Ok I'm collaborating all of my SMB3 hack info right here and throwing in some preliminary stuff too.

Here's the movies:
Air meter and status bar

Ground pound

Pipe launching

Preliminary info:

Ok this hack I plan to turn it into adventure RPG of sorts. You will be able to level up to earn abilities like the triple jump and butt stomp. What I'd like to do is make the point of the most levels be finding a item and returning the item to a certain spot. If what I am thinking works, it could prove to be a very fun idea. Anyways, look for updates in this thread and releases. This hack will NOT be a full 8 world hack. At the most, 5 worlds will be completed.

Holy fuck!!!!!

Ok, I've stopped drooling.

Please o please do not give up on this incredible project. This is already the best SMB3 hack ever with what you have already implemented. If you ever need help with level design, please let me know.

For safety reasons, you really should let me store a copy of what you have on my drive...for safety reasons..

I really should release my SMB 3 hack so you can see my level design.

Ignoring all the stupid bullshit in the general screenshot thread, I'd like to say holy fuck - this is awesome.

All you need is a wall jump, and then you have the basis for a pretty incredible project.

And your RPG based idea is very, VERY similar to that of Wario Land 3? Ever played it?

Wario starts off with no abilities in the game, he cannot even swim. Each level has four colour coded treasure chests, each opened with a key of the corresponding colour (4 of each in each level, like the chests). Inside the chests are either objects that help to progress through the game (triggering events in the overworld to open up new levels) or new abilities (such as the ground pound, picking up objects, swimming etc). These new abilities help you to reach previously unreachable keys, which lead to more abilities and more levels and so on.

It's an incredible concept, and if you do something similar, it'd be awesome.

I also really hope that you finish this one completely. It's sounding like it will be really fun. Just don't pull an original SMB3 and implement cool ideas and then use them once... I'm looking at you Giant World. MAke sure there is a decent amount of stuff that depend on you using things like the ground pound. A good idea would be to have levels that you need to go back to after you've earned one of the new abilities in order to complete some sort of task.

Yeah, thats basically the concept which I described above, which Wario Land 3 was based around.

It'd need some pretty fucking clever level design though. A nice variety of different puzzles and a decent learning curve.

Yeah lol you just finished your post first. I think reguardless this hack would need some really clever level design.

Please don't drop this project, I'll be so sad.
But yeah, 5 worlds long is a pretty good idea, I forgot who's also making a SMB3 hack with 4 to 5 worlds being done. Nice work so far!

Now imagine if L vs. M would be revived also and released together with this hack, but we all know that hack is dead.

Stop reading in my brain and stealing my ideas! I wanted to do some sort of RPG SMB3 too
Whatever; we'll see how each of us handle this RPG-ish look

Anyways, as I already said, well done so far; keep up the good job.
And MMC5 ? Neat idea, it seems there are so much possibilities with that... I'm wondering if you'll use it for some cool graphical effects? (now I want to add this mapper too )

If you wanna do this mapper Jasp just talk with me about it on MSN I can help ya through it, it was amazingly easier than I thought it would be. Yeah, graphical effects are one thing, but I'll tell ya the big thing Im thinking of using it for in private.

I think your hack could also use a musical overhaul.

(seriously, there aren't enough of these in hacks. )

Booooyah cherris. See the star meter at the bottom right? As you collect cherries, it fills up. After that, you can generate a star

Dahrk, you never cease to amaze me...

Edit: When you make a release, I'll do my best to provide good game tester feedback...

Keep it up! Seems you're back into hacking again. It'd be interesting to see if a mapper with additional sound channels, like the Japanese Castlevania 3, would work.

MMC5 expands on the sound capabilities but I'm not a sound person. We'll see if I ever get into it though.

how did you handle $8001? did you hard code the corresponding mmc5 register or do you have an "interpreter" that handles all writes? i'm only asking because i'm currently converting an mmc3 game to mmc5.

I hardcoded every bank swap by hand and ran an unaltered version of the hack side-by-side to make sure I was getting to the right banks.

I don't suppose that carrying objects like in SMB2 is possible, eh?
Of course it is. There's nothing about it that exceeds the NES' hardware capabilities.
