It's a title-in-progress but, it'll work for now. Anyway, I'm working on something new. The story goes that this Shyguy has defected from Bowser's forces with dreams of conquer of his own. To realize these dreams though, he must first steal the Dark Tome from a deserted underground shrine. With the Tome in hand he must set out to find the Onyx Wand, a wand capable of fulfilling his dreams of power.

Here are some screens from the game. Only one level done so far.

I added SMB3 bricks and I've been changing the palettes and graphics of lots of blocks and items. The bricks are also animated but the shot doesn't show that.

Zero Mission graphics work great here as shrine graphics.

Inside the shrine. Expect to find a few hidden passages in the walls. No enemies though, since it's supposed to be deserted. It's a find the Dark Tome and leave sort of level. For the record, I really like that running sprite I gave the Shyguy.

I'm still working on the graphics for the Shyguy. Normal Shyguy is the most complete right now with about half of the graphics done for him. Powered-up Shyguy is purple and has a red headband. His graphics are just started. Wand-wielding Shyguy is black with the red headband and his graphics are the same as powered-up Shyguy so their at the same level. I don't think I'm going to include a cape/flying anything in the game.

I guess I'll do a demo after I complete the first world. I dunno where that's going to be since I'm using ExGFX finally and I can't just throw down piece from the Standard objects list. Gotta build piece by piece...

The purple blocks look ugly.

Other than that, it seems to be an excellent idea.

Yes I got them from your game. But I believe the readme said that it was okay as long as credit was given. If I'm wrong I'm sorry and I'll get them from somewhere else.

The foreground graphics, with a few exceptions, are top notch... you should either replace or at least recolour the backgrounds to something with less contrast and less clashing with the FG though.

Yeah. The SMW backgrounds do clash, and the purple ? blocks are just yucky.

What has been said about the FG and BG I agree with, so I won't repeat it here.

As a suggestion, I would perhaps pick a cave tileset that has a little bit more depth than the SMW background, and make the BG palette a little more concentrated and darker. By that I mean, don't have dark colours and light colours, but instead dark colours, darker colours, and medium colours. I.E, keep the colours similar without making them the same. I think I might have said it somewhere, maybe just did but didn't post, but I would recommend that you add smaller enemies such as 'crawlies' or similar style of enemies, since even in abandoned buildings you can usually find wildlife that has crept in and made a home.

You could use a Metroid Zero Mission background from Ice Man's ExGFX hack and change the palette a bit so it fits with the FG.

Small screenshot update.

I've added SMB3 pipes and now know exactly how they work. Yoshi Coins will be replaced. Also, NSMB cave graphics are in.

Not just a simple palette change with Tweaker, I've made it so that Red vertical Koopas change into Blue Koopas when stomped and Green Bouncing Koopas change into Yellow Koopas when stomped. Just to add a bit of variety to the game.

Does anyone have suggestions for what I can chage the Yoshi Coins into? Someone already suggested SMB2 cherries, which could work but I'd like some other ideas as well.

Hmm.. Quite interesting. I assume you will stay small at all times, right? A nice addition could be a life bar like in brutal Mario, but that's probably very difficult.

Hm, perhaps magical artifacts of some kind, to go along with the black magic theme?

Also, I like the way you've used those graphics, it looks quite good. However, I'd pay a little me attention to the pipes. The way the corners go, unfortunately, doesn't work. Black does not belong on the top or left. I woudl suggest some custom pipe GFX for the corners, if you can. Of course, you could always use generic 'turn in teh pipe' graphics

The pipes clash with the Foreground. I recommend you to change them to something else.

I'm not quite sure what you mean with the pipe corners. Could you explain it a bit more?

Try to make yours. Try to make them look like in SMB3. They were kinda of a box, not a "fusion" of pipes.

Can't be bothered writing different posts for different boards so I'm just copying and pasting. Ctrl-A+Ctrl-C+Ctrl-V FTW.

Been working slowly for the past week or so. Mostly I've been doing level design but I've also gotten a few more Shyguy frames done, redid the shared palettes and a bit more. Here's some screens of my progress.

I added a few Swooper Bats to the ruins to represent the natural wildlife that would find it's way into there. Also replaced the red outlines with normal black ones.

I finished the NSMB cave level. For those of you who are going to mention custom pipe corners, they aren't a priority right now. It's playable and that's fine for now. Springboard's palette is now red, may changed to blue.

Oh noes! SMAS graphics! I don't care what you guys think, I'm using them. So they're overused. Maybe that's because they are good graphics? Anyway, it's an icy cave, complete with frozen blocks and slippery floors. You can also see the Shyguy's "big Shyguy" graphics in this one.

I've added Mario/No Mario blocks. The blue are Mario only, the green are Sprite only. Graphics for them are probably temporary.

This is the first world. Echo Cavern. The purple border is due to be changed, to what though I'm not sure. Maybe a set of blues. That thing on the right is the ruins level. Go custom graphics. Mario OW sprite still needs to be changed. Events still need to added.

I've also played around a bit with the game's code. Specifically the ?-Blocks. Let me just show you.

Fish-in-the-block! How annoying would it be to work hard to get to a ?-block and pop it open and find a flopping fish inside? Quite annoying I'd think. Plus, when used in underwater levels, it's a method of adding enemies to an other wise empty area.

I'm having fun with this one so far. Hopefully a demo will be out soon to showcase world one. Leave comments please.
