Hi everyone.

NHY here. You probably don't know me but I occassionally lurk on the forums here and have posted as either Neo Hyper Yoshi or under my real name in the past.

Anyways, onto business. I've already shown screenshots of my SMK hack, SMK: Nightmare Edition in the screenshot thread but I'll show 2 of them again at the end of this post in case anyone hasn't seen them.

The idea behind this hack is not to create new tracks that can be used only as time trail or match race tracks but to work around the AI to create harder versions of the original SNES tracks. From play testing this so far, its alright at 50cc and 100cc but at 150cc, it gets interesting!

Anyways, here is the link to patch file.

This is the first release and is nowhere near complete so I'll welcome any constructive comments and critisms that you may have about this hack.

With regards,

NHY

Does this mean that the rubber-band AI is tweaked or that the characters just play harder?

None of those actually. The track designs were changed in such a way that that rubber band AI isn't effected but I taken out all possible shortcuts and made more the tracks more unforgiving. Well, thats the intention of the hack.

Admittedly, I know no ASM and not a mathmatical person anyway.

Ohh a new fellow SMK hacker

Looks to me like you have changed the tile set for each of the original tracks (just looking at the screen shots.)

As not all the tracks use the same tile offsets for corner bits etc. this must have taken you some time. I'll download this when I get home and take a proper look.

This also will make the game hardcore as if you go off the track you'll fall.

*Edit*

Okay so you have changed the tile set for the standard courses. It's ok play - it does make the game a fair bit harder. I don't think anyone knows where the items on the tracks are located yet(?), however there are one or two tracks where '?' boxes and coins are just to the side of the track, you should winden the track in those places. Also on a few tracks you need to tidy up the tiles used around the edge so they fit.

Out of intrest what are your future plans for this hack? If you don't want to play with the hex side of things maybe you could think about changing some of the drivers? Wario, Link etc. That would kick ass. I don't have time to do them - I'm sick of drawing players after doing 7 out of 8 of my new karters. I'd gladly give you a hand with chaning the pallettes, drivers names and digging you out the lower body parts etc.
