This is a hack of the original Castlevania for NES that optomon and I have been working on for over a year. Optomon has done all the coding, music, and some level design, and I've done all the graphics, some level design, and the map. So what's changed?

-New GFX
-New levels
-New level paths
-New map
-New sub-weapon
-New music
-Music on the title screen
-New enemies
-New bosses
After I get through the story I'll give you an example of each.

--STORY--
1476, Romania. A terrifying castle rises up from the mist. Along with the castle rose a dark powerful being named Count Dracula Vlad Tepes. A man named Trevor Belmont was fated to defeat the powerful vampire, aided by a witch named Sypha, Dracula's own son Alucard, and a pirate named Grant DeNasty. Together the team traversed the dark halls of Castlevania, defeating the count and his countless minions.

In 1777 a young child was born, and abandoned on a merchant ship with nothing but a headband with a mysterious crest, and the name Armund. The sailors raised the child on the high seas, and taught him the ways of being a sailor. Armund grew to be one of the greatest men that the merchant ship ever saw.

Late 1797, word started to spread of the legends of Count Dracula, and his tyranny in the land of Romania. It was about that time, that Armund ran into an old Romanian man in Serbia. The old man knew a lot about the history of Count Dracula, and his reign of terror in Romania. The old man recognized the crest on Armund's bandanna, and told him that it belonged to the DeNasty clan, and that his ancestor helped defeat Dracula. Armund decided to leave his life on the high seas to seek out more answers about his ancestry.

Romania, 1800. It's been 3 years since Alucard defeated his father in battle and has gone into eternal slumber. Armund's search has taken him to the mountains of Romania, not far from the town of Jova. A mysterious letter hinted that he might be able to find answers in the castle of Count Olrox, a servant of Count Dracula's. Armund set out of Olrox's castle, armed only with an enchanted barbed rope from Serbia. This will truly be the greatest and most arduous adventure of Armund DeNasty's life.

--New GFX/Levels--

The level pictured is level 2, The Royal Chessboard. All of the level's graphics are brand new, along with the level's design, and the actual level path, leaving nothing of the original level.

--New Map--

This is the new map. Seeing how the game takes place around the same time as SotN, I wanted to have the same kind of map. We also needed a new map because it's a different castle, with new level paths in it.

--New Sub-Weapon--

Pictured above is Armund using the Laurels. The idea was taken straight out of Castlevania 2. They take the place of the stopwatch, and using them takes 8 hearts, but they give you temporary invincibility.

--New Music--
This hack has a completely new soundtrack, scored by optomon. All of the songs are completely original, except Dance of Pales. Dance of Pales is a song played in SotN in the Olrox's Quarters section of the castle. You can download the .nsf here: http://chorusofmysteries.googlepages.com/downloads

--New Enemies--
(stolen from our site)

Skeleape- These are what Olrox keeps around instead of Axe Armors, and they are a lot more intense. The skeleape moves back and forth quickly, stopping erratically and throwing nega-boomerangs (like the ones Evil Trevor has in SotN) They take four hits to kill, but they have a weakness...

--New Bosses--
(stolen from our site)

Slogra- Level 3's Boss. Slogra awaits you on top of Olrox's castle. When you encounter him he runs quickly around the screen, and jumps high into the air. He throws bones at you, and shoots fireballs.

Sweet! It's pretty rare these days to see hacks this extensive, and it was a pleasure to beta test. Bravo!

I think I'll try this based alone on the fact that it has a NES mix of Dance of Pales (which was well done btw). I hope it's a good hack.

Seems good so far. I put it on a disk and tried to play it on my playstation with imbnes, but it locked up at the beginning of the second level, right after I killed the little wiggly plant thing and tried to go to the right. I'll give it another try on a different emulator soon.

Thank you for this report. It sounds like there are a couple things that could have crashed it. I will look into it.

Been enjoying it so far. I just got past the eyeball beast boss (that was pretty hard, but my main problem was I kept running out of time) At least this game isn't as frustrating to play as Dracula X (on SNES). The graphics are good, for the most part. Keep in mind, I never played Castlevania 1 for the NES, ever, so I don't really know how it compares tp the original game, other than the first stage or two I played before applying the IPS patch.

Yeah, difficulty is sort of what the original was all about for some reason, so we tried to make it as fair as possible. I actually think some parts of this game are actually even more fair that the original game was. I'm happy that you're enjoying it so far.

Hey Goog whatever you've been drinking, pass some of that over my way sometime! Oh yeah *Hits Googie with a cartoon mallet!*

To Dr. Mario & optomon: You guys made an awsome CV1 hack, over a year's work shows how much blood and sweat you guys put to make this hack happen. Right now I'm up to level 4, I love the water women! It's a bit harder than the original CV but I'm going to finish this hack by tonight!

I'm glad I'm interested in NES hacking, my brother plays his Nes carts all the time in his den. He even own the CV cart too, will this hack be able to work on the NES hardware?

It should work, and I hope it does, because I plan on getting it on a cart myself. Oh, and as a great honor to me at least. Mr. P of Mr. P's Castlevania Realm played the hack and loved it. So keep it coming, I mean half of the reason I do this is to hear from you guys.

If this'll work on the real NES hardware I'm down to use this cart of SMB...

I'm not sure how to go about it, but a friend of mine a few blocks away has an NES, works in mint condition too. And yeah, the big ass chip is in there, and to think I've held on to this cart since 1985. ^_____^'

I can say, wonderful job on the hack, it's great to see a project this large come together, and actually finish. Congratulations on the release. I've played up to level 3's boss, and cannot progress, because I suck at the original castlevania games, but it's a fun hack, and all the changes were done very nicely. Too bad I'm too sucky to get to Olrox, I'd like to see the shadow effect you mention on the site.

Well I'm hoping that it will work on real hardware. We've gotten two comments on it not working on certain emulators, but like with imbnes it might just be a compatibility issue. I know there are a few bugs with that emulator. Once we find out what's going on with that though, I'm going to talk to a guy to find out what games are compatible with this hack for when I get it put on a cart.

TheGreatGuy: I'm not even all that great at the original myself, so go ahead and use cheats if you want to. I won't be offended, I'll actually be happier if you do, so you can see the game in full.

Well, if you insist. Slogra was the only boss I really had trouble with, I had to refight Gaibon, but nowhere near as difficult as Slogra, maybe they should've switched places. The Cross and III powerup made it ludicrously easy against Olrox, and finishing the game wasn't too hard either. Maybe I should'nt have held onto those for so long. Still, great job on it, and I must give you two credit for all the work, especially the coding changes, overall, very awesome.
