Hi there, recently I've been working on this super metroid hack, n00bsmasher. I've made it as hard as possible without ruining it (well, most of the people who have played have said its enjoyable as well as soul crushingly difficult).
It's rather short, but should take a long time to finish compared to its size, a few of the techniques it requires are mid-air-morph, wall jump, one sided wall jump, mockball, quick thinking and knowing the original game well, well times jumps and amazing skill.
One thing i really like about this hack, but also what may make it too hard, is my deathtroids (ASM enhanced metroids; you will know when you see them), which await in tourian.
For anyone who wants to play, here is a link to where you can get the IPS patch (for a headered ROM), but you may find that you are too big for your boots!

Why the hell are you going to play it if you can't even ask a simple question or type a single sentence without sounding like a total idiot?

If you're incapable of making such decisions, then you OBVIOUSLY won't be able to play this hack worth shit.

If I might kindly point you to a grammar tutorial? Do pay special attention to what the exclamation point says.

Anyways, I can't even mockball, so I don't think I could play this hack properly without slowdown.

Ok the IPS patch is fixed, hopefully people can play it now

oh and yeah the deathtroids, i'm not sure how to make a video, but basically:
they have purple shells instead of green, the are much faster and smarter than metroids, which would just float past you when you jumped.

What NightKev means is that NO hack should have ANYBODY use slowdown.

If you expect people to use slowdown, IT'S TOO HARD.

ok i see the point, but stupidly hard is the theme of this hack.
a later version may have a better curve of difficulty though.

I don't see any pictures.

Why play if there aren't any pre-defined graphics?

stupidly hard = not interesting to most people. what happened to fun and enjoyable? if I can't play it on my SNES without savestates and have any reasonable chance of beating it I'm not really interested, and most people here will tell you the same. Look at Parallel Worlds, look at all the other Super Metroid hacks that require ridiculous savestate abuse. Don't you think they'd be more popular if they were more accessible?

Actually, this hack is quite popular over at m2k2, then again, thats where a lot of insane SM players lurk as well.

I think that concept can actually work fairly well unless you are one of those people who can and will try to play it on an actual SNES. Thing is, for many of us, things like savestates long turned into a kind of reflex that is hard to turn off and effectively kills the complexity of any game. While making all hacks like that would be rather dull, I think it makes an interesting enough change to play something that is a challenge with extensive use of TASish tricks and impossible without instead of being mind-bogglingly easy with them and moderately challenging otherwise.
A good example for how this concept can be enjoyable would be one of the worlds in that VIP Mario hack (the third one, that is).

On a more related to the topic note, I should try this as soon as I have time.

I think a lot of people forget that Super Metroid is not a very hard game in and of itself. Even a small to moderate increase in challenge would probably be invigorating to most veterans (read: not interested in savestate abuse, TAS tricks).

I just think a lot of people making rom hacks go way overboard when it comes to making challenging hacks. (evidenced by the prolific SMW hacking scene).

I am a decent enough SM player, but I've tried hacks that have slight changes and modifications to bosses, maps and damage that makes it almost twice as hard.

I gave this a shot, no slowdown or savestates, got about 10 minutes in and already I was like what the fuck.

MoN says it perfectly. SM is an easy game, and with a slight-to-moderate increase in difficulty it becomes a lot of fun, but when you go overboard and make it nigh impossible, it starts to lose its fun factor.
