I'm just wondering before I make a hack is if it's alright if I clear out every map and re-design them (moving buildings about, renaming, etc) but keep stuff like the scripts in, but just at different parts of the map. Meaning that the storyline is the same, like you walk out of "pallet town" and Prof. Oak comes and takes you to his lab for a pokemon.

Also if I do stuff like change pokemon data slightly, so that there is different evolve times (to make it a little more challenging) and different move sets to them?

Just a question.

That's a good place to start, but you should really write a new storyline when you finish the map designs.

edit: haha I thought this was in general chat, nvm

New maps = good
Same scripts = not so good
Changing evolve times = depends

Scripts = Because I have no idea how they work yet.
Evolve Times = For example - Bulbasaur - Ivysaur (Lv 26) - Venasaur (Lv 44)

If anyone is willing to help me with scripts, I'd go for it.

Scripts - If you want a really good hack, you need to learn scripts. Otherwise, though your hack will have actual NEW routes/towns/etc, it will be the same boring story.
Evolve Times - Eh whatever you feel like then, it doesn't really matter, I never evolve them until they learn most/all of their moves anyway.

One more question.

How do I clear out the maps, if possible? As in, just creating them instead of editing current ones.

First I'd like to thank you for asking for help before showing us your hack. Basically when I clear out a map, I move all the sprites/warps/events to the top left corner of the map, and then replace every tile on the map with a grass tiles.

Heres a few more helpful tips. The thing is, you can do whatever you want in a hack. It's your world! You don't have to limit yourself to what the game already prodives, you can come up with your own ideas and figure out ways to fully execute them.

If you want to do something in a hack, just do it. You know why? It's YOUR hack, and you can do anything you want with it.

Keep in mind try to not show off things that were in the original version. Nobody wants to play a boring hack with only minor differences from the original version. We want something new, so try to come up with new ideas you think people would enjoy.

So make your own region, try to apply a new story with that, with new features and lots of things you wouldn't find in the original game. If you want to take a look at something I consider really different from the original game, check out Pokemon Prism (Which is on the hack related releases forum).

Good luck!

Keep in mind if you don't change the scripts, you'll have to work around them, which limits what you can design. You really should start by thinking of a storyline, sketching out some rough designs of what the world map might look like, then go about designing your maps and writing/editing scripts to suit them.

As for clearing the maps, if the editor doesn't have a built-in method, just draw over all the tiles and move all the events into a corner or delete them.

Thank you. Basically that's what I am doing aside from certain scripts, which I'm just keeping in as a placeholder in the mean time.

Mine will not be like the original aside from the basic storyline (get all badges, beat the top group, etc), I'm contemplating on a Pokemon cult sort of storyline, which you have to stop them from bringing havoc to (insert region name here), that sort of thing.

It'll most likely change though.

The only problem I have is scripts. I mean, I can easily do a notice board script and warping script, but when it comes to people and stuff such as restricting until certain goal is reached thing is a problem. I don't understand this "0xFF" stuff D:

First of all, taking Grey Mario's advice, I'm going to plan out the maps first and work on the scripts later (if I work on them now, set date of completion to 2011). When I have done a fair amount of them, I'll start looking up commands and that. I'll probably have a million questions for scripting

That's why I'm asking for help.

Learning hex would be a good first step toward script editing. I take it you're hacking R/B/Y?

So we lost all of the conversation from yesterday/today, woo!
In other news: Advance Map + Some script editor + Hex editor (maybe) = tools for hacking.

Advanced Map for map editing.
EliteMap for pokemon data and scripts.
No hexeditor program at the moment, since I still don't understand hex.

I would priobably run several tests and make a back up copy because I have another project I'm working on so I make it a point to back up my work more than once and keep your least glitched up version. But be cxareful as you can get a "Bad Rom Header" As I did at least once training on a Super Mario 3 Type Hack. So watch yourself there.

Do you have any idea what you're talking about? SMB3 hacking has almost nothing to do with Pokémon hacking. The bugs in an SMB3 editor are of no concern to a Pokémon hacker.

It's the principal. When working on any project Pokemon or otherwise always save an extra copy of what you're doing. I have two copies backed up of my project for that reason to avoid loosing my work.

You might want to look up what a header actually does.

In most cases, when a editor/emulator barf about header errors, you can usually fix them easily yourself.

I don't need too. It saves 3 backups automatically, 1 for changes, 1 for more changes and one of the one without changes (original file).

Though if, after editing, your ROM header is suddenly corrupt, odds are other parts of the ROM are corrupt too. Unless it's just complaining about a checksum error.
