So, what games, in your opinion, either didn't get the attention they deserved or were hyped up too much? I, for one, think that Quest 64 was underrated. Now, of course it isn't perfect. The graphics and sound were subpar, and it was too linear for my taste. But considering it was one of the few RPGs for the N64, I'm suprised it didn't get a little more attention. The battle system in particular caught my eye. I haven't seen another system where you combine several types of magic to unlock new spells. Turn-based 3d battle systems are pretty rare, too. I've never gotten too far in the game, so I can't say much about the plot, but I think most of those ideas had some potential.

Now, even though it's among my favorite games, I consider Oblivion to be overrated. Of course, there was continuous hype about it for upwards of two years, so what can you expect? I was hoping the AI would be a bit more, well... intelligent. Also, the stock leveling system just plain sucked. I didn't get too far before loading it up with mods, but I heard that common bandits started dropping Daedric (read: best armor in game) when you were level 20. Now, I still like the game, but I'm glad I got the PC version so I can put mods in.

I also liked Quest 64, but it was by no means all that great, it's a bit underrated, yes. As for Oblivion, it's good, but I prefer Morrowind, more story. I don't think it's that overrated though, it's still good. Anyway, teh list:
Overrated:
----------Final Fantasy VII
----------Halo
-Those are the only ones that really stick out for me.
Underrated:
-Golden Sun games
-Boktai Series
-The N64 Castlevania games
-Quest 64
-Final Fantasy IX and VIII
-Armored Core games(Not really underrated, so much as unknown)

I might update with more later, but that's off the top of my head.

Halo
Ocarina of Time
Grand Theft Auto
Those games that consist solely of watching a girl's gigantic boobies bounce up and down. Sure I like boobs, but where is the gameplay (other than masturbation)?

Underrated games:
Just about any 2D PC game. Some of my old favourites are Kroz, King's Quest, and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure. Computers existed before the Internet, people. Also, Faxanadu for NES, which I thought was a great action RPG, what Zelda II should have been more like.

I'd say that Chibi-Robo was underrated. The game was very well made. Most people probably avoided it though because they didn't want to be seen with it but it was a game that made you think. You have a huge house to explore and every step you take drains your battery, so you must keep close to the wall outlets for a recharge. It's quite challenging and fun to figure out how to reach the upper levels of the house.

I knew I was forgetting something! Ys! Ys is very underrated. Although the first few games were kinda weird(Run into stuff to kill it!), the new ones are filled with win and awesome. Also, I think that nowadays shmups in general are kinda underrated, no one really knows about them anymore.

Overrated:----------Final Fantasy VII

YES. VII really wasn't that great. It's a pretty good game, but just not what people make it seem. VI and IV managed to make me cry. Well, as in, I feel tears being built up.

Katamari Damacy, I believe, was somewhat underrated. Not many gamers I know actually know about this game. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is definitely underrated. That game was great. I don't think F-Zero X got much attention, either. Suikoden was also pretty underrated, I believe.

Family Guy Video Game! is definitely overrated, as I see kids at my school talk about it. Ocarina of Time's also overrated.

There are others that I'd mention, but I'm too lazy to.

The N64 Zelda games

Now wait just a second.

I'm with you on OoT. Love the game, but it's not as good as a lot of people claim.

Majora's Mask, though? Outside of Zelda 2, that's the only one I see criticized rather often for gameplay reasons... it just doesn't get the same excessive praise as OoT, LttP, FFVII, or other games I commonly associate with the term "overrated".

You just earned your name. No idea why they aren't more popular...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic seems to be a bit overrated to me. The light and dark side choices are all painfully obvious and most of them are of the "I'll give you all my credits" (light side) or "I don't care about your problem, but I'll kill you for asking!" (dark side) variety. Plus, they don't really change the course of the game, save for the last portion and one party member... past that, the combat system isn't particularly new (just arranged in a different manner) and the animations get highly repetitive. Never thought I'd actually get tired of seeing lightsaber combat.

Final Fantasy - Anything from this series, period. Anymore, the games have taken a dive for me ever since I put in V back in my younger years in an emulator. That's not to say I won't put in a few from time to time...but Fami giving XII a perfect score deserves a glare or five thousand.
Pokémon - I don't care what new game is out and what's so great about it...nothing beats G/S/C and even that's over and done with.
Smash Brothers - Play a real fighter...umkay?

Well-known and worth the time:
Most anything Metroid - Two words: Bad. Ass.
Valkyrie Profile Series - Very much worth people's time in terms of RPGs.
Most anything by Nippon Ichi/ATLUS - Disgaea 1 and 2, La Pucelle, Makai Kingdom...the list goes on...

Underrated:
All on the SNES...
Most of the good fighters from the SNES: Killer Instinct, GW:ED...
Mostly anything played on zbattle.net that didn't make it stateside: Yuu Yuu Hakusho Tokubetsuhen (play this -now-), Puyo Puyo (only made it starting on the GBA)...
Tetris Battle Gaiden, Super Bombliss, Super Tetris 3 - Worthy of a -finished- tournament one of these days.
Valis - TG-16 oh wow...too bad the ports to the Genesis and SNES were sub-par.

Sim City 2000 (even in 2007)
McDonalds Treasure Adventure (or whatever, for Genesis. Nobody will play it because it's a "McDonalds" game)

Q64 = rox, Obliv = sux

I'm always confused by the number of people who say Quest was underrated. I played it and actually thought it absolutely sucked ass. Maybe I'll load it up again and see if I was just being biased.

On the note of Oblivion, it definitely needs a few specific mods, but with those installed I think the game becomes absolutely excellent. I hope Bethseda sees what the modding community did to improve the game an incorporates that into the base game of their next installment.

Anyways, my list and reasoning:

Overrated:
-Final Fantasy 7. As to why, this says it all. For the tl;dr-ers, the basic idea is that the gameplay is too bland, the characters too stupid, the story too nonsensical and the symbolism too retardedly quasi-Christian to merit it anything than a "meh" rating.

-Ocarina of Time. I'd give this one a solid 8 or maybe even 9, but it irks me when people start calling this the best game of all time. The story is meh; epic certainly, but there is very little in the way of character development, and the olot is all too predictable for 99% of the game.

Underrated:

-Deus Ex. The best, maybe the ONLY worthwhile single player mode in a first person shooter. It forgoes the usual "campaign" style single player mode, and instead presents the player with an open-ended story, with multiple approaches to each situation depending on how the player wants to play it. (Combat vs. Stealth, Physical talents vs. Technology-based talents, playing a good or a bad guy, ect.) I know, I know, this is not so underrated in the world of PC gaming, but the fact is that there are so few PC gamers and so few console gamers are willing to try this game that I have to say it. (Note: do not get the sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, as it is nothing like the first one and is a giant steaming turd)

-Ultima 7. Every open-ended RPG owes it's life to this game. ESPECIALLY the whole Baldur's Gate / Neverwinter Nights series; In fact, both games are so similar that BG / NWN borders on plagiarism at times. If you like KOTOR, Fable, Fallout 1/2, or Morrowind / Oblivion, you should try this game. You'll need to download a DOS emulator (like DOSbox) to run it properly, but it's worth it. The world is HUGE, but each NPC has it's own individual and personal daily schedule that it keeps to, including eating, sleeping, working, and sitting around the house, which even modern games are still struggling to recreate. The main story is decent, and there's all sorts of fun shit to do on the side, which is the real draw to the game. Completing everything in this game will definitely take you a while, and then you can have some fun coming up with your own personal objectives.

Daggerfall - The second game in the Elder Scrolls series, before Morrowind / Oblivion. The world is randomly generated unlike the two games after it, and it is MUCH bigger than either of them, although most of the world map terrain is not interesting unless you are near a landmark. The game is much crazier than the two games after it; it is much easier to become incredibly powerful in some ways, but if you fuck up the game WILL punish you for it. Some of my favorite gaming memories are in this game.

Star Ocean: The Second Story - Probably my favorite RPG. Claude's view of the story is absolutely epic, while Rena's is less informative but many times more emotional. With either character there is a ton of things to complete in this game, including the absolutely badass optional dungeon which is probably the hardest thing I've ever done in an RPG. I'm playing through it again on the hardest difficulty and it's definately an interesting challenge.

Megaman Legends - A great game that a lot of people got scared of because of the simple idea of 3D Megaman. Instead of just trying to transplant the existing Megaman world into 3D levels, they created a whole new world just for Megaman's 3D debut, and it works perfectly. The story is great, the gameplay is fun but challenging still, and the amount of things to do in the game will keep you entertained for quite a while.

Mother fuckin' pwnage. I think I've beaten that game 10+ times, various play throughs on both the PS2 and PC. Too bad IW (while still a great game) was a pretty bad sequel, it failed in comparison (I blame it for being set a little too far into the future, and well the characters blew, and where was the music, and it was half as long as the first, and and and ...). I usually have to bring in Deus Ex into these lists, but good thing I'm not alone on that!

On another note though, I just get a laugh at how many people instantly seem to pick out OoT all the time, whenever discussions like this are brought up. I loved it, but I guess you guys have been to GameFAQ's too often or something? In the end there's not much to argue that it's practically a 3D retelling of Link to the Past (which has always been my favorite). But, okay. I guess its overated ... I guess? Not nearly as much compared to any Final Fantasy out there and so on. Then again maybe I'm just a Zelda fanboy, even though I still really don't like Wind Waker.

And yeah, Final Fantasy VII. I liked the music, the environments, the gameplay, and that's about it. Characters are worthless, plot is retarded, fanboys, Sephiroth, etc.

Onward to victory.

Overated
- All Final Fantasy's. I loved a lot of them, but I'll take Breath of Fire III/IV, Chrono Tigger/Cross, Vagrant Story, Star Ocena I/II, Secret of Mana/SD3, Suikoden's ... etc over them anyday.
- Halo 2 ... I liked Halo PC.
- Dead or Alive series. Fuck that shit. =D, I absolutely hate those games.
- All new Sonic related things.
- Pokemon games.
- Blizzard.

Underated
- Thunder Force series. Its always "Gradius and R-Type this and that", now I love those series as well, but freaking Thunder Force! IV has the most metal Genesis OST of all time, and the games are just crazy.
- Turrican series and well like others said, shmups in general.
- Suikoden series. They're epic.
- The Rush racing games.
- Zelda II. Yes.
- Power Stone I/II, or just a lot of Dreamcast games.
- Lots of N64 games like Blast Corps, Vigilante 8, etc.
- Metroid series. Can't wait for Prime 3!
- Half-Life series.
- Total Annihilation/Supreme Commander.

That's all I can think of for now.

Overrated:

Dragon Quest series - Old-school feel and world famous art/music team, but the gameplay in them just doesn''t interest me.

Super Metroid - Much like Zero Mission, this game suffers from a simple yet major problem that could have been corrected literally via 1 byte. The final boss had so little HP it ruined the entire experience.

Counter Strike - Constant 1-hit skills and having to wait between spawns? No thank you.

Underrated:

Mega Man X4- No explanation needed. Mega Man X4 is the greatest game of all time.

Sonic Heroes (PC)- Where do I start? Upbeat soundtrack, improved graphics, proper gamepad support, and pure fun all around. Sega blew it releasing this some 9 months after the other systems, at a budget price, and with no attempt of marketing whatsoever. Not to mention being alongside Halo 2 and San Andreas which was a proverbial death sentence for even the best games that holiday season.

Puyo Pop Fever - No matter what system you obtain it on, this is a must-play title. I'm coining a new term here, "massively-multiplatform". Something which didn't carry over as much to it's international appearances. Look up the game, you'll see versions of this alone for many systems.

Saints Row - While yes, it was inspired by GTA as many games are now, Saints Row refines a few key elements and cuts out several unneeded ones. As an example... Instead of airplanes which didn't really become too useful in GTA, you get far better physics in general. Driving over cars using a semitruck and watching them explode underneath you rocks. Swimming is optional in this, you're allowed to warp to shore anytime rather than be stuck manually finding a suitable place.

The Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction - Pick up a bus or any other carryable object, run up the nearest wall, jump off, hit the targeting button, and send your weapon go flying at it's target. The combo system alone makes this game awesome. In addition, the Xbox version works flawlessly for 360
owners.

Other underrated games:

Mega Man X8 (PC)
Sonic Adventure DX (PC)
Vigilante 8
F-Zero series
Serious Sam series
MechAssualt series
Full Auto

And I'll comment on one more title. I'm not claiming it to be underrated or overrated:

Guild Wars - Great graphics, character design, soundtrack, skill system, etc. However, too many people use it like an IRC client instead of an MMO as it was intended to be. This is something not quite so prevalent in WoW or any other online game I've played.

And since when is Link's Awakening underrated? That game was reviewed high by every magazine when it came out and everyone and their mother owns a GB copy of it.

I don't think GTA 3 is/was overrated, but it's safe to say that Vice City and San Andreas weren't exactly groundbreaking and were bought en masse just because.

I'm a huge combat flying simulation guy, and two of my favorite games of all time are Red Baron (and the 2nd, even though it was buggy), and Crimson Skies (even the Xbox one was cool). All of about 15 people know about these games and it's a bummer.

If you play a game like DoA Extreme Beach Volleyball 2 and expect stellar gameplay, you're a fucking retard. Oh. Wait. lololol.

theclaw: Puyo Pop Fever isn't underrated. Its just pretty much unheard/shrugged off by the mainstream gaming community.

Overrated (because mentioning things that are popular in mainstream gaming makes you cool)

-FPS games that are not Unreal Tournament or Goldeneye. ESPECIALLY World War II ones.

-Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. Sure, its an excellent fighter. But then again, I'm a 2d whore.

-Marvel Vs Capcom 2. Unless you enjoy tournaments where its the same fight 20 times in a row.

-World of Warcraft. I play it, and even I think its overrated. There are much better, more unique MMO's out there.

Underrated
- MS Saga: A new Dawn. A really sold RPG that really didn't get enough attention. Sure, it may be a bit bland in terms of story and voice acting... but the gameplay is excellent. FrankenGundams FTW.

- Along the same lines, Gundam Battle Assault 2. Fun little fighter.

- God Hand. an AMAZING beat'em'up game with a lot of gameplay depth. A lot of people thought it sucked though.

- Megaman Legends. Enough said.

-Namco X Capcom. It blew pretty hard, yeah. But it you can piledrive a t-rex as Mayor Mike Haggar. If that's not awesome, I don't know what is.
