I've got a hack I've been working on for a very long time now (probably a little over a year), complete up to Fallarbor Town. No patches or betas are available yet (as there are still some bothersome but not gameplay interfering glitches I'm trying to fix), but I've got loads of screenshots and would love some feedback

Storyline:
The Short: A game based very very loosely on plots and characters from my fanfics; features the pokemon world's version of PETA, some mad scientests, anthropomorphic pokemon, and some new pokemon species made just for the game

The Long: You play as either Buster or Suzie, and you've just moved to Somers Point, New Jersey (which looks an awful lot like Littleroot ). The plot is mostly the same as the original Ruby. The scatterbrained Professor Sycamore, after being attacked by a non native Poochyena, gives you the baby pokemon you used to rescue him (Magby and Smochum if you want the game to be easier, Pichu if you want a challenge) and also a Pokedex, so you can track all the species in New Jersey and make sure the native populations are not threatened by the wild escapees of an abandoned safari park, Jungle Habitat (based on a real New Jersey event, though the real Jungle Habitat is situated in North Jersey, the game is set in South Jersey). Right from the beginning, you hear things about Northfield's new Gym Leader, a "crazy lady" named Mary with a major passion - working with the pokemon world's PETA, PETA-PT, on winning basic rights for the anthropomorphic slavepeoples. Heading to Northfield, you soon discover she has an especially ambitious morph, who's got the crazy idea of trying to be a Trainer. You help said morph, Kate the pikachu, catch a Ralts, and with just that simple event, yoru character suddenly starts finding themselves all mixed up in the mess between PETA-PT and the scientests who profit making and selling the morphic slavepeoples. While the scientests take the role of the Magmas, that doesn't mean PETA-PT is all good, as I try to show in the game. Both sides have their unsavory characters, and their good people Your character just does what is asked of them, and never does pick a side. You'll see all the details of this mad plot, and the little jokes and interactions between the characters, when it's finally finished, or if there's enough of a demand for a beta patch

Features: Because the game is set in New Jersey, most of the land is urbanized. Almost all routes are paved - if you want to look for wild pokemon, you have to slip through "gaps in the guardrails" and search for them. There are about 20 pokemon species created for the game - from the near legendary Pocoora (a flying squirrel) to the humble Chiorn (a bird with a little corn sprout on its head). Some of these are new evolutions - Plusle and Minun can evolve into the cute Sciurrel (same name for both, but different stats and color schemes) and a Ponyta with max Beauty can have an alternate evolution - into the winged Fluttiby. Some item prices have been changed, most notably in the case of Rare Candy - they are worth far more, because they are buyable, and it woudln't be fair if you could just buy tons of them and level up like mad There are no items to be picked up off the ground, except for hidden ones (due more to a bothersome glitch than a personal choice, but it does add to the difficulty ) All species are catchable, except for those who were replaced to make room for the 20 new species (namely ones I don't picture really being suitable for the Jersey climate or area of the world and aren't available in the Jungle Habitat area). This is mostly a plot/texual and sprite hack - so don't expect the towns or house insides to look all that radically different. There are a few changes here and there, but for the most part, they look the same. Key character battle and overworld sprites are different, with the exception of your player sprite - I'm just not good enough at sprite hacking to make the sprites of them running and on the bikes looking at all good (I tried, but failed miserably.) The vast majority of pokemon battle sprites have been replaced with revamps from previous generations, Fire Red/Leaf Green/Emerald sprites, or, in the case of Flareon, fully drawn by me. Human and new pokemon species battle sprites are modified versions of existing pokemon and human battle sprites, some painfully obviously so, and others less. I'm not a great sprite artist, but I tried, and that's all I can say

Glitches: There are a few glitches, though they don't really hamper gameplay. The into text is screwed up, with the result that parts of it are the original text and some of it is different (I've tried more times than I can count to remedy this), but only the very beginning of the game is effected like this. Two NPCs dont' respond if you talk to them. Item balls don't work, and I can't deleate them, with the result that I've just put them in inaccessable areas and made the items buyable. Occasionally (and thank god this happens very very occasionally), a pokemon will have a bizarre moveset and nothing I can do will fix it, with the result that in its place, that trainer must have a Smeargle. The Fiery Path doesn't work at all, with the result that I simply made no way for you go inside and you simply go around, rather than through.

Here are some screenshots. I've got a lot. Enjoy!

This one shows the generic television text. I hope at least one person gets the joke

Pichu sprite based on a Silver revamp. I think it's cute

Generic highway shot.

Pooroo, one of the created pokemon species. It evolves from Pweek and evolves into Pocoora.

Meeting Mary.

Helping Kate the anthropomorphic pikachu.

Screenshot showing off the "dune grass"

Scientest grunts. Recolored FR/LG sprite, basically

Flareon sprite.

Marina's overworld sprite.

Captain Morgan shows off how drunk he is.

Sampson in the Coastal Pit.

Thomas's overworld sprite.

Scientest coat color variations.

Tyler's sprite.

Parker's sprite.

Silly NPC dialogue

Newscasters Erin and Chad. Look close at their truck and you'll see the Action News 6 logo so well known to those in the South Jersey area.

Any praise? Flames? Constructive crit? Let me know what's good and bad, and if anybody's actually interested in a beta.

I can't believe I did that >.< (mispelled a key word, that is). It's what I get for typing fast and not proofreading.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice I'll work on fixing up the overworld sprites so they look a bit better, and I'll redraw Pooroo's foot I'll try going back and adding more changes to the towns as well, because I don't want the game to look half-ass ; It may only be my first hack ever, but I really do want it to look its best I'm glad you think the revamps look good, and I'll work on improving the Flareon I drew (it's not a revamp) so the shading looks better I was hoping for constructive critisim, and I'm glad I got some, so I know what to do to make it look the best it can Thank you all!

I'll work on getting more screenshots in the meantime.

Yeah, basically, I've left a lot of building insides the same for the time being, as I want to go through and change most of the text and sprites first ; I plan to go back and change more overworld things later, however, so don't worry

I'm still new to hacking myself, but even from my perspective there's still a lot of work that could be done here. All the dialogue is exactly the same - it's no different from playing Gold or SIlver, except that your only option for a starter is a pikachu. The altered overworld looks a little crude, especially the floor in Gold's room and the fact there's two staircases in it, one which leads nowhere. In Elm's lab as well, when Gold automatically walks towards Elm, you've put an Aide right in front of the path, with the result that Gold will walk right through the other sprite and stand on top of it as the Elm dialogue begins. More experienced hackers can give you more constructive advice, but I hope this helped.

I think there's a German program that lets you do this, called DSRS.
