This is for everyone wanting MP3 music in SMW.

Since it would be rather difficult to explain in techical terms why this will never, ever, EVER happen, AND expect people to understand it, this post will take the obvious approach: most MP3s are BIGGER than most SNES ROMs. (note how I said "most") If you were to put something as big as an MP3 into something as small as a SNES ROM, you would have to displace ALL the data for it to fit. So the end result would be a music player that only played one track. If that is your goal, then just get WinAMP to play your music.

About the MP3 to SMW issue...

I believe d4s had actually, at one point, coded a semi-working system for this that played Mario Twins on the title screen.

I don't think it ever got too far, but it wasn't a blatant failure from what I remember.

Also: This patch won't work for me, either. ~_~;

Hmm... this seems exciting. I'm not sure what music fits into SMW, so I cant help there.
However... a while ago, I had an idea about custom music in SMW and other games. However, I dont know much about N-SPC, but I think this should be possible. Anyway, Mario Paint had a custom music maker/editor. If Mario Paint uses the N-SPC engine, wouldnt it be possible to hack the music editor to fit a music engine... like hacking Mario Paint and the editor to use the SMAS instruments/songs. Then, you could use the music editor to create custom music and so on.

Also, does anyone know what music format HAL used in its games? I think KSS used aLttP's N-SPC format. The reason I ask is because EarthBound's music has been hacked, and an editor is availible. If EarthBound uses N-SPC (Which I doubt, as it's format seems diffrent...) then it might be possible to modify that editor and add support for N-SPC...

Just some of my thoughts. Also, if you want MP3/CD quality music, then start making a full Satellaview emulator, and a virtual satellite station for the emulator to connect to. Thats pretty much the only was to get true SNES CD/MP3 quality music in a game/hack.

For those who can't get this patch working. Use a clean SMW Rom (headered 512KB), patch it with the IPS file and then open the ROM in LunarMagic and save one level. Done.

Yes, I did patch it to a clean rom.
Open it up in LM and save a level. It'll work then.

Try ripping an SPC of a song made in the song editor and tell me this will work properly.

Yeah, I remember too there was some discussion about how the process required such a low bitrate, that file size was no longer an issue because an MP3 reduced to that bitrate would be reasonably small. However, his hack wasn't capable of sound effects. However, no matter what you do, sequenced music like N-SPC is always going to be much smaller than wave/MP3/etc files, and in a ROM that's max 6MB, that's quite important.

can I make a small suggestion ? in marios time machine when mario is on his surf board, to get other warps or time portals the music from overworld screen, can that be added to the patch if it is N-SPC compatible ?

Well, took me a while, but I eventually did get it to work, I think it has to be in a specific order:
1. Patch the... patch to a clean 512KB Super Mario World rom.
2. Go directly into Lunar Magic and Save any level of your choice. (don't know why you would need to find a level you want to save but, whatever.)
3. Open in the Emulator of your choice and enjoy. (All I know is that it works in zsnes, cause thats all I use.)

This is what I did. Hope it works for anyone else who wants it to.

Alright, I got it now.
I don't know what I did wrong before, especially because I did nothing different this time, but it works now.

Ah, yes, that one's awesome. I once rented the game just for the music.

I downloaded Mario's Time Machine's soundtrack out of curiosity. There are a lot of creative reinstrumentations of the SMW theme, though none are that suited to a platformer level.

Nice job on the Yoshi's Cookie and Ghost Valley tunes, Mattrizzle. I just listened to the Ghost Valley theme and SMW's Ghost House theme back-to-back, and while they're very similar, Ghost Valley is more urgent and dark. It should work very well in a hack. (Now I'm wondering what a Subconian ghost house would be like... Full of Phantos and flying Hawkmouths?)

Unfortunately, I must say that I currently cannot add any of the Cave Story conversions to this patch, as the SPCs converted using blackhole's program are tremendously huge. None of them use call loop commands, and many tags are unnecessarily repeated, meaning that it would take eons to manually reduce their size.

However, I do have these alternatives:
  • Recreate the remixed cave tune found in the SMB2 prototype. This should be fairly easy, as only the drum channel really has to be altered.
  • If I can't get that to work right, simply add in the SMB/SMB3 cave tune.
