The holy quadrangle of Sion, Akiha, Len and Kohaku is superior.

That's why I always beat you with her, right?

Well, in case you all don't know what we're talking about, Melty Blood, and its derivations ReACT and Act Cadenza, is a doujin fighting game that Alastor thinks is inferior to Guilty Gear.

He's wrong. It's fast-paced, hard-hitting, frustratingly intense action for one or two players, and more recently in Act Cadenza Version B, four players playing tag team.

The games are based off of TYPE-MOON's Tsukihime and Kagetsu Tohya visual novels, and while the source material is eroge, there's not a drop of hentai in Melty Blood at all. Instead, while it still has a great story (that you can get a translation of from Revolve Translations), the sex is substituted with a very well-done fighting engine that revolves around short bursts of combos, aerial combat, and blisteringly perfect timing.

The basic premise of the game is pretty simple. You have three attack buttons, which do weak, medium, and strong attacks. In conjunction with these, you also have the standard fighting game moves (QCF, QCB, HCF, etc) that can be used with these buttons to perform three different levels of a certain special attack -- a weak version, a medium version, and a strong or "EX" version that uses 1/3 of your magic circuit bar. The Magic Circuit bar is a super move gauge that fills over time as you attack other characters and get hit. Take too much of a beating, and the gauge breaks, disallowing you from performing EX moves and gaining circuit temporarily.

In addition to those, you have a fourth button, which allows you to shield. This shield appears for only a fraction of a second, so it's akin to a parry that gives you an opportunity to quickly retaliate when you manage to catch an attack. It's got a very high risk/reward ratio, though, so the trick to it is to use it when you NEED it. Used properly, it can turn the tide in a match.

Eh, the game's in Japanese, though, and you have to get yourself a legal copy if you wanna play a translation of it. Or be a little shrewd in your acquisitions...

Anyway, it's one of those games that I don't shut up about, so yeah, if you've played it, discuss, if you haven't, what the hell are you doing just sitting there for?

You know, if one game is like another game, but there is less depth to it, but they are overall very similar, that does kinda make it inferior.

Hm, I think that a game can have less depth and still be a better game, by some criteria.

I mean, Grey & co. are obviously looking for a fun game more than a competitive tournament-play game, and if they personally prefer the game with less depth, then it's the better game for them.

There's different kinds of good game, mm?

I did not know Melty Blood wasn't a competitive tournament-play game.

Bringing this shit back like it's 2007. If someone gets the netplay shit for it and the game, I'd love to take on challengers.

Cause I seriously miss playing this and I haven't played Actress Again at all. Has anyone else tried it yet? :O

Oh come on, it was cool.
