Sky groaned. This "Adamant" guy sure had bad timing and was far too forward about his intentions. The Red Mage looked to Seraphim briefly.

Sky: Sorry to make you feel like I thought you were just a helpless girl, but the fact is that even the strong, in fact especially the strong, can often be used for various things. As for selling it, the Black Mage knows what he's talking about on this one; you're the only one who can restore it.

One down, one to go, Sky thought.

Sky: And you, Adamant, I don't know how you got here, but the sea shrine's on the other side of the world, and look at us; we're barely equipped to walk around outside the town, let alone go over there. Things are getting worse, it's true, but it's a matter of decades, not minutes, by which that happens. It's not really any worse than it was 10 years ago.

Just as he thought he had dealt with problems and could enjoy a nice mug of ale, a strange man stepped out from behind the wall and began ranting. Sky wasn't sure whether or not to believe him, but either way, it didn't seem like there was anything they could do.

Sky: We know there's a problem, and we know the source. An investigation like that would merely delay us from our goal, and be more costly to you anyway. I think we'll just stick with our original plan...once I figure out what that plan is, anyway...

Sky glared at Adamant.

Sky: I'd say she's made it pretty clear she's not coming with you. I rather doubt what you say about the army, as Coneria's own force wouldn't stand by while that happened, and we'd likely hear, well, SOMETHING if there was another force around.

And it was then that a frantic looking man ran into the bar.

NPC#343: It's terrible! Princess Sarah has been kidnapped!

Sky grabbed the Black Mage by the top of his robes and pulled him closer, scowling.

Sky: What kind of trouble are you and your friends after?!

Aether smiled.

Aether: Please, sand?

Even the tightly-packed sand scattered into a fine mist under assault from Aether's fists and feet. That same mist settled on the ground right around the time the earth beneath Forte erupted, pushing him up in the air to be set upon by several small energy balls launched from Aether's left hand.

Aether had known the sand balls couldn't have been the real threat, which is why she had prepared her own defense before even launching her attack. No sooner had the energy balls flown from her left hand than she had turned around, bringing her right hand in front of her.

The red energy beam Forte had fired was absorbed into a magic prism of sorts, inside which it bounced around for a bit. This all happened almost instantaneously before it shot back, more concentrated, directly where it had come from, right at Forte.

Aether was amused by this techno-type approaching her. They were all the same, be they Navi's, Reploids, or just technophiles like her brother. Half-brother, really, but they were raised as full siblings. He too was always trying to replicate her attacks with his magitek equipment. Even with that, she had assured him, wouldn't allow him to do what she could do. Magic wasn't simply a fighting technique, it was something you needed to devote much of your life to in order to do it properly. Both of her parents had understood that. Strato never had, though, and while he'd been successful at copying some of her fighting moves, and even some of the magic-enhanced things their father was known for, he didn't seem to get that pure magic attacks weren't fighting techniques so much as the physical manifestation of the will of a magic adept.

And it seemed, the girl mused, that Forte didn't get it either. Might as well play along. She feigned surprise as he grabbed her arm, but only for a second before she took hold of him and swung him into the path of the polybomb that Pie had launched in her direction. She didn't really care whether the bomb exploded on him or was launched back at Pie. Either way, it wouldn't hit her, and with a pulse of energy along her skin she would either loosen Forte's grip enough to toss him away, or cause him some pretty bad pain. His choice, she figured.

The dark energy waves, as well as Forte himself, collided rather suddenly with a magic wall Aether had formed in front of her and sent in his direction, hopefully pushing him a bit further away than he was. Not long after this, she motioned for the wall to close around her opponent, hoping to magically crush him. It would only do a bit of physical damage, she realized, but should tamper with his abilities a bit.

His abilities, she realized shortly after, which tended to be executed a few too many at a time, as the latter part of Land Scraper struck, most of it stopped by the magic wall but the earth buckling around the girl. She fell into the small crater, but was up again and hopping out shortly after.

Aether: Aw c'mon, that's just tiresome.

The thing about forward charges, Aether realized as Hector approached, was that they were only a real danger to the indecisive. Other attacks required a specific course of action to avoid, but the forward charge, with an opponent rushing at you, just have so many opportunities of attack. The difficult part was deciding what, exactly, to do. The girl had seen some of Hector's moves and come to a certain realization of his style. This might be overdoing it, she thought, as he might, indeed, just be charging. But it couldn't hurt. Her, that is.

She concentrated as he approached, determining what, exactly, it was that she wanted to do, as this was a bit more complicated. Having decided, she hit the ground with force that sent out a ripple of Earth in all directions from her. It likely wouldn't do much more than trip someone up, but whether or not it did, they had a nasty surprise waiting. It was a magic tripwire of sorts, and any being who went over the ripple, jumping to avoid it or being tripped, would find themselves hit by a breath of flame from shortly on the other side. Not quite as visually impressive, Aether realized, as a true flamewall, but a lot more efficient, since a full circular flamewall would lose a lot of power and height as it went outwards.

Aether: Fucking teleporters...

Maybe it's because she had never quite mastered it, and even her dad had some trouble with it in the midst of a battle, but the girl had always been rather annoyed by those who would and could do that, seemingly at will. A cheap dodge, she'd always felt. But she smiled. His sword throw had revealed something of his plan with a decent amount of time to spare. She could have let her attack keep going and get anyone else caught in it, but Hector's little disappearing act had forced her hand.

Aether seemed to almost pull up the earth where she stood with her arm motion, and while the small earthwave kept its outward trajectory, perhaps tripping up another fighter, the firetrap spell was reversed and flowed back to the source. The girl jumped backwards from where she had stood as the flamejet spewed rather large out of the ground, engulfing Hector's downward path as it flared far stronger, due to its concentration, than it would have in the original attack.

((I should note that for moves involving twisting and the like such that my mental imager is challenged, as in this case, I make good use of the Gundam figures I have around. Evan, in this case, was represented by a Marasai))

If Evan's shades registered Sky's clothing correctly, then he would have noted the cuirass below the Red Mage garb worn by the magewarrior, which itself was reinforced, offering what Sky considered to be the best mix between defense and mobility, as the two tended to be tradeoffs even when dealing in magical goods.

If the big guy wanted to charge at him, Sky thought, he'd need to work at it. The magewarrior had a decent distance on his opponent, but keeping a good defense would necessitate not turning his back, necessarily slowing him down. Sky leapt backwards up the temple, putting a bit more force into each step, sending chunks of stone towards Evan, and hopefully breaking up the path a bit and slowing him down.

Nearing the top of the temple, though, Sky realized he was going to have to do something else as Evan continued his charge, and the magewarrior raised his shield as Evan reared back and punched forward.

Right into Sky's sword. Just as the first punch was about to land, the magewarrior dug in, brought his shield back to cover himself closely, and put his sword forward, directly into the path of the approaching fist. Sky doubted he would cleave Evan's arm in two, and he would probably get hit back pretty hard in the process, but could probably deliver one hell of a painful, and hopefully debilitating, cut to his opponent's leading hand in the process.

((Mixlaliw? Name him what you want, but I think Lixwimal or something else has more of a ring to it))

The magewarrior jumped to the side when the sand began to churn beneath him. He'd had some bad experiences with diggers, but had learned the necessary lesson to just wait it out, and backed up to harder ground until his opponent had unearthed himself, and floated in the air.

Sky: Indeed I can do more. I just wanted to make sure you were up to it is all.

The magewarrior seemed to chant a bit over his sword before charging and leaping at his opponent, to slash the air. Before the silvery being got the chance to react to being slashed at, he had a different issue at hand. The spell cast on the sword was not quite so much a direct enchantment as an affinity for water, activated at the caster's wish. In this case, Sky had decided to use it while jumping towards his opponent, who found himself buffeted from behind by the sea, pushed, the magewarrior hoped, right into the path of his slash.

((Well, in that case you may have broken the physics of the attack. If you contained any part of your life essence in the sword, then the sword would have effectively crossed the magic tripwire which extended a decent distance above the shockwave, and been hit by the attack...as for the fire, it was a pretty wide column of flame, not exactly able to be deflected by a sword unless the sword was about Exor (SMRPG) sized))

((Well, as I said, it was rather supposed to be really powerful. Basically think that if the arena were surrounded by people, every one of them would have been hit by a firewall...and this is effectively all of that put into one rather large flame column, with all of that power put into a single rather large thing, keeping a column shape rather than just a projectile fire attack))

((Well that was arguably a far worse plan, and also rather selective, as you really can't go that far back without disrupting several people's moves, and kind of screwing up the flow of the battle. Still, if you insist...))

It wasn't long before Hector realized that going underground when a ground-based attack was approaching was, indeed, a mistake. Had he taken the time to close the panel behind him, he might have avoided it, but the attack, when it came to the pit that was the elevator, at least the specific part that was to move over that. The thing about ground-based magic is that ground is a relative term in the magical world rather than an absolute floor of sorts.

As such, Hector found himself hit in the face by the dirt as the attack shifted to the lower floor, soon afterwards rising back to the surface as it reached the other side of the shaft. And just as it did, he broke the magic tripwire, and was beset by flames. Not particularly huge flames, as they would be had it been concentrated in a single flame column, but rather hot fire surrounding him for a few seconds.

Aether saw the shockwave move underground after Hector and figured he'd been hit, but would be rather disappointed if it didn't hit any other fighters, as she'd done it in the first place to get around his "copies" approach to fighting. Not wanting to be caught off guard, as she'd done some colosseum fighting herself before and knew about the underground rooms, she jumped back up into the stands to watch the fight.

Sky: Honestly, I'd rather go with this guy than go save the princess. I'm all for heroics, but I don't see how going and saving her would help us in our quest.

Just then, another townsperson came into the bar. Good timing, really.

Random NPC#572: The king said he'd give anything...within reason...to anyone who saved the princess!

Sky: Well, in that case, I suppose we COULD go help her...
