I came across a program today that allows you to insert up to 8 new songs into the overworld. The site is in Japanese, so you might want to check it out via google translate:

http://vip.rgr.jp/sm4wiki/index.php?Overworld%20Editor%2F%B2%BB%B3%DA%A4%CE%C4%C9%B2%C3

Make sure you back up your ROM before experimenting with this. I don't speak Japanese, so maybe someone can be a better help here -- from what I gather all you need to do to use this is:

1. Start with an expanded ROM (edited with LM.) From the command line run:
addmusic romname.smc INIT
Don't run this more than once, or it will corrupt your ROM

2. Run:
addmusic romname.smc
This will convert 11.txt through 18.txt into music and insert it into the ROM

3. With the LM overworld editor change the overworld music to any track 11 - 18 and hear the new tunes.

If you want to create your own music, the format of the txt files is on the site, but I have not looked into it all. Check it out

can someone who knows japanese please translate this, if I put it in the online translators it won't make as much sense.. I'll try the translator anyways though...

EDIT: "With the right chestnut retention"????

EDIT2: okay this is making less sense than I expected: "The original work MIDI it could do death son-in-law thing even with we of the beginner. "...

There also seems to be some more songs in the same txt format here, under the heading BGM: http://vip.rgr.jp/sm4wiki/index.php?%BC%AB%BA%EE%CA%AA%C5%B8%BC%A8%BE%EC

Edit: This page looks to have some more music related stuff as well. Perhaps we can figure some of this stuff out.

I heard about this from blackhole89, but I've never seen this until now. This information is actually about SMW's native music format, not SMAS'.

Here, I've taken an excerpt from bgm.txt, with added/altered notes in square brackets:

F0 ;echo off
DA 03 ;[instrument=$03]
E2 3C ;tempo=$3C
E0 E6 ;volume=$E6
DB 0F ;[pan=0F]
18 3E ;length=$18, [?attack=$3E]
B2 B2 B2 A6 B2 B2 B2 A6 ;[G,G,G,A,G,G,G,A]
06 ;length=$06 [The second byte hasn't been changed, so it remains at 3E]
B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 B3 B0 ;[G#,F,G#,F,G#,F,G#,F,G#,F,G#,F,G#,F,G#,F]
18 ;length=$18
B2 AD A6 ;[G,D#,A]
00 ;end

The rest of this document looks very interesting. It appears to describe SMW's music format. If someone could translate the document, it may give sufficient information to do perfect conversions from SMW to SMAS's N-SPC format.

It very well does, I already have some test runs on the import filter working with SST. Also, it contains some information of direct use to N-SPC hacking as well (since the SMW engine is pretty much the predecessor of the "final" N-SPC), like on how the timing/speed and echo commands work.

Heh, this is rather win. Whoever made this program is awesome, that's for sure. (also, track 15 is Forest Maze from SMRPG. That alone is win)

Note: if you don't have a Japanese translator, the first interrobang-filled link is the one with the download

EDIT: Also, I noticed it really like to mess up the GFX01.bin file and various sprite files too

Note of advice use Google Translator to translate Japanesse to English.

I hope this helps...

Keeping on topic, is there anyway anyone could make some adjustments to it so all music tracks can used from this.

This does not seem to work for me. I opened cmd, typed in the path of the files (D:\test\addmusic SMW.smc INIT) but I get this error:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: AddMusic

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
PS: I got the newest java.

Edit: Nevermind, I got working. It somehow was the path that wasnt working. Ah well. It's all good now.

Hmm. If you reinsert the graphics into the ROM after you add the music in, it kills the sound.

Anyone know what's up with that?

Looking a little closer at the page, there is a note in one of the blue boxes (obvious machine translation):

You will pay attention to the excess of capacity. Because there is no prevention measure... As for maximum of the music data which can insert, “total of the data after the converting about 9600 bytes”

Maybe that is why the gfx are being overwritten? The source is included in the archive, so it shouldn't be too hard to see exactly what is going on.

I figured there might be a maximum being overwritten or something .. but before you reinsert the graphics (which actually fixes them), you get this error:

That's what messes up the sprites in the first place

So is there a chance we can insert more music with it? Cause I need more than 11.txt - 18.txt files.

Yea, but I'm not planning to use it for the OW only. I can use it on levels, too. Therefor I need more slots.

There is a tool called tinymm. It will convert MID to MML (the format used for the songs) but appearently the loops, echos, tempo, volume and such need to be done by hand cause the songs won't work otherwise. Don't ask me how to do it, I only know that. I tried to take 11.txt as a base and somewhat got a music from Bahamut Lagoon which sounded totally fucked up, xD.
Maybe we have to wait until someone explains us the format and inserting/creating new music and even more music.

EDIT: Here is the link to to tinymm

Use the code 7E1DFBxx, where xx is 11 through 18, to listen to the music when on the title screen or overworld. This should be easier then modifying the overworld song selection over and over...

has anyone managed to get this to work? I've tried with several different ROMs, and after saving a level in L to a new ROM then adding the music, the overworld now has no music at all , just sound effects
