yeah i think that would only work until
a) you edit and re-save the level or b) you lock your hack (i guess because doing this re-saves every level) edit: i was just thinking - would it be possible to find the offsets for where levels you want to use are located after a hack is locked, then go back in with a hex editor and change the offsets from the default ones to your own levels without running any risk of editing the levels again? this seems logical unless there's another reason the changed offsets get messed up when you lock a hack. if this would work though it should work for ghost house and castle entrances too, i think. edit2: nevermind, that definitely wont work. locking a hack changes a lot more than i thought it did. you need to click "write rgb values to rom" or something like that in the palette editor.. just only edit the worldmap related ones though or it'll change colors that you probably dont want changed

speaking of the mist. how does the game decide whether or not to make it transparent?

i actually like picture one (the overworld)... it looks weird and kinda cool
picture 2 - booring... if you wanted to sum up how fun your hack with 3 screenshots, this shouldn't be one of the three about picture 3 - that's awful. why is a bullet bill section just like that in almost every unnecessarily difficult hack. it's no fun at all considering bullet bills shoot randomly so they're almost impossible to avoid when there are that many generators. |

you're right, there is no point to go on because the trailer isn't just a flimstrip with some text--it's actual moving video!! and 13 MB is not a monstrocity at all - it's farily reasonable for the clip's length. i'm assuming you've never dealt with digital video.
anyway, FPI it looks pretty well made (the video and the hack.) also i'm very glad you didn't use some awful song by your favorite band or something as the background music for the trailer. |

i'd vote for one that would involve completely original levels if i knew which ones would. since i'm not sure i decided to vote yoshi's island. it would be hard not to make original levels if you hacked that.

there's obviously no easy solution to this problem, and i cant offer any real help.
but i want to make a comment/suggestion that no one wants to read that many messages in a level anyway so i wouldn't worry about it unless it's an absolute necessity |

i use m16-7k to rip backgrounds - and some objects
it's fast since you dont have to manually change colors in the palette (although you made need to rearrange it) and you dont need to piece together the 8x8 tiles into the 16x16 ones you need if you're new to ripping stuff though it takes awhile to get used to, and there are no really good tutorials on it out there as far as i know. maybe i'll make one sometime |

i cant believe someone was complaining about this thread. it's not like anything more interesting ever gets posted here anymore. just awful hacks made in less than a week, dumb questions, lame arguments, and threads that get closed for one reason or another
the article's stupid and the idea it suggests is awful, but at least it was a fun read. edit: and it does pertain directly to smw hacking (edited by wtfweb on 05-28-06 12:47 AM) (edited by wtfweb on 05-28-06 12:47 AM) |

do you really need to follow the rules so strictly in every case?
this thread isn't hurting anyone or the communitiy and it's a hell of a lot more interesting than most recent threads WITH screenshots. anyway that list is a little unbelievable but he does sound competent enough to have actually pulled those things off. i can see no good reason this thread should be closed, possibly discouraging him from working on/finishing what could be a fun hack. |

sometimes graphics from nonmario games feel weird when you're playing a mario game
but originality is good |

couldn't you just move the mario sprite to the level you want to test in the overworld editor?

i just entered random values
01,02,03,04,...0A,0B,0C,0D,0E,0F,10,...etc each one gives you a different sound effect. i wouldn't be surprised if there's a list out there with values and descriptions of each but here are the ones that were the most interesting (imo): 05 - 1up noise 11 - drumroll 15 - dont remember but i wrote down that i liked it 53 - boss death 54 - yoshi spitting sound (my personal favorite) 55 - distant thunder (?) 5E - another one i dont remember but liked |

i think we should just (be allowed to) taunt stupid people for being stupid...
as harshly as possible someone makes a stupid topic? it gets laughed at andr its creator gets personally insulted for being a bad poster that way people will realize that there's a certain expectation for posting but on the other hand, if someone is just asking a simple question, there's no reason not to answer them and be nice about it. dont close topics just because the question they ask is answered in some FAQ somewhere (edited by wtfweb on 06-24-06 02:13 AM) (edited by wtfweb on 06-24-06 02:14 AM) |

god who cares about those tiny details!
all that matters to me is if the hack is fun or not. which i really cant tell from an overworld shot |

why dont we just split the smw hacking board into 2 forums?
one for questions and general hacking discussion and one for hack announcements and screenshots *edit* also to prevent accidental spamming of the hack announcements forum maybe someone can figure out how to set it so that you can't start a thread without including at least 2 picture attachments in your post.
