I recieved the beta from Interdpth, and my thoughts are thus:

Very...freaking...spiffy.

Summed up in three words, anyway. The saving feature is yet to be fully installed and there's a lot to be done in making a hack. Some features, such as the door editing, map editing and things that are more in-depth (invisible walls, events) are not available yet but I'm sure he's working on them. Right now (I'm on IM with him now) he says foreground editing is next.

Here's a screen:

And the foreground works! THE CROWD GOES WILD!

...eh, enough of that. Nice though. JEEEESUS, you have a lot running on your computer all at once. Like mentioned, it seems to be fairly straightfoward - click the box that pertains to what you're editing, right?

This absolutely rocks...I would love to help you out with this, although I don't know what. Designing Metroid-esque levels are my specialty, however, so if you ever need some new levels...

Also, if I could ask you a favor: given the fact that I don't really know anything about ripping or so, would it be possible if I used the ripped graphics from your hack? Not much, mainly just red brinstar, two of the maridia tilesets (the deep ocean one and the purple ruins/sandy one) and the lower norfair one. I'll put your name in my credits and everything, mention your hack and the website if you have one. I understand if you don't want to, me being all pathetically stupid when it comes to in-depth hacking, but I thought I'd ask.

Sweet. I like the graphics, especially those in the castle, and the world selection idea is very cool. The only problem I have with that is that means every level is just as easy or just as hard, unless there's a pattern to doing the levels that isn't necessarily in chronological order, and the player has to figure it out. That'd rock, it'd be like Megaman where you have to figure out which Maverick or robot is weaker to the power of the other.

The overworld, to be brutally honest, sucks. It's a bit too usual. Just kinda spiff it up a bit (yes, spiff is a verb). Add some indescriminate islands that you never have to visit (unless secret levels are in order!) and there you have it.

[slips back into reality] Bleh, stupid life.

Hahaha, sick work, Interdpth. Absolutely beautiful, this is looking godly. I wish I could help, but honestly I know nothing about in-depth hacking, except for a bit of hexidecimal here and there (mainly messing with the level names and midway locations in Yoshi's Island)...so I guess I'll just show my support and stuff.

( )

Very much looking forward to this, let me know if you want something tested or if I can be of service.

Okay, so...I have this really sick idea. What if someone made a Mario game styled like a Metroid game? The entire thing would be one level, using every level accessible in Lunar Magic, beginning at the surface and ending in a showdown with Bowser.

Obvious problem with this: lots has to be changed, and it can't be done with conventional hacking, a.k.a. I do not know what the deuce I'm doing.

What I'd like to do is this:

You travel through one level, doors, teleport blocks and pipes connecting you to different "levels" (which would be the "rooms" in Metroid). You get certain things (such as a Switch Palace or defeating a boss) and are able to go to new areas. Power-ups act differently.

Worlds I have so far:
Surface world, Eastern ruins, cavern, jungle brinstar-like area, flooded cavern, jungle ruins, water world, lava world, western high-tech fortress, lava ruins, bowser's castle.

Seperations:
Fire Mario, Feather Mario, (Laser Mario), 4 Switch Palaces, Renzor, Big Boo, 7 Koopa Kids, On/Off switch, locked doors

**MAJOR PROBLEMS**
1. Saving. Needless to say, if you die, you don't want to have to start all over again or only have there be one mid-way point.
2. How to work this - I'd need to find a way to teleport you somewhere after defeating a boss or hitting a switch palace so it doesn't end the level.
3. Custom blocks - defeating a certain boss makes a kind of block passable.
4. I want water to act like Metroid water, fixed by a block or item you find.
5. Power-ups - much differently. Let's say you get the fire flower - from then on you can become fire Mario at any time. But maybe there's a limited amount of fireballs and you can increase the amount using expansions...
6. A health bar? That'd be cool. Also increasable.
7. New power-up - Laser Mario! Reflectable off mirrors, opens certain blocks, stuff like that.

So, that's my idea. If impossible, so be it...I'd really like help on this and would be interested in a multi-person hack, especially since I know jack squat about in-depth hacking, such as ASM and things like that.

Thanks for everything!

Well, that's what custom blocks are going to be used for. Like, you won't be able to access some areas until you hit the Switch Palaces, or until you beat one of the nine bosses in the game...discovery isn't a problem, really.

You'd need to dump most of the Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission graphics, plus probably make some of your own for areas that haven't been featured in a Metroid game.

For the Laser Mario idea, I suggest contacting KPhoenix. He just created a Laser Suit power-up for Mario.

For just plain moving around, you'll probably have to hack the physics of the game a little. You can either go for the "floaty" feel in SM and MF or you can choose the more natural drop in MZM. Also, you'll need to change it for sure if you plan on adding a Hi-Jump item of sorts.

I'm definitely interested in this and if you decided to go with it and make this a team effort, I'd be happy to help. Metroid is my favorite series and I've always wanted to create a Metroid game in some way.

Super Metroid graphics primarily, it's by far my favorite Metroid game as far as graphics go. I might steal some Chozodia/Space Pirate Mothership graphics from MZM, and then a little bit from Fusion. Maybe a Night world like the one in Fusion would be cool...or a frozen world. Hmm...there are seven Koopa Kids, after all...*plots deviously*...

As far as falling goes, I'd also base it off SM and Fusion. That's how I like it...and a Hi-Jump item was thought of, but I dunno yet.

I'd be really happy with your help, is there a particular time you can talk about this on like IM or something, or should I just PM you?

Hmm...it's an idea...I think I might go with the teleporter-map idea. It definetely solves my saving problem. Now, the new problem that's arisen is events and stuff - let's say I want to reveal, from the Jungle level, not only the flooded cavern, but the water world, the fortress, jungle ruins and others eventually...last I checked, each level only had 2 exits.

And the memory thing is stressing, yeah, didn't think of that O-o

KPhoenix - yeah, I actually just "came back" to the board after a little while of my life killing me, and just realized you made that...that'd be pretty sweet if I could use it.

Haha, sweetness. Looks amazingy awesome, I'm gonna have to play this eventually...recently got back into YI hacking myself...(has random swings of it)

ANYWAY...time for in-depth reviewing:

1. Oh, the fire traps. God, do I hate those things.
2. Awww, man...I was gonna do lava-Salvo. *shoots idea*
3. Yikes. Spikes and bricks and egg blocks...good thing that block's there.
4. I loved cloud levels in the original YI...this one looks fun
5. GAH! GHOSTS! *runs* Anyway...I like the coloring of the bricks, actually...
6. Everyone loves the occasional simple level. Spiffyness.
7. Okay, that screenshot looks freakin' awesome. Really awesome. The mist, the fireball, the cave coloring...spiffay.
8. Damnit, a puzzle. Well, that's what YI mainly is, isn't it? I actually love puzzle levels...so...this one will be fun, it seems.
9. *laughs at shy-guys* Anyway...yay for penguins! Bwahahaha!
10. Ah, the snow effect. One of the higher ones on YI that made you curse and go "#$^& I can't see a DAMN THING"
11. Sweet, chomp rocks! Another puzzle level, it seems.
12. DAMNIT, I HAD A LEVEL CALLED THE QUARRY *shoots that idea too* Okay...fire shy guys! RUN!
13. Woah, looks difficult. How do you get that key?
14. I...hate...monkeys. I'm sure you do, too. The true job of any programmer is to piss their players off.
15. No, just...no. That looks...ebil. So evil, it's misspelled.
16. DEMON FLOWER! *pulls out shotgun*
17. Well, I did have an idea for an underground city but it wasn't called "Koopalopolis" so...looks neat though. Sewer levels looked to be a BITCH in Eggvine.
18. Like I said...sewer levels...evil.
19. That one's pretty freakin' cool. It's just cool. 'Nuff said.
20. Okay, Yoshi! Go find the keys! (Yoshi: I HATE YOU ALL)
21. Yay! Kamek shows up! Took him long enough, sloth.
22. Hahaha...looks like a fun level.
23. Oh...dear. That level name makes me cry.
24. *cries*
25. .
26. Hey, that's neat. Pretty awesome.
27. Seen it, but still cool.
28. FBI SHY-GUYS?! OH CRAP!
29. Woah. Looks like the guy from the 7-up commercials.

There you go. Have fun, good luck with world 6, watch for updates on YIR.

It's an idea. Right now, it's just that. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm gonna do or even if I can, before I start making levels left and right. I need to learn higher-level hacking or enlist people who do, and this is as much as a signing-on thread as an idea thread.

I'd love to get this off the ground, I just need a pair of wings. Or a jet engine, or something.

Bleh, I can't seem to get water right. No matter what I do (or how many times I look at previously made levels) I keep messing up. Here's screenshots of what it looks like in ZSNES and Eggvine.

The screenshots show it. Yoshi is at the surface of the water, even though visibly the surface is above him. He's floating near the top, but not at the top.

Wow, that's actually pretty cool. I truly admire your level design - puzzling and never-boring, which is all I aim for. I'm looking forward to playing this one, the number of good SMW hacks these days are...scarce, to say the least.

I'd like to test it, I guess...but...dear gods...fix the pallettes, damn it No offense, but my eyes just commited hara-kiri. Go with flowy colors and beautiful ones (note Metroid is well known for its' design) instead of...whatever that is.

Level design looks good though.

And like Drewseph said, don't make it harder. Make it easier. It will end up being harder, but if you try to make it harder yourself, it will end up being a nightmare.

Hey, that's pretty cool, actually. I tried making a hack once where I switched out Super Mario World's Mario for a Sephiroth sprite

Although I'm sorry to say I know very little about NES hacking with an editor much less in-depth hacking like you're talking about. The idea's cool though - only problem I see is that it still says "M" next to the lives, but that's easily taken care of. Just my OCD making me notice things
