I agree that there is a bit of idiocy about, but I've seen some very intelligent stuff too.

The board's what you make it. Sure, it can never be what it was in the past, cause it's uh... well... in the past... but if you have the right attitude, now can be cool too

And we do try to squish the idiots where possible

The Citadel had a ToS laid out and it was specifically to do with what you could and couldn't do on the board. This was seperate from the FAQ, and laid out specific rules about what could and couldn't be done -- ie posting of pornography, flaming, trolling, etc.

Course, that's all lost by now I'm sure, but it was a good thing to have. Users had to agree to the TOS before registering also, thanks to some code from Kasumi.

And when users did the wrong thing (and then kicked up a stink over it) I could point at the TOS and say "well, you agreed not to post a bunch of porn... and you did... so bye"

Thing is, I don't think postcount alone is the cause of our problems. Oh sure, it might encourage some people to spam, but I don't think that removing it will be some magical panacea or anything.

I don't actually believe the problem is in any way to do with the coded features of the board, nor do I believe that coding additional features into the board, blowing it up, etc, is going to make any difference.

The problem is a social problem, not a technological one.

And my desk is now about the cleanest it's been in... a very long time. We threw out a LOT of old stuff.

Fiiine.... here's all the stuff on my desk at the moment. Bear in mind that it's a large desk, so this actually does NOT constitute "clutter" in even the remotest sense

Starting to my left, heading furthest right:

My handbag
My ID card / HID keycard
Three folder-organisers, which contain 2 binders, 1 plastic envelope, a small book with an elephant on it, a name badge, and a retractable ID holder
My telephone
My wireless headset, in its charger-cradle
My iPod
My iPod holder
A tall glass of water
A black biro
A document holder with my current "to-do" list on it
A Pinky: ST doll, which I have customised to be wearing predominantly black, green and brown.
My monitor, which has 6 soft puppy toys on top of it
My computer
My keyboard -- Microsoft Natural Keyboard
A gel wrist rest to stop my wrists getting sore
My new mousie... Logitech G5 -- on top of a mouse mat which also has a gel wrist rest
Another folder-organiser, with a clipboard full of scrap paper in it
Document trays with tissues, a "stress die", compact disks, Smart Mass Thinking Putty and a bowl of "berrychocs" in them.
A pencil holder with miscellaneous junk in it... pens, pencils, scissors, erasers, chapstick
A small desk fan for in summer.


My little cupboardy thing is more fun, so are my drawers. Mostly consisting of things to eat. Like Caffeinated mints. I have coffee in there that I think I shall have to give away as I know that it's no longer up to my "standards" and so I won't drink it. The hot chocolate I'll drink though if I remember to buy some milk.

It's both. One causes the other, both ways. I don't disagree with you on the social aspect, otherwise this wouldn't be a problem. However, the tech aspect is helping cause the social aspect.

Basically, the bad people are bad people. The postcounts and other freebie stats make the shit worse.


If it REALLY is both, why is it that some forums with same or similar features don't have the same problems??

I would argue that the problem is far more a social problem than a technological one at least. I think that the technology is scapegoated a lot... and it's a lot easier to change the technology than it is to change things like a social culture.

I haven't played one of those since I was a kid. I used to have a family friend who used to buy them for me on birthdays and such.

lol... I wish I had answers for all of that, and yeah, some places do attract idiots for some reason. I really wish I knew why, but it's got me stumped.

Is it perhaps subject / interest related? Or rather, the way that certain subjects or interests are presented here??
