I don't know if anyone of you ever heard of this hack, but it's great (and hard).

Think Super Mario Bros. meets Metroid, incl. new moves and music.

Here's a YouTube Video demonstrating it's game play.

And the patch is found at the SMB archives, in the Lab Files section (see sidebar) choose download # 162.

Patch it to a SMB ROM, also included is a complete manual with map, obviously complete in Japanese

SMB archives via ZeldaDD's Xanga Site

Yeah I have that hack.

I love it.
I can't get it to work on PocketNES though...

A lot of hacks seem to have something in the gravity system that freezes the game. In DD's SMB Seasons hack, you jump you freeze,
in balloonfight mario, you jump you freeze,
in this, you jump you freeze.

Or if any sprite's verticle speed is set to move you'll freeze.

Na, I think more that this is a japanese SMB hack archive.

It's worth noting that the hacker also made it so that you can gain height by holding jump when you jump on an enemy. It's easy to forget that that's not in the original SMB, until you play.

This looks awesome, but I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet.

Exactly what emulator am I supposed to try this on? Nestopia and FCEUltra both do not have music when playing. Perhaps I was supposed to patch it to a PRG1 ROM?

EDIT: I patched it to a PRG1 ROM too. Something is wrong, is it supposed to be patched to a FDS version or something?

I don't know what your problem is, I patched to a PRG0, and running it in Nestopia has no problems at all, though I'm using version 1.36, since that's what I shortcutted after learning of the online problems. And the hack is amazing, but frustrating. It's interesting how ATA worked around the fact you can't go backwards.

Holy shit.

Super Metroid music? In SMB? And from the youtube video alone proves just how awesome this is.

Downloading now.

I've patched it to a verified good dump of PRG0 and still issues. When starting the game, it plays every sound effect in the game at once and then the first level has no music until I go down the pipe at the end of the level. Also, apparently you are supposed to be able to go backwards now? I cannot.

That would be radical if you could go backwards.

Well anyways I have the same problem as you.

I can't download the patch though because it says there's a server error, but I got this from a goodNES batch.

It makes sounds when you start the game, usually you have to reset to fix it.

Really not that great a hack. It might be different, but it's not fun, it's just more difficult.

Fucking hard with a keyboard. I can't find Tactical Fire, and I can't get past Brinstar lookalike World.
It's a great hack though. Really impressive work.

As I said when I mentioned this hack in the General Screenshots Thread, I think it's probably the best hack ever, and is definitely my favorite NES game. It's great.

I don't know what causes the music error; unfortunately, my ROM and ROMs other people I know who've played this hack have used have the music error, whereas the ROM shown in the YouTube video does not have it. It isn't particularly important, though, since it only happens on startup (starting a new game after a game over is fine) and fixes itself when you go through that first pipe. Oh well.

ArBeWhy: Wait, so when something is difficult, it's not fun? A lot of older games are very challenging and also fun. This hack is tough, sure, and on my first play through I admit I used some saved states. I'm not that great at Super Mario Bros 1 in general. But really, all it comes down to is practice; now I can beat the game without saved states or continues in less than an hour while getting all 8 keys. It just takes some practice. I, for one, think the game's level of difficulty is great, and I feel a sense of accomplishment from having mastered it. That's a sign of a good game.

And what's this about it being hard to play with a keyboard? I can understand for systems that have a lot of buttons, but with the NES, I actually play better with a keyboard than a gamepad. I map the D-Pad to WASD and A/B/St/Se to buttons on the right side of the keyboard (' ] \ / on a laptop, respectively. I use buttons on the numpad on a standard keyboard). I'll never understand why it's so hard to play like this.

To be honest, I rather play games with the keyboard than my Gravis Eliminator. Of course this hack is tight though, I love how the Japanese hack SMB.

Over time I became quite good with the keyboard. Although even then this hack is still pretty tough. I never noticed that maps for each of the areas were provided so until a few days ago I was going in circles a lot.
