I stumbled upon this Japanese hack about an hour ago and I must say I am impressed with all these ASM hacks in this game. I've played through the first world just now and here are some of the ASM hacks in a nutshell:

- There is a day and night cycle in the second level.



- In the third level, you have to chase a Yoshi that runs much faster than usual.

- Custom bosses:

Spoiler:
- The first castle has a Shy Guy that tries to push you off the stage similar to the Roger the Potted Ghost fight in YI.

- Lemmy fights much differently in this hack. He throws the same balls from SMB3 and jumps around the room when you hit him. It takes 5 hits to kill him.

That underwater castle (take the alternate exit in the second red-dot level) is freaking EPIC. And the leaf shield (hit R in the 4th level) is rather neat, too.

I'd be more interested in the day/night change if it didn't look so crappy.

I forget. It was in the forest though and the leaves were in the front layer so it was hard to see.

It was actually done using custom blocks. If you backtrack, the cycle goes backwards.

The first of those shots looks excellent, but the last two are TERRIBLE.

That hack's regular name is, iirc, 鬼畜王マリオ (Kichiku-ou Mario, roughly "brute king mario")... I was sent it by 2ch (the person, not the board) after the ongoings in mikeyk's sprite tool thread and had a look at it.

Play this hack now.

It will change your views on SMW hacking forever.

The giant koopas, night modes etc. are nothing compared to what is yet to see for you.

(And honestly, this might be what gets me back into SMW hacking after I am done with the bulk of pending schoolwork...)

...Wha? No matter how well they work or don't, the stuff in it is truly amazing, and tends to be outside of what would be perceived as possible for Mario World.

(Naturally, a lot of it looks just a bit more crappy than it should, but... It's a legitimately fun experience over all. Except for fighting Wily. That just hurts.)

It's somewhat disturbing how much of it is lifted from Donkey Kong Country 2, but it still works pretty well.

Wow, this hack is incredible. A little rough around the edges. But all those new features are just unbelievable. I would have never believed this if I had not played it myself. Utterly jaw-dropping effects. Super Mario World has come a very very long way.

Blackhole: That first screenshot... How the hell do you beat that boss once the third head appears? I got past the first two heads no problem, but the third one kept making a countdown appear over Mario's head, causing damage when it hit zero. Do the bob-ombs have something to do with it?
