Well this is probably an exausted topic, but I am wanting to learn something new, and I know that there are level editors for this, but thats not what I want to do, I want to change the levels using only hex, myself for learning how to do it, thing is I have no ideal where the level data is in the smb1 rom, if some one knows where any part of it is or how to find it I could work with that, and feel my way around like a blind man, until I figure out what I can change, I am very fimilar with hex editing, and such I just need some where to start, later. |

How about getting one of those editors, modifying a tile in a level, and then comparing the original ROM with your modified one ? That way you'd know where the level data is... or some of it, at least. |

Posted by Treeki Palletes are universal between games on the NES, so there's nothing that really needs explaining, other than someone giving you the address :/ |

Well, the NES emulator FCEUXD displays the four palletes used for backdrops and sprites, so all you really need to do is hover over a chunk and see what the bytes are for the four colors and search for 'em in your hex editor of choice. There's really nothing to it ^^ |

Then find an image of the NES color table, and compare and contrast the colors. Almost all beginner hacking docs seem to have this in it, some find one.
I personally don't know of any real programs that'll help you if you're not on Windows. If that's your problem. You're going to have to match the colors on screen with those of the NES, and not all emulators use the same pallete, so you may have some trouble coming your way. |

Posted by Stifu Heck I never thought of that, I will give it a try tho. the rom map helps and there are some for a lot of other nes games that will probably keep me busy for a while. thanks for the help so far, tho I am a little slow in getting around, later. |

Another cool thing is if you could get the player you controle to be Peach and then have her rescue Mario. That would be funny. |

Posted by Kyoufu KawaThat's actually a pretty useless post you got there, Kawa! It is very nice to see more people hack SMB...the old games are sometimes the best and it is so fun to see what people can do with such limited base engines! |
