQ counter.

Uh, why would you want to play the game on a real NES? It'd just be arghghghg, moreso than emulating it.

(By the way, I seem to have lost my copy of MA. Can someone link me to it, please?)
