And in the interests of getting this thread back on track, another in the line of embarassingly-bad pictures of Sky/Brian. Tonight I bring you the famous "Sky trying (and failing) to be a badass) picture", well known among oldbies. |

Cassandra: *gasp* Sky!
The girl runs down to where the magewarrior lies and helps him up. Sky: Err...thanks. Arminas, let's get out of here! That thing's not going to be following us in that condition, but if we stay around here, it could be a problem. With that, Sky went over to his reluctant companion and, with Cassandra's help, the three of them headed to the exit, a bit worse for wear. |

Nova: You know, if he hadn't kidnapped Mitra and gotten us into this mess in the first place, I would say you're being just a tad violent. As it is, I think that's fair.
Sabor came over to Nova, who had approached the dazed ex-kidnapper. The rogue scratched the sabrecat's head fur as he continued. Nova: Alright, you can show us the way, but I'm keeping you on a short leash. I'm very good at what I do, and so, I gather, is she *points to Nijote*...so if you do anything funny, it'll be the last thing you do. |

I suppose I wasn't clear. The left isn't mainstream. I wasn't claiming that it was. What I'm saying is that the media attempt to portray the left (the American left, that is...I believe you're probably right on your point that the real extreme left would be feared) AS the mainstream.
And I'm not saying that it's "left" to criticize the president. It is, however, suggestive of a bias in the way certain things are reported. For example, poverty in the US has been pretty similar for the past 15 years or so. While Bush Sr. was in office, lots of stories about it. Current president, lots of stories on it. But while the problem didn't actually get any better during the Clinton administration, the news stories evidencing the problem mysteriously disappeared. Basically, the left isn't mainstream...nor is the right, really. I think most people with brains, despite the rather polarized nation of the country, fall largely in the middle. The problem is that the mainstream media typically presents a view that the left is mainstream while the center is right. In relative terms, true, but in actuality, not so much. Another example being that when people are quoted, if it's someone from a left-leaning thinktank, it's just "...from the ____ institute" while if it's from a right-leaning one, "...from the conservative _____ foundation"...a good quote being (and I'm paraphrasing) "the only time you'll hear the words 'left wing' is in a news story about what went wrong in an airplane crash." |

Nova: In all fairness, I think the dragon's probably been slowed down quite a bit.
Just then, a jet of flame came down the tunnel they had come from. Nova: Or not. I say we take this train of mine carts down the path this guy's pointing down. I'll ride up front with him and make sure it's all good. |

Sky: I've been better. That thing hits pretty hard.
Sky lies down in the grass, not completely exhausted, but definitely feeling like a rest would be good. Cassandra walks over to Lucas. Cassandra: So what now? We rescued the girl and met up with the bandits...do we get to go to the cute cute Yoshi village now? Sky: Can we just go home? |

That actually reminds me of a story we did in the Story Forum a while ago. I suppose I should say "they" did, since I think it started after I left. Basically, it was a rough parody of Kingdom Hearts, but using video game worlds.

Agnosticism, wondering what's out there, if there's a higher power...
...oh, don't mind me, I'm just trying to make Google get the ad for "Is there a god?" to appear with reference to this page. Because after seeing the existence of this, I must wonder about that. |

The creature was still flailing, though, and knocked into Ark, sending him spiraling to the ground, his spear stuck in one of the many mouths.
Sky was quickly on his feet and backing Cassandra and Lily away from the beast. Sky: Whoa there, pal, just let the thing go. With all this life around us, and as much pain as its in, it's not going to be able to hurt us intentionally...but it's still pretty strong. Let it tire itself out. |

Sky placed his hand on the wound, and it glowed for a moment.
Sky: There was just a bit of poison there, but it ought to be fine now. I was never much for healing, but detoxifying came pretty easily to me. Can we go home now? Cassandra, meanwhile, was having a blast, swaying side to side along with the Yoshis. Cassandra: Allison, are these the cutest things you've ever seen or what? |

Nova: Cold as ice...it's not like the dragon would be able to get to us, anyway. That tunnel was too small for it to fit down. All we really needed to do was get out of that alcove so the flames wouldn't reach us.
Nova settled in for the ride, keeping a watchful eye on their 'guide'...where'd he get those pegasus seeds? Meanwhile, Sabor, sitting in the rear car with Nijote, as the front and middle carts were full, sidled up next to her. Nova: Well isn't that cute...I think he likes you. |

Orange milk? That sounds like something incredibly awful.
I've never really been that much a fan of the 3 Muskateers bar. If I had to pick a favorite candy bar, I'm not sure whether that would go to Snickers or Baby Ruth... |

I'm reminded of so many ytmnds right now.
But this one is the first I see in my search, so that's the one you get a link to. |

See, I've never really been a fan of Twix & Kit-Kat. The wafer kind of thing...it's decent, I like it, don't get me wrong, but it's certainly not up there among my top candy bar choices. I like something more substantive...which might explain my not liking 3 Muskateers quite as much.

Question for the rest of you reading the thread:
Am I the only one who saw Danielle's last post with the bold and thought that might be a link to a picture that would probably be rather inappropriate, and unthinkingly actually put the mouse over it before realizing a) that it wasn't a link and/or b) that if it was a link to what it seemed to be, it would be rather messed up for her to post it? Oh, and did that question make any sense? |

Nova: Huh. Seems I was wrong about the Dragon coming through. So Farid, do you have any idea where this track leads, or was this just a blind hunch so you have no idea if this is suddenly going to end and we're all going to die or--DUCK!
As if on cue, everyone in the train ducked their heads into the minecarts as the train passed beneath a low-hanging ledge. |

In some ways it is an old concept, and there are parallels to be drawn to the Cold War. Still, it differs largely because there, it WAS fighting against nation states. The war on terror, on the other hand, involves largely fighting against small groups within states, which aside from cutting off the base of support (successful in Iraq & Afganistan, but Iran is still supporting the groups currently fighting in Iraq) involves a lot more subtlety. Setting up democracy may be the answer in each case. Germany and Japan represent huge successes in setting up democracies; both are great, peaceful economic powers.
As for the collapse of the soviet union, that wasn't a political or ideological victory chiefly. That was important, mind you, but primarily, it broke down economically. At war actively or passively, a breakdown of the economic system heralds swift collapse of the old order. |

Sky: Originally, Allison had been held by the bandits. So we went there to rescue her. While we were rescuing her, a horde of warriors came by...crap, they may still be following us.
Cassandra: May? Are. Cassandra's face was ashen. Standing atop a nearby hill were the advance scouts for the army they had seen before. Sky: May I suggest a hasty retreat? |

Nova: So NOW can we be considered to be away from the dragon? No way he could have gotten through that one.
The carts continued to speed along, nearly coming off the rails at the speed they were going. |

Sky: Little bastard seems to have buggered off somewhere. Ah well, we don't need his help. Clara, Ark, Lucas, Lily! There are only a few of them! We take them out, and the enemy won't know where we are. First let's get them over here.
The magewarrior's hands glowed brightly for a second, and the hill the scouts were standing on seemed to collapse. The soldiers came tumbling down, but quickly got to their feet. These were no ordinary grunts. These scouts were of the elite forces, and wouldn't be taken care of so easily. |
