Off Saturday, so I played Soul Calibur 3 some, and I worked Sunday. =/
Next weekend I'll hopefully be at my cousin's house, beating him at Mario Kart 64, Diddy Kong Racing, and whatever other games he wants to play ![]() |

-Just about everything in Pokémon R/B. What the fuck is with the internal orders of things? The Pokémon list is ordered seemingly at random with garbage scattered all through it! Why are some numbers hex and others (your money) binary-coded Decimal (eg 123456 = 0x123456)?
-Mario Kart 64's wastefulness. Sky colours are a pair of 16-bit (why?) RGB values. Every frame, the game reads them from memory and draws the sky. But to do this: It takes the location the sky colour table is at, does a bit of multiplying to find the first red value, and reads it. It then does the same math AGAIN to read the green and blue values, as opposed to adding 2 to the address. Finally, after reading all 12 bytes... it repeats the procedure for no reason at all! -More wastefulness: A few polygons in the game use alpha translucency. The polygon data structure has a 4-byte colour block (red, green, blue, alpha). But the alpha byte is always zero, and some completely different method is used to set the alpha. Also, there are 20 tracks in total, but track IDs are 16-bit! -Space Station: Silicon Valley. Was this game tested at all? Did they even run it once before compiling it and sending it off for manufacturing? So many bugs... There's tiny fragments of source code and developer comments in RAM too. Posted by TweakerNo, Nintendo uses the word "hack" often in their source code. Don't ask how I know this.Posted by The Kins Posted by UnsurpassedDarknessHe can, but only if Mario is small. What's up with that? |

I drew levels on paper (still do ), played with Gameshark, and screwed up SMB1 with Nesticle's graphic editor. That was my first ever ROM hack. I posted about it at GSCentral and was told of Zophar's Domain, they told me about TAN, and someone on one of those told me about Acmlm's.
Funny how a guy goes from "I changed the graphics in SMB, is this homebrew or what?" to "How the heck does Mario Kart 64 store its transparent textures and why do they appear yellow in my editor?". ![]() |

Posted by HyperHacker Thats really neat that you changed the GFX of Mario Kart 64 but are you actually going to use that as cave GFX in a hack or was this just to show that you modified the GFX? |

My mother and I used to play Mario Kart 64 all the time. She'd punch me in the shoulder like a guy when I'd break the game. Hopping walls in Wario's Stadium, Jumping off the track on the Star Road, and doing the Jungle Glitch to skip laps. ____________________

1) I'm actually Shigeru Miyamoto. That's how I was able to hack Mario Kart 64.

You'd be surprised how many "3D" graphics are really 2D snapshots of 3D models. Even Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 did this to reduce polygon count. |

I did some rearranging. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. I put the old monitor where the games were and (get this) put the games were the monitor was. Now the monitor cable reaches my computer, so I can use it and the LCD at the same time!
Quick notes:

Nintendo seems to love these akward level formats, especially when space is important. I guess it does save space defining levels in columns (Zelda 1, Super Mario Land), but how do you design like that? And don't get me started on OoT, I suspect crack was involved.
Mario Kart 64 has some interesting design choices too. The biggest ones I noticed were not using structures where they should or not putting everything into them (player stats are spread all over, a level's sky colour is not in its header but another table) and not taking advantage of padding (the polygon structure has an unused byte that would be perfect for alpha, but they use some other method instead, a few methods in fact). |

I don't know why, or if this is normal, but I tend to press insanely hard when pressing buttons.
I've gotten sore arms from having to rotate the analog stick on Dragonball Z Budokai 1/2/3/Tenkaichi/Tenkaichi 2. Not so much number 1. But from 2 on up, they make special moves insanely difficult. Sore thumbs from games that use joystick for movement such as God of War. Or even just the D-Pad on games like Gundam Battle Assault 1/2. Most of all, the SNES. SNES controllers are a pain in the ass (not literally) to me. The buttons are so awkward I end up getting sore thumbs almost every time I play. Most notable on games that move around A LOT like Maximum Carnage. Of course Mario Kart 64. The controllers were awkward for me as well and I ended up getting sore wrists from that. The Wii has to be the worst, however. From bowling/baseball/golf etc... I had shin problems for almost 3 weeks. And most of all, insanely sore shoulders/chest/upper back/lower back for the same amount of time. I mean, implementing the movement was an awesome thing to do, but I lift a LOT, and don't do as much aerobic activity as I should, so stuff like that for hours on end with no mind to stop really does a number on me. EDIT: Who would have thought so much activity/injury could come from video games? O_o ____________________ ![]() |

Posted by TheLesserBlackDope6x The game I was talking about not working was Sumotori.
Golden Sun was fun, but in no way is it better then at least about 20 games I know. (Crono Trigger, Crono Cross, Mother 3, Earthbound, Mother, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Brothers 3, Zelda: A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Super Mario World, Tales of Symphonia, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart DS, Tetris, Super Mario RPG, Kirby Super Star, Donkey Kong Country 2, Yoshi's Island...) That list would go on for a while...
(We should stay on topic now...) |

Posted by The Red SnifitPosted by TheLesserBlackDope6x Meh, It's all opinion. I mean, to ME Goldeun Sun is the best... and I guess other people can agree with me. But I guess I should have been more specific as to not try and act like a demigod. Sorry.____________________ ![]() |

I only have Mario Kart 64, because I miss it, TLoZ, for original nostalgia, and NES Wario's Woods, to see what it's like. ...I'm bored with them all. I want TLoZ: Majora's Mask out already. Now, if I had any Wii Points, I'd get Galaga, because the Arcade version is too hard for me to resist playing. Seriously. |

Gunstar Heroes, Zelda: Link to the Past, Mario Kart 64, Kirby's Adventure, Street Fighter II, and Star Fox 64. They're all basically games that I missed out on the first time around and wanted to get. I could actually buy these games for their respective consoles (except for Gunstar Heroes and Kirby's Adventure, as I never owned a Genesis, and don't own an NES anymore) but it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to just download them from VC. Not to mention some older games are a bitch to find.
Posted by AdamantPosted by Anya The MD one. VC only has NES, SNES, N64, Genesis/Megadrive, and TurboGrafx16 games (at least so far, they might add more consoles in the future). By the "real" VF2 I assume you mean the arcade one? |
