In my spare time, on and off for the past few months, I've been experimenting with creating my own forums and watered down content management system and such. Although due to lazyness, rewrites, and lack of time lately it hasn't been getting the attention I wish. Either way, I had been getting bored and experimented a bit with some javascript for the forum ordering and editing process. I mean, it just seems that most forums take an incredibly un-intuitive and simply annoying approach to forum management. If you've ever run, say, a phpBB board and had to set permissions for different forums? It drove me crazy, not that it was really that difficult or complicated, just that such a popular forum could have such a ridiculously lack-luster process. Maybe it's just me being crazy though, because the forum seems to be doing alright for itself

Anyway, this is just a little test video screen capture of what I was working on. I haven't touched in a bit of a while, but hopefully it will be coming along soon enough

screenshot video (flash file). So what do you think of the idea?

(also side-notes: What I meant at the end about ordering is the fact that the number ordering does not yet currently update, something I'll of course be fixing and adding. I was pretty much right in the middle of this particular feature when I stopped working on it, so I'm not really even done yet.

The typing sounds and the clicky circle animation thing were thrown in there by the video capture program for god knows what reason. It's a shitty trial version anyway, so if anyone has any good ideas on a replacement, please recommend

Also don't pay attention to any themes/color schemes as it's fully skinable and I haven't created the final layout yet, I'm just using the one I shat together for testing.

Bah. Time for me to be grumpy: The only thing I've done programming-wise for an Acmlmboard directly (besides making the sourcode readable) is make a small example of AJAX integration in hopes that someone would pick up on it, but nobody seemed to care, and it was just a way to try to get the message out to the target audience. I have no plans to ever let any of my code go towards bettering this forum software directly. Any of my subsequent non-commercial projects I release will most likely be under the GPL, so they would have to adopt the same licensing.

All that aside, yah, it's currently deployed in my own forum . And yah, the code should be pretty easy to port. Thanks a lot for the comments!

Go for it, it shouldn't be too hard. If you don't know how you're going to do it yet, check this out: You're going to want to look into simple javascript list dragging/ordering code for the forum order changing. There are at least 4 different of them online as far as I can recall, although unfortunatly I seem to have misplaced the links. Cross-browser alpha-transparency, trapping keyboard commands, (depending on how you want to save the changes) XMLHttpRequest. I was also planning on having the "add" function on the moderator area be one of those neat-o dynamically updating drop-down list things that some people are using for quickly searching data.

Pretty intersesting link. I especially like the articles revolving around managing website once they are up and choosing good hosting and such. I can say I have a fairly good knowledge of the web programming, however I have very little experience actually managing a website. Actually just tonight I had to set up FTP and SQL access and a subdomain for a site. I can see where people might be a tad confused.

Unfortunatly I'm actually 19 years of age. I'm turning 20 next March and I can hardly believe it. I probably have all the mental capacity and maturity of an 8 year old. Oh well.

I've seen this thread on alot of boards. I mean, it's fairly popular so far.

That's because idiots are popular too.

That doesn't mean it's not retarded. I mean, you've got posts like the last one right here, with the one word posts and generally full of things with no content.

I don't know how you expect to get help if you post the very top portion of code which makes references to functions we can't see . And I'm guessing those extra ";" are thrown in by a board parsing error and that you didn't forget to close strings on the alert and user agent checking.

Wouldn't that be an internal problem?

no.

Well if it wasn't, that alert should fire. It should work in both; it's designed to and I've used it in IE before. I tried adding alerts/document.writes just after the list is downloaded to see if they actually contained anything, but it wouldn't execute them.

just taking a wild stab at the little amount of code you provded, I say the Download function is wrong . *Wonders if this will end up like 99% of the rest of HH's programming posts with his top posts being editing 3 times with him ultimetly finding the error himself and leaving everyone clueless and not caring*

This is all I can really think of off the top of my head. And yes, this is the first time I'm going fully hardcore dork for christmas. Last year I bought a little present to myself of really geeky shit (soldering iron, eprom burner, et cetera) but this year it's all going to be nerdy. I'm turning in to a total loser.. and I love it.

The bottom items of the list are tentative... I'm not so sure if I would actually wear something so dorky in public, but who knows. I'm definetly going to pick up the top two items though, those are pretty much must have and fairly cheap. Maybe I'll get myself a bottle of vodka or something. I don't booze much anymore, but I know I'm going to go looking for a stiff drink when the holidays come around.

I liked it.

I am a bit conflicted in calling it a 'very good' movie since I have read the books and it just irks me the amount of stuff cut out.

I do realize that time is a issue but nonethless I like details. The movie was more fast paced a few things were omitted because of time or they hold no real significance at the moment.

Oh, as for Neville and the whole dancing thing.

Stupid. As. Hell.

Unless I am mistaken they haven't shown Ron's older brothers, Bill and Charlie yet.

Oh, and the amount of time we saw Sirius amounted to the exact time the couch in the common room got.

I definetly agree. I just saw this last night at the AMC Chicago in the Loop. While I have always enjoyed the movie renditions of the books and they still serve as a nice alternative medium for complimenting the series, in this 4th movie the plot seemed way too rushed. Like they could only allot 5-8 minutes per event, then hurry on to the next and rarely revisiting past events and tying things together, and when they did it seemed in a cheap manner. I understand that there are is only so much time for each movie, but it just didn't feel like it flowed very well?

It might be something else that I can't put my finger on, but it just didn't seem to dliver as much.

And yes. Stupid. As. Hell. @ Neville, Dancing, and various shenanigans.

All complaints aside, I'm definetly glad I saw the movie and will certainly watch it again. This is one of my guilty pleasure, and having read all books so far, I just can't wait to see the next few movies

I was bored and stoned one day and I drew on this hat lying around the house.

I later filled out the shittier looking areas to make them not suck an flow more, added some more random shit, and also filled in where it says "ROBOTS" to blockier more cartoonish letters. The drawing kind of sucked, but I later realized it's the only hat I own. So I wear it out.

Previously I had been doing website design sporadically.. after "unfortunate events" on my last project (like, quitting) I recently got a partner to help manage more of the business side of things and with that pressure relieved it's 10 times more fun and a much smoother and professional process. We're currently working on two projects (one for a non-profit organization and another for a private business) and have a few more lined up, so I'm not entirely sure how long I'll be employed, but we're going to try to keep it going as long as we can.

The best part? Not wearing any pants when going to work (my computer next to my bed).. although sometimes I wear ties (it's a clip-on )

Check the first comment on this page. It makes a reference to ImageMagick. So apparently it is possible, but not with the default PHP library set.

although like you said "hackish", I would consider that better than the initial "impossible" assesment, especially considering it's transparent to the user (right?). Although I'm not sure what you were saying about not working on windows systems (never tried it before). Did you mean server-side or client-side?

Going along those lines, I would recommend forgoing any additional libraries and looking into a javascript solution (creating mulitple GIF's and manipulating how and when they are shown with javascript and zIndex + display CSS properties or something.. just off the top of my head) if you are really dying to make this work. Although from what it sounds like so far nothing you work with is going to be a "really great" solution... *shrugs*

by nature I tend to design things that validate and degrade accordingly, however on this specific project I have been torn. Frankly how many users actually disable javascript? And is there a time when I can sacrifice a small portion of the userbase for, in my opinion, a feature or component that will set the software apart from others like it? I was pondering this when creating the replying method. I feel that this board's method, which is used by virtually every other board in existance, just plain sucks. I was thinking about implimenting some spiffy AJAX-ian approach, but momentarily stayed my hand. I still haven't decided... but I'm leaning towards extending the middle finger to the javascript disabling, tin-foil hat wearing maniacs out there (luckily or unfortunatly for them, however you see it..)

Posted on 11-24-05 09:23 PM, in Linux Laptop and a broken screen... Link
A bit ago I pulled my brother's old laptop (Dell inspiron 2600) out of oblivion and decided to install Ubuntu on it. He left it at home when he went into the service and unfortunatly, right smack in the center, the screen had a medium sized tear.. well, that crack has grown to an unbearable size which makes doing anything on the laptop virtually impossible. I'm able to tool around with things, but I have to keep adjusting the window locations, something that I get frustrated and angry just thining about. So instead of paying money to fix the screen (perpetually broke) I figured I would just use an extra monitor.

The problem is that I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I have always been interested in Linux but I haven't taken much time to really fool around with it beyond getting my computer to support my wireless internet device. I'm the newbiest of newbs, even with Ubuntu.

So my question to those more experienced would be how do I get Ubuntu to recognize this extra monitor I'm hooking into the laptop instead of the default lcd screen?
