Posted on 12-24-05 11:27 AM, in Your Music Folder Link
On my Mac, I have my music in the default iTunes Location -- Music / iTunes Music.

In this folder there are 435 subfolders, totalling 8.29Gb of music.

On the fileserver we have a larger share of Music, but I cannot tell you how much that is right now, I can't be arsed investigating the fileserver and it's supposed to be in synch with both my machine and my housemate's machine and probably isn't and therefore wildly inaccurate...

iTunes reports "fileserver" as having 1784 songs, totalling 8.27Gb of music.
iTunes reports my local machine as having 1794 songs, totalling 8.24Gb

Additionally, my brother has 50 songs shared via his machine, totalling 284.3Mb. His taste in music is evil also.

Well, wait, I wouldn't bitch about that because it means some hardcore legal action. i.e. suing.

This is just stupid.

It's quite funny but then I guess more so to people who have been following the story till now, with Microsoft trying to develop their own icon.

Gavin's already explained it better than I could earlier in this thread.

The whole "development" was really quite funny; and it's also funny that IE went with lololol's icon in the end. It's also mildly amusing to see Microsoft adopt something from the open-source world, as they don't often do so... even if it is just an icon.

Posted on 12-27-05 08:50 AM, in Pirated anime and fansubs discussion Link
Well, there are things I like about DVD media, and things I like about the ability to get fansubs...

One thing I used to like about DVD media is that I had the option of watching in Japanese or English; although this has changed a lot recently with a lot of things being available in dual audio and subtitled verisons. I always watch in Japanese with English Subtitles anyways. I also used to like the fact that I physically owned something and I really would prefer to BUY anime than pirate or download fansubs.

However, fansubs have some real advantages over DVD media for me. One, I can download some and see if I like it before I go and buy it -- there isn't anywhere around where we can just rent anime around here, so if you want it you have to either torrent it or buy it -- and if you don't like it and you bought it, then you're stuck with it. At least I can then make an informed choice before marching off to buy a boxed set or whatever.

Also there's the fact that DVD media is actually physical media which is becoming a disadvantage for me. I have all these boxes and DVD's every-bloody-where. They are a mess!! But if I torrent or rip my DVD's, I have them all in one handy-dandy Hard Drive. I haven't had much luck with ripping DVD content myself; but if I could I'd do what I do with my music -- buy a CD; rip it, and then tuck the CD away in my box of CD's which is more or less shoved into a corner out of the way.

Generally I want what's convenient for me. Sometimes I will go and buy a DVD boxed set cause that's what I want, sometimes I'd prefer to have it on my computer taking up hard drive space instead of shelf, floor, desk and etc space.

Because I'm so good at making a mess and losing things unless it's on my hard drive, I think I really prefer fansubbed media. I will admit it is easier to loan out my DVD's to friends though

By the way, any anime un-aired in the U.S. is legal to download.

IANAL, but that doesn't sound right to me. I believe there is a grey area surrounding unlicenced anime (as opposed to "un-aired"), and this is the area semi-legally covered by fansubs. The idea is that when somebody picks up a licence for an anime, the fansubbers have to stop subbing and distributing that particular anime.

At least, that's my understanding of it.

I'd be surprised if people do care about this.

I dunno, but it seems to me like a lot of things have changed since the days of Nixon and a lot of people don't seem to care anymore -- or worse, say everything's "okay" cause it was done to "fight terrorism" or something.

Personally I'd like to see Bush held to account for this. But I don't hold my breath for it happening either.

Posted on 12-27-05 07:15 PM, in New Years Resolutions Link
Well, it's nearly that time of year again.

Do any of you guys have any New Years Resolutions for this coming year? If so, what are they? Did you have resolutions last year, and how did you go with them?

My New Years Resolutions are to lose weight (again) and to fix up my finances.

My resolution at the end of last year was to lose weight also, and I lost 13kg (28.6lbs) this year. I intend to lose as much again in this coming year.

I had no resolution concerning finances at the beginning of this year; but due to circumstances this year it's now a priority to resolve (or at least make manageable) my problems in the coming year.

What are your goals / resolutions for the New Year?

How many here like to cook?

I'm a very underconfident cook, but I'm getting better. I can make a whole lot more stuff than I used to be able to now, but generally I need a basic recipe to get started with a lot of things. Once I'm comfortable with a recipe, I can make modifications to it and such.

When I start a new recipe, I like to use proper measurements and such too; but once I'm comfortable with it I don't anymore And I add new stuff to it and such too

I used to burn everything; or otherwise ruin it (lumpy sauces; oversteamed vegetables, undercooked pasta and rice, etc). I'm getting better at that now and I can cook more and more complex things too.

What I can't do is improvisational cooking. I can't just make a meal up on the fly out of things I have in the house.

I also don't like having people tell me what to do when I'm cooking. Usually when I start cooking I have already in my mind what it is I'm trying to do; and I want to try to work through it. I really dislike it when somebody will stick their nose in and tell me I'm doing it wrong -- and this usually results in me getting all funny over it and killing the food through nervousness

Do you like cooking? Can you cook improvisationally, or do you need recipes and guidelines?

Good luck.

You will need to practice parallel parking. I don't know if the test is different where you are, but in Australia it was an item on the test.

Ask your folks to help you practice.

In Australia we have a body called the Telecommuncations Industry Ombudsman (TIO) that you can complain to if your service provider / telephone company / etc isn't honoring their contract / overcharging / etc.

The TIO will investigate your claims and can fine the company if they're doing the wrong thing.

I have had overchargings refunded because of this. The company "mysteriously" found that I *had* cancelled my service and that they should repay me the money they'd been taking from my credit card... but only after I took it up with the TIO.

I'm sure there's such a body for US stuff; so see if that helps.

My pancakes are also somewhat odd shaped. I can never quite get the flipper underneath it properly and then when I try to flip it... well.. Yeah. Creatively-shaped pancakes and omelettes

Meh, I made a resolution to lose weight last year, and didn't even start until April or June So New Years itself isn't really making me change

It's just a good time to reflect upon the past year and then set goals for the next one. Goals which I'll probably start mid year again when I finally get the motivation to do things.

No wonder AOL would never touch Austraila

AOL are in Australia, they call themselves "Australia Online" and most people avoid them. I don't know if they've given up on the Australian market yet or not actually, but I used to be stuck with AOL once, and it was evil.

As for the comment about the company not being able to slap you with a cancellation fee -- if they think they can get away with it, they will. And if you refuse to pay it, they will chase you with debt collectors.

For chrissake, if they're giving you this much grief, contact whatever your equivalent is to the TIO -- or whatever your equivalent is to Consumer Affairs. There WILL be groups / bodies that prevent companies from abusing their clients in that way.
