Well, it's a bit different for me, since my brother is rather accomplished. I have a good job awaiting for me upon graduation, but my brother went to law school and has been working...and being rather successful...as a lawyer for a couple years now. About the only leg up I have on him is something else I don't bring up. That being the History and Social Sciences Award from my high school. He really thought he deserved it his graduation year, and someone else got it. I didn't really think about it at all, and I got it. 3.5 years later he still doesn't know I got it, since I think it would bother him a lot.

Well, actually, I'm still attending Stanford. I'm in a study-abroad program that puts me over here in England, studying at Oxford, from the beginning of January until the middle of March. So I'm just a temporary semi-Oxford student. But it's quite fun.

Perhaps the best strategy I've found seems a bit counter-intuitive. I pop in an old favorite, some game that will always hold a special place in my gamer's heart, and that I've probably beaten several times over, and have another go-through. Once you do that you'll be inspired to try something different and new in the hopes that it too could be quirky in a good way and do what you want.
The risk is that sometimes all you want at that point is a clone of sorts...and I have yet to find something that captures the experience of some of my favorites. |

Originally posted by Grey ...but I'm neither gay nor violent. And a female version of me would still look like me, and even if I did think I was dead sexy, that would be creepy... Honestly, I have no idea what I would do with a clone of me. I hope the situation never arises. |

I'm not sure if lazy is the best way to describe me. More like an incorrigible procrastinator. I can definitely get my work done, and that's one of the strengths of my style of procrastination. But I wonder if it'd be better if I didn't put it off so much as I have.
What's odd is that on the job I haven't had this problem at all. Maybe because I know I can't afford to slack off? I don't know. But it does bode somewhat better for the future than how I deal with my schoolwork. |

Perhaps as I come to befriend some of you I'll share some of it. I think that at this point it would be counterproductive, as the drama itself, rather than its substance, are largely responsible for causing me to want to leave. To bring it up again would doubtlessly inspire some degree of drama to return, or at least bring about the potential for such. Best, I think, to let bygones be bygones and create a new history. Hence why I posted this initially in the Newbie forum.

Don't get too upset about it. Particularly because of two things:
1. Not everyone reveals their height; mostly the tall people do, so you get a biased sample set. 2. People lie. This is one of two things a lot of guys lie about the size of on the internet. Really, I'm sure it's not as bad as you make it out to be. |

I do find it rather odd that Atheism and Agnosticism are put as the same choice. Perhaps it is merely in my role as a religious person, and my dealings with groups as such that brings me to this feeling, but I see a huge philosophical divide. Granted, they're about the same in their practice (that is, none) from the other groups, but philosophically, it's a huge difference.
At least in what I've dealt with (Which is likely the extremes, so I'm sorry if this offends), most people I have dealt with who are 'true atheists' tend to be just as self-righteous as the most adamant fundamentalists of any religion, profoundly proclaiming how they HAVE to be right and others must be wrong. It's a sort of faith in anti-faith. And it makes some sense that they would be that way, I suppose; if you believe there's no higher power, that makes man the absolute top of the pile, and I suppose there's some justification for pride if that's correct. True agnosticism, on the other hand, is in a way the ultimate in humility. You are saying there may be something out there, there may not, but you're not really sure what it is, if anything. It is saying that man knows little in these matters and it's hard to determine what truth, if any, is out there. In between, of course, is where you get a lot of people, including many who would call themselves atheists. They think there's something out there, but not a real defined or worshipable deity...but at the same time, that man is not the ultimate power. |

I'm sure there are some general fans of Gundam series on the board, but probably not enough to really deserve multiple threads devoted to any one series. So I think this should serve as a central hub of discussion for various issues, relating to how much a particular series is great/awful and why, new developments in merchandise (models, video games, etc.) new story developments for upcoming series, and the like.
It should be fun and maybe we can get others interested in what we like so much. |

Honestly, you lot seem rather obsessed with height. So long as you're below 5'5" or so, you're not in the "REALLY SHORT" range, and unless you're going to play basketball or do some other activity in which height provides a big advantage, really, it doesn't matter all that much. Besides, shorter people (other than the really short ones) actually tend to be a bit healthier later in life, as less stress is put on their bones.

Certainly not necessary, and I have some of the same opinions of them that I do of the ratings in general. While they can be a nice feature, they are at best benign, I feel, and could potentially cause some drama as people get upset by them. Basically, cool in some cases, but not worth the potential trouble.

The man who had been sitting in the corner of the bar waited a bit after Hikari and the rest got up to leave. He didn't want it to be obvious that he was trailing them. Throwing a bit of money on the counter, he winked at Mitra and walked out of the bar...just in time to see Nijote's little stunt.
"Darlin', I think it would be rather difficult for anyone around to not notice someone leaping from the second floor of a building. So what'd you have to go and do that for?" |

Sky took this chance to place himself between Arminas and the old man, holding his hand out in front of him
"I'm not exactly sure who you are, but anyone who offers that kind of cash is probably beyond the abilities of most. That or he's just looking to start trouble. Either way, unless he really starts something, I'm not going to let anyone try to collect that reward." Sky briefly turned to Lily. "Tell me more about the Everlight...if it's just one treasure, we don't really have much incentive to work together to help you, since I'm sure you'd want to claim it for yourself." |

((Uh, Kirb, I had already transported Melvin & Co. across, but whatever, minor detail))
Sky cocks an eyebrow. "Aliens? Are you sure they were aliens? I've seen some extraterrestrials before, so I'm not doubting their existence...I've even fought some with you, but I won't press that point. Kidnapping a farmgirl hardly seems like the kind of thing they would do, though. I'm guessing they're just trying to get to you. It's probably a trap." |

I always liked making the headlines in the ACS for one reason or another. I'm surprised it's still going on. This is what, the fifth year of it?

It's rather interesting to watch such a thread develop. I was reading through a few pages and not exactly sure what the point was, only to realize that to some extent there isn't one. Sometimes it takes a little while to get one's bearings, I guess.
and 180 cm would be about 5'10, I think. I don't know, the metric system, while in some sense more sensible, has always made me a bit wary, though likely just because I grew up on the English system (which, ironically, the English don't use now). And then there was metric time, which never caught on... |

Perhaps a compromise is in order, then. Put up the old FAQ, though of course it likely requires some updates at this point, as it's practically the same as it was when I left, and have the new one there as the 'quick & dirty' version for people who don't want to go through the longer one. The short one can be the Cliff's Notes for the longer one, essentially. But the longer, more detailed, and less aggressive one certainly has some value.

Well, I was basically joking about the re-positioning of posts into that forum. Hardly my place to suggest that even if I had been serious. It was more an acknowledgement of the amusing and potentially raunchy nature of the thread, which within reason is always a good time.
As for my reasons coming back, let's just say that certain things had to change before I could come back, and they did. Kirb's partially right, too, as I did feel some obligation to the SF. And Danielle, sorry you felt neglected; if I responded personally to every person I'd probably have to post far too many times. But hello, nice to meet you as well. |

But then you get into the question of "What is color" anyway, other than the categorization of wavelengths that our brain makes. There are actually a number of color theories, not just the trichromat one, which evidence supports as correct to some extent. Most of the ones you'll get in a textbook are rather simplified forms of how the perception actually works; visual perception is perhaps the most complex part of the human anatomy, though we rather take it for granted.
What I've always wondered, however, is if the colors I'm seeing are the same as the ones you're seeing. If we see a yellow ball, we will both call it "yellow"...but perhaps the signals my brain gets perceive it as what you would class as another color, but that particular color we both have been taught it "yellow"...which could actually be some explanation not really for colorblindness, but "colorweakness" in which distinctions between colors are perceivable, but it's hard to identify what is what in some cases. |

Solution to all cat problems: get rid of cat.
While technically true, that's like saying cyanide cures cancer. Needless to say, I'm something of a dog person, though I'm not really averse to cats. Most young animals go through this rather awkward stage at some point...just worry if she starts dropping lots of teeth. |
