You guys seriously need to have some respect. He's got to start somewhere. Give him a chance. It's pretty good for his first hack. He's got the concept of replacing graphics with other graphics, and the concept of how a SMB level is built. I'm not saying he's a great level designer, just that he knows how to hack them. Most of the graphics look pretty good, save for the "Eat my shit" blocks, and the question blocks. He's even got an ASM hack in there. If it wasn't his code, who the fuck cares, he knows how to patch.

I'm disappointed in the noob flaming in here, it reminds me of everything that made ||board shitty. If you don't like it, say why the fuck you don't like it. Constructive criticism. Not blatant disrespect.

Here, let me write a post like you:

It's just a precedent, asshole. When people see a hack that has utilizes cursewords like this, the obvious implication, you fucking moron, is that it's going to be a lot like i-mockery's hacks.

I don't know about you, douchebag, but if you were trying to be serious about making a good hack, you would've probably stayed away from this thing. Look at most popular hacks; none of them used it, and there is a reason, faggot. Do you think that SMB1 itself would've been as popular back then if it had "eat my shit" blocks? I don't think so either, fuckwad.

In short, go fuck yourself. I was interested in this hack, actually, until someone pointed out the "eat my shit" blocks. At that point, I lost interest and figured that if it was relying on graphics like that it was probably just another Penis Mario 4.

Get the fuck out and take your attitude with you.

I hacked it all through-out a live hex editor.
I did use an ASM document to reference where the music 'hotspots' are, and then I caught on to how it worked.

The release is ment to show what different features are in the game.
I'm alright at hacking, but I'm not a pro at ASM and all.
The release isn't supposed to really show 'how different the levels are'.
The first level was modded like that as an into level.

Graphic-wise, I editted some of the TSA data, palette, tiles of coarse, and I even rearranged some of the tiles that sprites use.

I don't know. If it was a plain mario hack, then you people probably would think it's ok.

That's hardly constructive criticism. While it might be true, the least you could do is be nicer about it. We promote ROM hacking. If something is shit, tell them why (without being an ass) and tell them what should be done. Examples help. I've seen people create some pretty bad stuff, and they have received quite a huge dose of constructive criticism. They went on to create some pretty cool shit as a result of this. Instead, one of you is an ass, and the rest of you jump on the bandwagon.

First off, the face looks great. Borat doesn't actually wear a red suit, so I was going to suggest changing it to light blue (or maybe gray, but certainly not black). But if that conflicts with the blue sky, go ahead and keep it.

I haven't even played it yet, but the Princess had better be Pamela Anderson and Toad has to be Azamat Bagatov.

Yes, the needless swearwords should be dumped. (And I think you got it wrong to begin with -- doesn't Borat, still struggling with English grammar, yell out of the car that he's going to eat the other driver's shit?)

Why not be creative and change the bricks to something out of Cold War-era Soviet architecture or something? Might be tough to get that much flavor into a 16x16 block, but maybe at least get some gray panels in there instead of a needless obscenity.

If you can hack the music, make it Central Asian / Balkan in flavor like the fantastic movie soundtrack.

And -- this goes without saying -- the lettering should be in Cyrillic! It doesn't even have to make sense; the TV show didn't bother about correctness or even pronounce-ability. (The movie, OTOH, used correct Russian for quite a lot of it; I liked this intellectual bit sandwiched between the vulgarities.)

Keep at it; this could be a lot of fun!

See you are wrong here. Noone but Nightkev and Tyty flammed him. What I said in IRC was private for a reason, not to be posted here. Nightkev did it anyways and Tyty followed suit. Hyperhacker did not flame he nicely put it out there, as did I that it looked like it belonged in I-Mockery which would clue him into the word blocks being awful. Tuna didn't flame either at first, he even used the word "Sorry." which he NEVER uses. Ever. Even if he is sorry. So you can blame Noob1 and Noob2.

I'll give criticism from what I can tell through the pics (at least until I can find a SMB rom to play it and give assessment on the level design).

For one, the graphics are pretty... decent. It does look like Borat on NES, and the blocks work, I guess, considering its Borat. The "Eat My Shit" blocks don't fit though, especially in the underground where it is the ceiling. Make them different. Something more fitting to Borat (I've never seen it, so I can't say what exactly). Also, I'd recommend changing the enemy sprites as well. They don't fit with Borat being there. Again, don't know what they could be, but it could be different for some reason. Its Borat. It doesn't have to make sense.

The level design from what I see looks a bit... dull, however. Not a lot in each screen to keep me occupied. The third screenshot looks highly similar (if not, exactly) like the original 1-2. Change it up a bit. Make it different.

It does look like a funny hack, though, if for just playing Borat.

(Only reason I actually posted here with criticism is to show it isn't hard to do, and its a lot better for hackers to learn this way than with dumbass comments from idiots like Tyty and Nightkev.)

Yeah, the letters and words don't go well with graphics. Not on every single block. Things like that are unattractive and annoying. Now, if you were to add something like that in actual text that occurred only once in the game, then it might be ok, depending on the circumstances. But usually things like that tend to flag a hack as "shit" and nobody wants to play it. Unfortunately, as you had this in your hack, it was labeled as "shit" when it actually had some pretty cool things in it.

Also, good level designers don't spell words out with blocks, they keep to the environment of the game, and build according to the type of the world. Structural integrity, and lots of it.

The font looks really good too. It's got the rounded edges, and it works well with both bright and dark areas.

Also, good work on the ASM. One thing: does this work on the Bowser? If it does, then it's an easy kill, and that's usually not a good thing.

It's alot better than it was before, but you can add 1 or 2 more colors to the hand, and try to change 1-2 a bit more, 1-1 also looked a bit too easy, I really like the death music too =D
