Over time I became quite good with the keyboard. Although even then this hack is still pretty tough. I never noticed that maps for each of the areas were provided so until a few days ago I was going in circles a lot.

I've gotten used to the keyboard over these years of turning into a comp geeker.

I'd still freakin love to get one of those USB NES controller ports!!

I've found technical fire and one key in each area. How many keys are we supposed to find?

And could someone help me figure out where to find the other powers?

You need 5 keys to open up Area-5, and there are 8 keys in the game, total.

Regarding items:

Spoiler:
There are 5 items in the game. 2 are in Area-1, 2 in Area-3, and 1 in Area-4. Technical fire is a handy item, but completely unnecessary. The other items have to be gotten in order. Check out Area 3 first.

In order to play the "real" area 5 you need all 8 keys. Trust me it's wort it to pick em up.
But if you only whant to play the fake sure.

Also there is a folder "data" for people who did download the zip and not the patch.
It have all maps (except area 0 and 5 ) With out the secret paths and stuff on them...

I think I'm suppose to find another power, but I don't have a clue where to find it.

Spoiler:
I picked up Super Fire or whatever it was called from level 3 and have 4 keys. In level 3, there's a spike floor that only small mario can fit through. With super mario and a run up I can do an invincibility run to get to the pipe at the end, but very soon after there's a jump that's seemingly impossible...

Very nice hack by the way. I left it alone to do other stuff but now it's really got my interest.

Yeah, you need another item.

Spoiler:
The item you need is in Area 1. Aside from Technical Fire and Super Fire, items require you to use other items to get them. Think about how you might be able to use Super Fire in Area 1 to explore new places.

I recommend beating the game both with 8 keys and with fewer than 8 keys. Area 5 differs depending on whether you have all the keys or not, so it's another area to play through. I also recommend continuing after being the game with all 8 keys, since you get a neat little surprise. That surprise opens the door to a couple cool things, too.

Thanks for the tip. I found an area only accessible now, but I didn't find what I was after.

Spoiler:
I came to 1 solid brick wall which I could work through, which I worked through to find another wall with 3 bouncy goombas in it. Then I found myself in the same place a pipe would get me to. On another occassion, I broke through a wall leading to a room wtih a red koopa on a pipe with a '!' block that you're forced into as you cross the pit.

I felt sure I'd get the mystery item on one of those.

Spoiler:
There's a key in Area 1 that you get from going down the pipe in the waterfall area. Before that key, there's a gap to fall through with a line of those flashing blocks enabled by the ! block, but typically you can't have them enabled when you get here because the normal path has you disable ! blocks before progressing. Think about using Super Fire to get there with those blocks turned on.

I got 7 keys, and haven't found area 5 yet... O_o

But I'm sure I missed stuff in area 3... At some point, I'm at the top of a place, and I see stuff below the floor (pipes, enemies, coins), even though there's no floor at all below all that. I guess there may be some invisible floor somewhere to get there...

Also, in area 4, when you get out from the water and get to that part with the SMB music, then end up going underground again, you have to hit a ! switch to go forward, but then you have to miss stuff that's blocked by previously hit ! switch... Couldn't figure that out yet.

This hack is a lot of fun! Easy to get lost too. One thing I don't like is how you lose the Super Fire skill when you die, and you have to go back and get it again.

Huh? All keys and items should stay with you when you continue. I don't recall ever running into any problems with that...

Wow, that video runs abysmally slowly...

I've yet to beat that area without saved states going in without items, but I have beaten it starting out with all the items (I actually got all the keys and items before finding it, heh. Those sections with the bouncy enemies in the chains aren't that easy when you can't bounce on them). The last two sections before the 'boss' are ridiculously hard without saved states. Timing those jumps perfectly is tough.

Edit: I was amused to see you wedge yourself through the ceiling. The moment I saw that, I was like 'Oh boy...he's gonna have to wait for time to run out.' Never expected to see that happen.

Yea but I have done it before. The area with ball and chain is actually not to hard. Now afterward I know a great way to beat it.

Yea I was recording the last part of that area. Then I got stuck in the roof, Meh lets keep going. Good thing I use save stats when I record. ^^

The SP area was cool, but nowhere near as cool as the original final boss fight.

Does getting the master key change anything of import? How about getting all the 1ups?

I've only gotten 60% of the 1ups, so I don't know about that. The SP key is like having all 8 normal keys, though. I believe that's all it does.

Someone should compile a walkthrough... because I'm lazy... Other than this game being WAy more than a time killer (which is all I expected it to be) this game is pretty much incredible. I'm about to change the mario sprite to look like Samus, just for my own personal pleasure.

Well, maps are included in this game so I dunno how much need of a walkthrough there is. >> I just enjoy the exploration aspect.
