Yeah, but it was stretching it a bit more than I would've liked, so I decided to shrink it. Much better now, don't you think?

Well, the emotional factor is an important thing to consider, and comes into this discussion at all points, no matter which side you're coming from. However, I do have to somewhat dispute your points.

You are correct in that a mother will generally be more emotionally attached to her child after birth than before. However, that is to ignore what happens prior to birth, in a sense, particularly as both are largely the result of hormonal changes. Look at the effects of post-abortion-syndrome, which largely mirror what happens in an accidental miscarriage, which itself is very similar to what happens with the loss of a child in infancy. These will happen to varying degrees depending on different factors, but they're remarkably similar, so to bring emotions into play as you have is hard to prove anything.

As for sentience, perhaps it becomes a discussion of terminology. While children show certain cognitive capacities at a very young age, most recent evidence I'm aware of, and I've read a decent amount of it, would still put sentience, self-awareness in general, at approximately the age of 2. The best example of this is the "rouge test".

Well, in that case, I'll just use this rather interesting artist's rendition:

What's the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, including by how many posts the top posters got today?

I suppose if I'm going to post a bit less, maybe this isn't the kind of thing I want to be doing. Then again, this is mostly because most of my friends haven't gotten back on campus yet as of tonight.

Well, I think that the issue with the view you present there is that there's some uncertainty in the discussion about what is ideal. The ideal economic situation, at least as seen by academics, is one of moderate inequality. That is to say, what we have now is not the most efficient. And it's all because of incentives.

You're correct in stating that not everyone is spurred on by the desire to improve their lot, and many people, if not most, do just the minimum to stay at the same level. The importance of incentives, and why even a less-than-perfectly efficient system can yield as positive aggregate results as the current economy generally does, is seen in some individuals. It's not necessary that everyone act on the incentives to do better so long as a few do. Entrepreneurs are what really drive the economy's growth, so there's where the incentives need to lie, if things are to improve. So long as everyone else does enough to support it, it'll work.

The successful entrepreneurs really rake in the cash, and potential ones know this, hence their incentive to try. In a communist society, there is no extra incentive to do this (at least if we take as a given the belief that on average people are interested in their own good more than the good of the community), and so they will often not start what might be very good business opportunities. So everyone is the same, but the total level of society is lower.

The problem with the inequality as it exists now is like you said, a lack of incentives for a large group of people at the bottom. The ideal economy would give rewards to those who achieve, but perhaps not as huge ones as happen now, and would provide more support to those at the bottom. By providing incentives to those who would drive the economy, there are more resources available for those at the bottom, so long as the inequality level is kept in check. As such, all of society is better off than under greater inequality or less inequality.

I didn't even start drinking until I came to college a few years ago, but my tastes have shifted remarkably since then. At the start, I would take very large shots of hard liquor, and I really didn't much like beer at all. I think the former might have been an attempt at a "macho" kind of thing.

At some point my sophomore year, though, I started to shift in completely the opposite direction, such that shots of hard liquor weren't that great, and while I liked mixed drinks, beer was pretty much my favorite thing to drink. The problem was that unless I wanted to go out and buy it myself, the beer I had was the cheapass stuff at parties.

Well, pubs in England changed that. So much variety of beer, and a lot of it really, really good. I've decided that I like the darker stuff a lot better in general, and I enjoy a Guinness from time to time. Usually, though, I look for variety. If there's a beer I haven't had on a list of beers in a place, I'm usually more likely to get that than something I've already had. It's a lot more interesting that way.

As far as wine goes...I enjoy it, but I'm not really much of a wine taster, to be honest, so I can deal with the cheap wine, though I am able at least to tell that it's not as good. As far as cheap wine goes, your best bet, if it's available, is Charles Shaw, affectionately known as "2 Buck Chuck" since it's actually decent as far as cheap wine goes.

I agree very strongly with the two already brought up, as they are my two textbook examples of overrated movies at this point.

Napoleon Dynamite was amusing, this is true. But it was hardly hilarious, hardly brilliant, hardly anything really notable. And I really didn't like Titanic much at all.

Those are the two that I can think of off the top of my head, but there are certainly some others deserving of the dubious honor of being known as the most overrated ones. Good Will Hunting comes to mind for me.

The sky grew dark as if the world itself had been plotting against this party. The dust around the ground of the Acmlmboard Building swirled as the wind whipped up around it. The trees shuddered as a great storm came about, soaking the area and blowing around what loose bits of party were outside. The nice day had turned into a scene of chaos, as the winds increased and trees were uprooted, hurling themself as the building.

Then as suddenly as it had begun, it was over. The rain ceased, and the wind died down. The trees which had uprooted themselves fell to the ground not far from the building. The scene was covered in a mist, which was quickly broken slightly by a single flash of lightning. The bolt struck the ground with a great force, defying several laws of physics while it did so.

Out of the mist came a figure clad in a red cloak, somewhat flowing but not overly so. His long black hair rested against his back, coming from under a large equally red hat, in which was stuck a single white feather. The man wore a sly grin, and walked calmly to the entrance of the building. He quickly made it to the room where the party was taking place. Seeing the man of honor, he changed his expression to a sour one and unsheathed his sword, pointing it at the pink puffball.

Sky: Kirbynite! It is time for you to face what is coming to you!

And with that, he reached inside his cloak with his other hand and withdrew several presents, which he took to the main table and set down. He smiled.

Sky: Happy birthday, buddy.

Here's a bit on that.

I could probably find some better sites if you wanted, but that's just something that I bookmarked a few years ago.

Moreover, I'm not sure if you're familiar with post-abortion syndrome, but when that is compounded with the trauma that is always present in the case of a rape, let's just say things are made very tough on the woman.

From the z key to the shift...I'm guessing he meant the right shift, but if he didn't specify, then I think you could make the same statement.

And I really don't think it's a good idea to put your face on the scanner. Probably won't blind you or do any damage to you, but you might damage the scanner with oils from you face. Not an insult to you, just what would probably happen for most people.

If no one has written anything about Danielle's gun fetish on AcmlmWiki, I think that needs to be done. Perhaps if I get less lazy, I will do it. And I will be sure to include the particularly awesome robot image.

This does seem like something that might be good for victimized women, on the one hand, but on the other really seems like something that might be misused by vindictive women on guys who they're upset with but who aren't actually raping them. So I'm not sure how I feel about it.
