I won 2nd place in the Physics category at my school with my friend and made it to Regionals. (Groan, that's almost like losing!)
Our project is "The Effect of a trebuchet's Fulcrum Point on the Projection of its Payload." We built our own five-foot tall trebuchet and tested different fulcrum lengths by hurling a tennis ball. As a counterweight we used 15 pounds of bricks attached to the end of the arm. I wonder how we'll do at Regionals. I'm not too hopeful, seeing as we're going with a 2nd place prize... Has anyone here ever gone to a big science fair? Is it really as boring as I was told (i.e. go on a Friday, set up, come Saturday and sit by your project for 6 hours, come Sunday for judging and awards.)? ____________________ |

I built one of those once. It was a pain to get it to work. Good luck! |

I always BSed my way through science fair... I absolutely hated doing it =/
My projects are therefore not worth mentioning. ____________________ |

Honestly, uh... I wouldn't know. I always bombed science fairs.
Then again, I wouldn't know, seeing as yours has a deceptively complex name for what I think is effectively a catapult ____________________ I dealt with it. |

Oh man. My only science fair was so bad. It was on conductive materials.
Fuck that. |

Posted by FirePhoenix0Posted by Ice PenguinWe launched our tennis ball 56 feet at max. The tennis ball weighs less than 1.4 times less than the basketball so I think he wins. Although I'd be lucky to launch it 5. |

Posted by KlesPosted by FirePhoenix0Posted by Ice PenguinWe launched our tennis ball 56 feet at max. Maybe, but it depends on how big his trebuchet was too. If they were both 5" tall, then I guess he does win. This same friend of mine used to have a 10" tall one that he launchhed pumpkins from into his yard. He has three acres of land to do this in. He also does crazy stuff. ____________________ |

Posted by FirePhoenix0 I don't remember exactly, but I would guess about 6..... Isn't this: '' inches? And this: ' feet? Whichever is feet. |

Posted by Nyletak *smacks forehead Oh well, a five inch trebuchet that throws a tennis ball 56 feet would be awesome. ____________________ |

If a 5 inch trebuchet could throw a tennis ball 56 feet, how far could a 5 foot tebuchet throw it? |

Posted by Ice Penguin Did the math, and it would be hurled 672 feet. Holy Hell, that would be a deadly ballistic. ____________________ |

Haha, I didn't think you or anyone would answer that.
And yes, THAT would be very cool to watch a tennis ball go 672 feet!! |

I only had to do one science fair project per se, which I did on copper plating (or attempting to). In my advanced science class in high school though, we had to do a resecrah project every semester or do one every year and then present it at a county-wide expo. (I lived in a rural Michigan county with a population of about 30000 at the time, so when I did present I got all of 6 people in the audience, but I still got credit.) My projects were:
- Coating nails with various substances and leaving them out in the weather to see which was best at preventing rust. I found out that Rust-Oleum type paints are a lot better at it than normal paint, but ordinary grease was the best. Crisco wasn't very good though. - Putting several types of tape (including cheap imitation duct tape and real duct tape) around a barrel eposed to the weather outside to see which would hold the longest and also which would remain sticky the longest. The masking tape fell off first as you might expect (I didn't use Scotch tape), but I was surprised that the black electrician's tape held on for much longer than the duct tape (I think it's still on there, from a project that I started in 2002!). My dad still uses these findings and prefers electrician's tape when working outside. - I did a survey for my third project, to determing whether watching lots of TV really affects people's grades. I asked 100 or so people, selected at random from three high schools, what their GPA was and how many hours a week they watched of TV. Of course I got a lot of joke answers like (1000000 hours of TV) which I ignored (although one may have gotten through). I found out that watching more TV only has a very small negative impact on grades, and the impact it has is unrelated to what year of high school they were in, assuming that the much higher correlation I got for the seniors was due to an extreme outlier that I didn't recognize as such. |

Posted by Ice Penguin It'd be great to have a player at the other side to attempt to "return" it as far as he/she could. |
