Perhaps you misunderstood. When I say cutting off the base, I mean the main support within the country, as from the government. And that has been cut off. For the past year or two the forces in Iraq have not been supported by Iraqis, but rather by Iranian forces.

I'm not saying that all democracies we set up.. fail. I'm just saying that it's basically 50/50 with that. (It failed in Vietnam, and the Weimar Republic in Germany ((a weak democracy)) fell to Hitler. Imposing democracy on a country that's not ready for democracy is very very tricky)

Vietnam was a French democracy, not an American one, that fell. Weimar is the same, actually, as the British and Americans would have preferred a different system. That was also not imposing democracy on a country not ready for it. The government was weak, yes, but the main problem there was a very shaky economy. Hitler would not have risen to power if not for the collapse of the German economy, which itself occurred largely because of the world international crisis of the time.

One thing that seems to be at odds here is who the terrorists are. Most of the people in these countries are not terrorists, and most do not actually support the government so much as fear it, and even those that support are largely doing so under the heavily antiamerican propaganda fed to them from birth. The ones being fought are a small minority who fear democracy because, well, the oppressors tend to.

I'm not really going to get into the politics of the USA PATRIOT Act and the intricacies of international law, as that could occupy a whole treatise right there. With your note about McCarthyism, one thing that I think is very important to note and is almost always looked over: he was right. The facts have vindicated McCarthy to a large extent, in that most of the people who were brought up on charges of communism were, in fact, communists, and a lot of them were actively passing information to the soviet government, as seen in recently opened to the public soviet files. Just an interesting little note that you're not usually going to hear mentioned, but is rather crucial to the story.

Truffles really are very, very excellent. They just happen to be a bit expensive for the really good ones, compared to the candy bars.

And wow, I guess the story forum's been decently active, look how high Kirb got on this!

Snow, you really do look like you're about to attack the camera in that picture. Still cute, though.

I thought of putting this in World Affairs for a bit, seeing as it deals with that, but decided that it wasn't serious enough to merit that, so here it is.

This essay is just a really hilarious look at foreign policy, quite a good read. And completely insane.

Well, it wasn't JUST the smiley conversions...though that's what the old faq would be used for by people who have been here for a while...I'm still of the opinion that the new FAQ should be where the "FAQ" link takes you, and then have a link on that page for a longer, more detailed version of it, linking to the old one or a new longer one once that's made.

Oh, I'm sure there's been Paris Hilton hentai for a while. I think the communities that make these things tend to capitalize on current events...and seeing as she seems, at least from what I can see, to be going somewhat OUT of the spotlight now (thankfully) tells me this likely comes from a while ago.

I'm mostly a fan of the Gundam side of these games, particularly as I know little about the other universes involved (other than Evangelion, which I assume is part of it), but something like this is definitely nice to see, and I may need to check it out. Always a good sign to see more mecha market penetration in the US.

One thing that always struck me as odd about those things about going back in time to kill someone was that if you did so, your future self, unless he/she knew he was supposed to do that, would have no motivation to go back in time and kill that person. Do you think that would cause the universe to end?

Sky knew he didn't have much time as Clara and Lucas could only hang on for so long, and he rushed to the wall. Placing his hand onto the immense piece of crystal, he concentrated. The magewarrior's hand glowed as the soldiers ran at him.

And then they stopped as the wall began to vibrate, and then shatter. The shards of crystal swept around Sky into the path of the oncoming soldiers, shredding the ones in the lead. The magewarrior turned around and faced the rest.

Sky: Who's next?

There weren't that many of them left; after all, this was a scout force, not a whole division, and Clara had proven surprisingly effective. Cassandra had taken a position behind Lucas, trying to avoid combat.

You miss the point. I'm not saying I need a link to the old FAQ because there's something I want to check. This is something more for newbies and the like, for whom the way they see the FAQ is hitting the link to it up top. Yes, I know the old FAQ exists, I saw your link in this thread already. My point is that it should be availabe directly from the link to the new FAQ.

Unfortunately, "life" and "intelligent life" are far different things, with far different likelihoods. There's probably no chance of finding anything more than simple bacteria anywhere 'nearby' if at all...but then, with the right conditions, under the ice of one of Jupiter's moons, as has been said in this thread already, provides some decent possiblity for something, though again, probably not going to find fish so much as waterdwelling bacteria

Nova: That would have been nice to have been useful. Especially now.

The group looked ahead to see a rather large chasm in the cave, over which there were no rails. The train of carts cleared the gap, barely, but didn't land very nicely on the other side.

The dust cleared, and Nova got up from where he had landed. Sabor seemed to have jumped out just after clearing the gap, and was fine, and the rogue hoped others hadn't been too hurt. He went to the back mine carts and moved them aside to help anyone who was underneath.

The good news was there were only a few soldiers left. The bad news was that one of these was the commander of the force, and not to be taken lightly. The man carried a polearm of sorts, and stood taller than the rest. He approached Sky.

Commander: You may have taken out most of my soldiers, but you will not deal with me so easily.

Sky: Bring it.

The elite soldier took several swings, which the magewarrior avoided. The next time, he wasn't so lucky, and caught the blow with his sword before being tossed almost to the edge of the cliff, his sword left behind. The commander approached Sky, who was getting up from the ground, and stood before him. The magewarrior's hand glowed as he fired off a small fire blast, which bounced off the commander's armor.

Commander: I've been hunting ome users for years now...do you think I would be that unprepared?

Sky: Perhaps not for more unorthodox methods.

The magewarrior rushed at the commander, who swung his weapon, but hit nothing but air as Sky dove to his side. His hand glowed as he placed it on the commander's back. Before the soldier could react, his armor had started to vibrate violently, as had the crystal wall. He let out a wail of pain as he fell to the ground, clutching his chest, as smoke seemed to spew from his armor.

The surviving soldiers, seeing this, took their leave.

Cassandra: I...suppose that takes care of that problem.

Well, not really. I actually took a course on astrobiology, and it's pretty well agreed upon that basic life could exist even in places that are nearly devoid of what we typically think of as necessary for life. It's nice to have proof of that here in our solar system, but hardly as groundbreaking as all that.

Feet just aren't attractive. They're just not, even the relatively nicer ones. I never really understood a foot fetish. But then, I suppose that could be said about a lot of things.

((Well, I don't like using ??? that much and there was no reason for him to reveal a name at the time))

The soldier lifted himself onto his hands and looked up at Clara. Through the small open part of the front of his helmet, she could see something of a smile. He spoke roughly, and with difficulty.

Commander: Heh...they must already...*cough*...have the girl if she went that way. But you'll never...never take me. And that girl...*points at Cassandra*...is already doomed.

The soldier quickly thrust his arm at Clara, hitting the side of her sword and sending her backwards, before propelling himself down off the side of the cliff.

Sky: Wait, what about---

The magewarrior ran to the side, and saw nothing below but the waves crashing against the rocks.

Cassandra: There's no way he could have survived that...but what did he mean about me?

Sky: He was strong...and if he already knew you, there may have been more to this than just a group sent for Allison. Who are you, really?!

Cassandra was taken aback, and stepped away from the magewarrior, whose face now bore a somewhat disturbing look.

Cassandra: I...I don't know what you mean, I don't know who that was, I just...I don't remember...I'm sorry...

Sky's face softened as he walked up to Cassandra and embraced her as she began to sob.

Sky: I'm sorry, it's been quite a day for everyone.

((Well, that just shows how much I know about military ranks...just think of him as the unit commander and it makes more sense, maybe?))

Sky: Warping ducts? I'm afraid I'm not familiar with those. Anyway, if we go after them, we're going to have to be very careful. I don't think any of us are exactly up to taking on a whole army, particularly if there are more high-ranking soldiers around.

Cassandra: But what do we do about--

Sky: I don't know. We'll figure out what he meant if we follow them, though, I'm guessing.

I've actually never been a fan of hershey's syrup, at least for chocolate milk. It's just not that good. And I've not had the strawberry kind. For chocolate milk, I prefer the ovaltine powder. Now that's some good stuff.
