this rules. these people took super mario bros 1 and twisted it into a 15-minute movie.

i'm not sure whether they programmed it from scratch and copied the graphics table or just programmed over the original code, but it rules. i think it'd be interesting for more people to do stuff like this. i don't suppose it's in the tradition of rom hacking for the sake of making a new game, but it goes to show that there's more that you can do within the limitations of nes hardware.

there's a link to the source code somewhere in that link, but you can just download the movie (in .nes format, to be played on an emulator) here.

IT'S OUT OF CONTROL!!!!!!

The concept is cool ...but it's very disappointing...i stopped watching after the first couple of minutes.

no way! the music is the best part! it helps to fast forward through some parts because a few of the scenes drag on, but once you get to the middle it's a total mindjob, in a good way.

wow. that's a relatively enormous tshirt.

and for everyone's information, emo did basically become indie rock. hey scenesters? (gong) but either way, havoks, she's fake cause she was adopted by rich white people. doesn't even confuse l's and r's!!!

yeah, so...hi everyone who greeted me. it's so weird to try and connect old names with people, since i never actually "knew" anyone here. it's like some kind of social experiment.

so i'm going to be featured in this art exhibition of university of pennsylvania fine arts-related people. it's opening friday and the reception is from 6:30 to 9 pm, in case any of you are in the philadelphia area and want to see what's in it. the gallery address is 2015 walnut street.

anyway. it will feature some stencil things i've been working on, including spraypaint on the walls and silkscreening. here are the shirts i made for it. you'll recognize the middle design as my icon.

the fun part is guessing what each shirt means.

hah. they played at my school last year with cat power for spring fling. i didn't go because i find sonic youth kind of boring.

other noteworthy bands: pavement, dismemberment plan, and built to spill

also, i could have sworn grunge as a genre was dead. or maybe it was merely supposed to die!

End of story.

uhhhh, what?

as far as selling out goes, for many people/bands/whatever, the prospect of getting a big paycheck in return for catering to a certain audience is tempting, and it definitely has a tradition of corrupting the music.

promotion and distribution depend a lot on the label wants to do with a band, and that depends on what the band produces for its label, the pushiness of the label, etc, etc. imagine if you were a big record company. you're going to push what you think will sell, and you're going to try to push bands to produce what will sell, and offer them greater promotion to persuade them. it's all kind of complicated.

but anyway, deerhoof totally ruled when they were a art-rock noise band. i saw them the other week and they were kind of a let down. you'd think they'd spaz out on stage, but the closest they came to that was for their 4-foot-tall asian singer to bounce up an down (which was the only time you could even see her).

university of pennsylvania. it was a total flop for turnout because most people were either like "i don't know who sonic youth are" or "i don't really want to see sonic youth." actually, financially it was pretty good because they didn't need such a large venue and i guess sonic youth and cat power don't cost too much to have play. yikes.

i'm pretty sure this year's spring fling will be the furthest thing from indie rock, though, since last year turned out to be a giant mistake.

i'd hardly consider a bunch of tshirts nsfw. it's not like they actually show anything, and they're very clearly stylized anyway.

well, it just so happens that i am selling them. (i guess i'm taking pre-orders...i don't really have the money to keep a stock of shirts) the things on the right are bears, but that's not so easy to tell from the picture. and that's no vagina on the left. it's a lemon.

and (not to be completely late with this) upenn has its own digital media design program (which i'm in) that is similar in content to computer science, but has more of a focus on graphical things. it gears people toward jobs in 3d animation and the game industry, mainly.

as far as putting romhacking on one's resume, i think the general idea is that companies would prefer to hire someone who takes initiative and can potentially self-teach. romhacking tends to require both of those things. the reason why someone without formal education might be chosen over someone with it isn't because formal education is bad, but rather that just because you have a degree doesn't mean you went out of your way to learn something new or explore a personal interest.

between four and six 40s of steel reserve? i don't think i could even live through that.

a friend of mine claims to have had eight 40s (st ides i think) in one night. of course the only way he was able to keep it down was by doing plenty of coke also.

i love the smell of christmas in the air, although i have too much work to do it more than once a week. it's also good for my head to not constantly be in a fog.

i like smoking halfway through movies, because it completely changes things. the other week my roommate and i were watching evil dead with our girlfriends. as the fake gore got more and more extreme and absurd, the movie became that much funnier.

it's also pretty entertaining to get confusingly stoned late at night and browse the internet, especially this place.
