This is kind of a lame question, but can anyone tell me how to find/extract the default sound files (startup, shutdown, etc.) on the XP and Vista discs, or I guess point me to a download. I kinda messed it up, accidentally deleting a few of them from my hard drive. ____________________ |

I always just turn the system sounds off. I find them highly annoying, especially on other people's laptops. Maybe it's because my parents have the earliest bedtimes of anyone in the universe and I was long accustomed to using the computer while they were asleep and so had to be quiet about it. |

I'll have to go into the registry and manually fix part of that. I've got it using the Vista sounds fine, but a few of the XP ones are missing and when clicked on give an error which closes the settings page. See here.
In this case, clicking on 'Asterisk' for example causes the error. Vista mouse cursors are still in the same years-old XP format, they animate and all fine. I love experimenting with operating systems. ____________________ |

I always leave system sounds off on both XP and Kubuntu, as they can bother me when listening to music :/ |

Guys, I'm pretty sure he wants the sound files, not your opinion of them
At any rate, it seems strange that it would crash the properties dialog, since it usually just says it can't find the sound. So you say you've got all the Vista sounds back? You could try putting other .wav files in the C:\Windows\Media folder and renaming them to the files you're missing, such as "Windows XP Error" for the Asterisk sound. |

Yep. I'm running XP using the Vista sounds. A few XP sound files are missing, and as you figured correctly, that dialog box crashes if I click in some places. I'm pretty sure it can be fixed in the registry. ____________________ |

Something else is wrong if missing files is making it crash rather than simply display a missing file message. |

Yeah, usually it'll just say "File not found" or something... I know, I've deleted them several times
Past that, you could always try changing the sound scheme to "No sounds" and adding them in manually, then resaving the sound scheme... (Speaking of which, anyone know where I can get Utopia? I miss that) ____________________ I dealt with it. |
