Awesome!!!
I saw a really nice hack of final fantasy 1 that used mmc3 instead of mmc1, to enhance the handling of sprites, it was a really nice improvement for ff1. maybe you could also do a mapper patch for final fantasy 2, i hope this will lead to an enhanced version of it too ![]() |

Hello I am a modest collector from Eastern Europe. I'm not very rich, so order cartridges from Japan unprofitable: shipping costs more than the game. I want to order a homemade cartridge. But there is one game that will not work there. Because mapper of this game is MMC1 (in other games MMC3).
This game is Clash at Demonhead (aka Dengeki Big Bang!). I want this game for sixteen years, since I read it about it in The Great Dragon magazine (here's the article - one, two). It was a shock for the child who did not know about Zelda, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest (because of the specific pirate market in the country). Huge world, freedom of movement. In addition, it is harder shooter who knocks tons of adrenaline. Order homemade cartridge for one game is unprofitable as the license order from Japan. I do not know how difficult to change mapper. If this is hard work, I apologize in advance. But if someone can convert it to MMC3 (no difference, English or Japanese version — for me, Japanese have never been an obstacle), I'll be very grateful. Thank you all in advance. |

Posted by shanem Yeah in 1995 I was 15. My 1995 involved chrono trigger, final fantasy 4, super metroid, link to the past, mario world, other snes classics. I wasn't playing nes in '95 because top loaders weren't so easy to find (got tired of failing zif systems) so I focused on the snes. Also I didn't have a gameboy. I think the first gameboy I ever owned was my used sp that I bought in 2007ish. I thought pokemon hacking is popular because of all the kiddies of that generation growing up with it. Where did all this info come from? Fans of the game? ____________________ http://16bitgamer.forumotion.ca/ |

Eh, why not? This is a thread to post about your possible future projects/interests. Games that you are thinking about hacking in the future.
One of the games I always had an interest in hacking since the day I entered the ROM hacking seen back in '99, is Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. I always wanted to do a heavy modification of that game. It's one of those underrated but very fun games. I kow it was meant for Americans as an easier Final Fantasy title, but it still fun nonetheless. Another game I have an interest in hacking at some point, is Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. Such a great game, and it had a lot of new things in it which made it unique. I'd love to colorize the game, and make all-new levels, and possibly do some other things. Now, off of Nintendo, and on to Sony. Lately, I've had a new interest in PlayStation hacking. I never cared to hack PlayStation games before, but I'm also in the Resident Evil community, and there is a team which is currently modding the released beta of Resident Evil 1.5. I have in interest in hacking Final Fantasy VIII and Resident Evil 2. I would get 3DStudio Max and make brand new backgrounds for these games, change the dialogue in Final Fantasy VIII, and learn to mess with the scripted events. If I were to make a brand new game out of it, I would remove the FMV scenes from the game, since they'd no longer be relevant. PlayStation hacking is a little more advanced, but I'm glad to see that it's starting to pick up a little steam now. There is someone else in the Resident Evil community is modding Resident Evil Survivor, turning it from a FPS game to an old-school Resident Evil title. I still have an interest in getting into PlayStation hacking at some point. Possibly sooner than you think. So this is my list of possible future projects that I've been thinking about lately. I would love to hear yours. It might also help motivate others. ![]() ____________________ My YouTube Channel |

Posted by dirtbag Thanks man, I really appreciate that. I'm gonna take a look at Epic Edit this weekend.
Posted by RetroRain There's a hack at RHDN that makes the game more challenging. You can snag it here, I personally like the game. I always wanted to hack FF1, a friend helped me with an ASM that when you hold down the B button you run fast.

This is a hack that includes both SMB1 and SMB2J. Almost every single known SMB glitch has been fixed.
Side A: This is a hack of SMB2J that brings all the level designs and other various data over from SMB1. I hear all this hype from many other forums of people wanting to add SMB2J stuff to SMB1, such as Wind, Upside-Down Piranha Plants, more Worlds, etc. So I did something about it. I thought to myself: If the point of the hack is to make SMB1 like SMB2J, why not just hack SMB2J? So that's what this is. SMB1 with all the features of SMB2J. The levels are the same, I've just incorporated SMB2J stuff in various places to add and show off its features. I've done all the work on this myself so that people can now rip their SMB1 levels and paste them to this without having to worry about the ASM work (assuming they don't know it). There are no Worlds A-D in Side A of this hack as I NOP'd the code that does a check to see how many stars are on the title screen. World 9 is still intact. What I did was recreate the Minus World from both SMB versions (NES and FDS) to make a World! The NES Minus World has 1 level, while the FDS version has 3. So 3+1=4 or 1 World. This is better because the SMB2J 9 World is based off of this Fantasy glitch from the original game. So doing this is only fitting. Well, minus the glitches that came with the original Minus World. I even gave the NES version a total makeover of its Minus World! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh-3PuJjFN4) 9-1 = NES version of Minus World 9-2 = FDS version of -2 9-3 = FDS version of -3 9-4 = FDS version of -1 This work took about 4 days. I've left the title screen logo wide to allow all 24 stars to be recorded (note that I just temporarily changed 0xCC3C here to $18 to show all 24 stars. It's been reverted to $00 for final release.)
Poison Mushrooms, green springs etc. can all be found in this game.
Like I've said, beta scenery and cactus have been used from SMB2J
Saving occurs upon beating 8-4; high score is also saved to SRAM upon receiving a Game Over and choosing "Quit"
Wind and flying Bloopers have been added to some stages.
Certain levels like 1-3 and 5-3 no longer share data, so you are free to create new levels or scenery. On 5-3 I made it a windy snowy level. (Since World 5 is already a snow World.)
Upside-down Piranhas have been added to various areas in appropriate places to give it an authentic "Nintendo" feel.
What's a purple beta cactus, clouds and trees doing under there?
A flying Blooper! I thought this was only found on 7-3! I wonder where else I might find these guys?
Lava underground, just like SMB2J!
A MUCH more difficult version of 7-3 (which is a harder version of 2-3).
An underwater sea current.
New invisible items have been added where there were only invisible coin blocks. Arigatou, ShaneM-chan!
Beautiful clouds from up above have replaced the Mushrooms from SMB1 to give it a more real SMB2J feel.
Wait a minute...That's a decoy!
Remember, my SMB2J is on Side B of this game!
What I did was fix up the original stages that repeat to match the VS SMB counterparts. These include repeats of 5-3 (but I left the snow and wind in), 5-4, 6-4 and 3-4 (I did the last one because it is the same level, but more challenging). Here are maps of the VS SMB stages if anybody needs them for the repeat stages I fixed: http://themushroomkingdom.net/maps/vssmb Also, in case no one realized this, I've made the maze of 4-4 to be like ANNSMB, as well as the lava pits of 7-4. The stages of 4-1 and 4-2 have also the Koopas added to them from the ANNSMB version. Here are maps in case you get stuck on 4-4: http://themushroomkingdom.net/maps/annsmb So really, this SMB1 with SRAM and SMB2J features is the best because it incorporates the greatest strengths of VS SMB, ANNSMB and the original SMB1. ==== Side B: -SRAM saving (completely redone; upon getting a Game Over on any world except 9 World; and when beating 8-4/D-4. Only saves the highest score.) -I've added features from the SNES Allstars version: *Hard Mode on Worlds A-D (where Buzzy Beetles replace Goombas and all enemies move faster, smaller platforms and anything else found in Hard Mode) *Bowsers now have their own identities when defeated in Fiery state (originally they shared Bowsers World 1-4 identities since Worlds A-D were counted as 1-4 before. I even fixed the A-1 identity glitch found in the Allstars version.) *Worlds A-D now have their own attributes and no longer share codes and limitations the original, such as spring in World B being red like they're supposed to be etc. *I've written a little routine in bank $02 to play the beta Game Over music when loading the special message for 9 World -Many sprite loading issues with OAM have been corrected -I've fixed every single SMB2J glitch known to man...including: *The timer would erroneously award player 999 seconds if the timer got down to 0 (50*999 =50, 000 points) *The platforms had a collision error where they would loop instead of kill the player if they went below the screen ($D0) *The hammer immunity glitch has been corrected where if the player went all the way to the left of the screen, the player was previously immune to hammers *The glitch on 4-2 has been corrected *Lakitu was originally supposed to throw Spinys according to the player's velocity. I fixed this. (A was getting overwritten because the JMP to bounding box control was too early.) Now Spinys bounce and Lakitu moves better. The only other version that fixed this was SMB Deluxe on GBC. *Infinite lives glitch where the player would receive a Game Over upon accumulating too many lives.(I credit this fix to Kasumi, who gave me a hand with this) *Many other glitches I corrected based on videos and the Mario wiki -New features have been added, including: *A brand new sunset palette has been added. It always bothered me that we had day and night stages but none in the evening. *Brand new snowy palette. It always bothered me that the shrubs were colored white but the ground was left brown. (I had to clear 8 bytes in the first VRAM table data to make room for this.) *Brand new bonus areas added and a hidden new level! (World 9-4 = new bonus room, World A-1 = secret hidden level within the stage... 2 exits in total! [Can you find the hidden level? ], B-1 = new bonus room with beta enemies used [can you find the hidden message? ], C-1= a very special new bonus room, D-2 = ??? [I think this stage speaks for itself]. No rooms were taken out; only stuff added
*Underwater currents [9-4 only] - These use the same wind code as on land except I had to code them to push the player around, as wind would previously only do this on land stages. *Level fixes from the Allstars version. Some of them include the fact that on the NES version it is impossible to get 5000 points as either form of Mario on some stages like 2-3 and 8-2. *I've also found a TON of beta stuff. Like unused blocks, BG scenery, etc. I think this is indeed a great work that I've done, here. Also, I've studied in-depth the FDS format and came up with my own custom header (I've created my own detailed doc of it which I will include with this). My game is the first to make use of it. I also made a SMB2J manual that I translated/created from my own notes. I also borrowed from the Wii channel's description of the game. I personally own 2 FDS copies of this game. One sealed and one opened. I used the opened one's manual. I think it should be the same as the sealed one. Link to the glitches I fixed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1nzyWWDYSvc http://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Super_Mario_Bros.:_The_Lost_Levels_glitches Here are some screenshots: Wow. Look at them beta cactus. Im'ma sure glad Shane M. found them! Brrrr! This snow is sooo a' cold! (I made snow on the ground for snowy stages. So they no longer look dry.)
Ouch! That damn hammer gave me a bump on my mama-mia head!
The beta ground with lava like in the SMAS version.
Mama mia! I was here in SMB1!
It's evening...Almost time to have the rest of that spaghetti...I hope I'm close to the Princess, now. (I know it says B-3 but it's really A-3. This was an old shot from when I was now learning how to add rooms. This has been fixed.)
The new bonus room on B-1 with beta blocks and the new beta enemy...What do those blocks spell?
The top secret level of A-1. This looks familiar...Didn't I beat this last spring? (Now 6 months later in time.)
Lakitu got over his "bug" and regained his strength! LOL XD
Finally...Someone translated this message into English for me and used beta blocks to do it in. What? underwater sea current?!? Noooo!!!! Lol
I've also made a custom .pal file which gives the NES an updated graphics feel, as if you were using A/V. SMB2J original ROM (65,000 bytes) CRC16 = BA55 My hacked SMB game CRC16 = F667 Patch it to a clean ROM with the CRC16 listed above. http://www.mediafire.com/download/ddzkgk9qcxwgyep/New_folder.zip EDIT: On Side A I didn't borrow any SMB2J stages for SMB1, what I did was use the VS SMB counterparts of the SMB1 stages. They are in different Worlds on VS SMB. ____________________ At the end, when the day is over, the only one left to face is yourself. Have you been true to yourself and made the most of your day? |

Posted by infidelity Pretty sure an NSF file is just a direct rip of the sound engine and music bytes, with a short header to let the emulator/program know it's a NSF file. I haven't made one from scratch, but I've used an already-existing NSF file for Final Fantasy to create and insert custom music into the game. The only thing different are the pointer values, obviously. |

Posted by rock5easily I finished playing this hack about a week ago. I really enjoyed it very much. Graphics are very good (freaking LOVE gravity man, it's amazing!) -- the protoman levels are much much longer than originally as insectduel mentioned in his review video today. I also liked that.
and i looooved hearing the Doom Castle song from Final Fantasy mystic quest in this hack surprisingly.
insectduel - by the way about your rock 2 yender code review a while back, l laughed so freaking hard when you said "son of a ass!" in the wily 2 level. nothing personal or anything, it just gave me a real nice laugh and smile ![]() |

Hi,
I've never posted to a forum like this, and I really just learned how to hack a large portion of different games within the last week. I've already changed a significant portion of the original Final Fantasy 1, including all new graphics for a lot of different things, new script, etc. I really am trying to make something special but I've hit a wall trying to edit the game music and change it. I've started messing with Famitracker, but I have seen a number of posts when searching that the NSF file that is produced by Famitracker can't just be plugged into the game. I've searched everywhere I could think of for editing NES music or specifically FF1 music, but everything I find leads me to a dead end. I know a hacker named Grond did FF ++ and it had new music in it, so I know its possible. I just can't figure it out. Please, any help or tools to do this would be appreciated. ____________________ Tell my tale to those who ask. Tell it truly, the ill deeds along with the good, and let me be judged accordingly. "Description:
An in depth information filled guide to the Final Fantasy Music music format." http://www.romhacking.net/documents/151/ Saw this while searching RHDN's music documents the other day. I haven't really taken much of a look at the game but if you already know how to mess with Famitracker I imagine porting music shouldn't be too difficult if you look at preexisting songs. There's also apparently a disassembly of the music driver. I've never messed with disassemblies and .asm files so I'm not exactly sure how you'd use it, but I figure it might be useful somehow. http://www.romhacking.net/documents/575/ In the future, you might wanna try looking up your game on RHDN's documents list before askin' for help, although it's always ok to get clarification! Good luck! EDIT: Oh, er, you'll need to use a Hex Editor obviously. If you don't know how to use one, there's some alright info on it on RHDN as well. http://www.romhacking.net/start/ |

Hello, I'm working on a hack of the original Final Fantasy. It is based on an early version of Grond's Final Fantasy because he had already rebalanced the characters and the enemies. So far, I've edited virtually every enemy in the game (with the exception of the bosses). Some have new attacks, some are updated versions of the same enemy. Many of the enemy sprites were taken from later FF games or Final Fantasy ++. Many of the class sprites were taken from later games, and 3 are uniquely original to my game. Ideally, I'm going to do a completely new soundtrack (although that has given me fits, so I'm working on graphics first). I've created a Facebook page and project homepage to post images and updates. Both locations serve as references for anyone who is interested in hacking Final Fantasy. I'm including a Spriter's Resources section in addition to my own images. I welcome anyone who is interested in visiting or making comments. Please follow the links below. Home Page http://www.ffreconstructed.com/ Facebook page finalfantasyreconstructed?ref=hl>https://www.facebook.com/finalfantasyreconstructed?ref=hl Photobucket page [with all image changes throughout the project's lifespan] http://s1381.photobucket.com/user/duke2go2/library/?sort=3&page=1 Duke ____________________ Tell my tale to those who ask. Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm very impressed with how the project is turning out. I didn't even know that the NES could do the things that I'm accomplishing with the project. I'm still having problems figuring out how to insert pictures directly into posts, so until I can figure it out, I'm going to post links to my Dropbox files for those who would rather just go right to the images. I have had a few people like my Facebook page too so far, and I really appreciate the support. I've edited approximately 9 of the total locations (all of the castles technically, although the Castle of Ordeals is giving me problems right now) and have really made some headway since I started reworking my original redesign. I hope everyone enjoys the work that I'm putting in. I feel like I'm creating the Final Fantasy game that I would have liked to play as a kid =-)
The different aspects of the different locations were all inspired by different games in the Final Fantasy series, and Grond's projects especially. I really feel like I'm making something that Grond would be happy with. I really wish we could have collaborated on this project. Once I get the sprites the way that I want them, I will tackle the musical aspects. Hope everyone enjoys. Duke ____________________ Tell my tale to those who ask. Some new screenshots of some palette edits for the Marsh Cave and for the re-worked Mirage Tower. I tried to do a more "rusty" look on the Mirage Tower because it seemed like Tiamat wouldn't have really cared about maintaining the Tower like he would the actual Sky Palace (Especially since in my version you can clearly see that its above the clouds). Constructive criticism and comments are always welcome.
I included the original edit comparisons just to show how far the project has come since I originally started editing the game. The Mirage Tower shares the sprite set with the Marsh Cave originally. I thought that I could use the Sky Palace sprites there and that would allow me to change either one or more of the locations that use the Ice Cave sprite set. I think if anything I'm going to change Thorbardin (Dwarf Cave) to look more like the Magnetic Cave in Final Fantasy IV, or turn it into a castle that goes into the rocks. Either way, I've got an entire half a sprite set that can be used for something else entirely now. ____________________ Tell my tale to those who ask. Thanks RetroRain, I really appreciate the help!
The red colors I wanted to add worked, but the blue showed showed up in the castle. It looks like blue shows up all over the place, I didn't play far enough to see other areas though. But if it looks like a hassle I think I'll leave the blue alone, thanks for looking for me. About the dialogue box speed worked like a charm, I looked at Final Fantasy++ and compared, and I also disable that annoying sound when the box opens and closes, you're a life saver, thanks RR! I played a few of Grond's FF hacks, he did great FF ROM Hacks, so I did a Google search and I found this site I like the FFPBoss "The four Fiends and Chaos" I said to myself "I have to use those in my hack" so I did some more digging and found Final Fantasy Plus. My question is, can you please tell me where the graphics of The four Fiends and Chaos are so I can rip them from FF+ to my hack? I would really appreciate it, aw man it's almost 12:30am and I gotta get up at 6:30am... ____________________ - Nikki |

I'm making this thread to let people know the status of the current hacks I'm working on, and hacks I plan on working on. Right now I'm working on Super Luigi The Forgotten Adventure my SMB1 hack it's about 50% complete, I just gotta start editing World 2-4, it's a 4 World hack.
I'm also starting to hack Kirby's Adventure, but it's an old hack called Evil Kirby which it's now titled "Gangsta Kirby" which is about 2% done, here's two screens so far and the editor I'm using is KALE...
I also redid my Duck Tales hack, putting the font into a clean ROM and added the pogo fix by Drag. Here's a pic in case no one remembers. I just gotta learn how the editor CAD works, the latest release is here...
Other games I plan to hack are... Final Fantasy 3 - This will be a Hard Type hack Darkwing Duck - Using the CAD editor Duck Tales 2 Using the Duck Tales 2 Level Editor The Flintstones - Using the CAD editor Blaster Master - Using ReMaster That's pretty much it for now, I've been wanting to hack these games for a while. See ya's... ____________________ My Linktree |
