I finally made part of my new hardware work (the rest arrives later this week). But, as normal for NT-based operating systems, changing the mobo caused major problems.

I'll quote an email I wrote to a relative. "Unlike XP or 2000, Vista won't install
from the disc's bootable menu IF you enter the exact same serial number as the existing installation. Not only that, but the XP installer can't remove or bypass Vista's new boot loader making that not an option. AND I don't have free space on the C drive to make another Vista install either."

This means I need to make Vista think it's no longer installed, or remove that boot loader so I can install XP. Can anyone help please?

Delete the Vista partition?

I still don't get exactly what you're asking. What is currently installed, and what can you currently boot into?

I'm running Knoppix from the live disc. Currently neither XP nor Vista will install. XP fails because upon the first reboot, Vista's boot loader appears meaning there's no sign of XP at all. Vista fails for two different reasons. A being I don't have enough hard drive space to make a separate install. Or B, the fact that unlike XP and 2000, Vista refuses to install over an installation using the same CD key as the one you try to overwrite.

You could always try reformatting the hard disk, thereby erasing everything on it.

If anyone here knows how to edit the MBR from within Linux, that would be one of the least-risky options I may have.

If you've got a Vista DVD, you could boot it and choose "Startup Repair" from the menu and see if that fixes it. Or boot the XP CD, go into the recovery console, and fixmbr and see if that works.

Progress report- I unplugged my two drives with the issues and installed Windows 2000 on a 10GB I had sitting around. Now I need a/an program(s) which can scan hard drives, and rebuild the partition table. This should be simple, the data is physically still on those two. I'll plug the drives back after googling for and downloading recovery utilities...

Last I checked, most Linux distros will mount NTFS. Why not get you files that you don't want to lose that way, and then reinstall everything?

Yeah, use a boot CD or something, scan the drives, take your files off of them, and nuke Vista.

I don't think there's any specific tools to override the boot loader next, and the fact it makes such a thing... well...

I'm never ever getting Vista now.
