Depends. If there's other stuff to do, I can stay away from this thing for a long time When my internet was down for well over a month, I read books instead. When I bought other books (and the internet was up) I still stayed away for a long time.

At the moment I'm without other distractions so I spend a while on the computer. My computer also doubles as my TV and HTPC though as well, blurring the line a bit between what are "computer" activities and what I could do in my loungeroom instead. I don't consider a day watching .avi's of Scrubs in fullscreen, on my bed, to have been "computer time".

*shrugs*

Well, I wasn't going to mention that. Don't want to give anybody ideas.

Plenty of people have done it in the past and got off scotch-free.

This I certainly don't deny either. Still, it's not a good suggestion to put out there, is it? I certainly don't wish to be in a forum swimming with spam just so people can get Custom Titles and whatnot.

I would like to think that staff would ban such people fairly swiftly too.

Their music's fun. Nothing I'd generally go out of my way to listen to most of the time, but for a fun occasion, it'd be good stuff. Very upbeat, silly lyrics, etc. Just one of those fun groups that certainly don't take themselves very seriously.

Couldn't work out what you're talking about, but it seems this Axe stuff is called Lynx here in Australia.

And I don't like them.

I'm looking for dinner ideas, so I'm wondering what you guys have been eating lately. When I plan meals lately, I seem to keep winding up in a continuous loop of the same kind of stuff, over and over.

So, I thought I'd ask you guys what you've been cooking and eating lately. And if it's something that you cooked yourself, a little bit of information about how you did so, so that I can try it if it sounds like something I'll like.

Yesterday, I had spaghetti bolognese.

My recipe for it's never the same each time (at least as far as quantities go... it's usually the same stuff), and it's probably not "traditional" bolognese, but it's simple enough and it works for me.

I cook some chopped up onions and garlic in a big frypan with a little bit of olive oil, then brown some mince. Then when the mince is brown, I add some chopped, skinless tomatoes, some tomato paste, basil, oregano, thyme, some finely grated carrot and smoosh it all together so it's all mixed through. I usually add a bunch of cracked black pepper too.

I also add a whole bunch of red wine, then I let it simmer till the carrot more or less disappears and such (not long), and all the flavors have gotten through the dish. Oh and somewhere in there I cook pasta too. And then I put the sauce on the pasta and put fresh parmesan on top

Tonight I'm trying to make chinese style chicken and sweetcorn soup, and a chinese style bean curd and mushroom stirfry. I've never made either before so I'm worried I'll mess up, but I think it should be good.

What have you guys had lately? Tell us about it

I'm starting to wonder if it's better off even for the non-technical to learn some basic HTML, afterall, most of these pre-fab type things put out websitest that just aren't very nice looking most of the time. =(

I work on a Help Desk and I deal with the non-technical on a full-time basis. Unfortunately, I'd say that there are a vast majority of the non-technical that would not be able to even begin to get their heads around it.

If they want to learn, sure, but most don't want to / aren't able to, and that's why I tend to accept these site builder things and other general WYSIWYG tools.

Personally, I prefer it more if a guy wears a low(or no)-scent deoderant to do the actual... deoderising, and then wears an eau de cologne for the fragrance.

I guess cause these Axe/Lynx things are all over the place, and they ALL smell kinda cheap to me.

I just had the best sleep I've had in months and months.

I bought a new bed, and it's awesome. No springs digging into me, no weird hard lumpy bits or funny soft bits (I'm guessing the absence of pokey springs), etc, etc. So wonderfully comfortable, I slept so well.

I actually feel awake today

What have you had recently that's been awesome?

Posted on 05-07-06 12:24 AM, in New Disclaimer for the Internet Link
I discovered this by way of Slashdot. It's a disclaimer for the internet...

WARNING
Business is unpredictable and unsafe. The Internet is dangerous. Many blogs have been written about these dangers, and there's no way we can list them all here. Read the blogs.

The Internet is covered in slippery slopes with loose, slippery and unpredictable footing. The RIAA can make matters worse. Patent trolls are everywhere. You may fall, be spammed or suffer a DOS attack. There are hidden viruses and worms. You could break your computer. There is wild code, which may be vicious, poisonous or carriers of dread malware. These include viruses and worms. E-mail can be poisonous as well. We don't do anything to protect you from any of this. We do not inspect, supervise or maintain the Internet, blogsphere, ISP’s or other features, natural or otherwise.

Real dangers are present even on the Web. E-commerce is not the mall. It can be, and is, steep, slippery and dangerous. Web features made or enhanced by humans, such as firewalls and spam filters (if any) can break, collapse, or otherwise fail catastrophically at any time. We don't promise to inspect, supervise or maintain them in any way. They may be negligently constructed or repaired. The web is unsafe, period. Live with it or stay away.

Stay on trusted sites whenever possible. The terrain, in addition to being dangerous, is surprisingly complex. You may get lost. Carry food, water and an APU at all times.

Ads for things you don’t want and other objectionable content can arrive from nowhere. This can happen naturally, or be caused by people around you that are being used as bots. Spam and disgusting images of all sizes, including huge images, can arrive, or pop-up with no warning. Use of spam filters is advised for anyone approaching the Internet. They can be purchased or rented from us. They won't save you if you get hit by something big or on a port you left open. A whole DOS attack might collapse on you and squash you like a bug. Don't think it can't happen.

Public opinion can be dangerous, regardless of the forecast. Be prepared with extra damage control, including press releases. Ticking off the blogsphere can kill you. The Streisand effect can turn a simple nastygram into a deathtrap.

If you make hasty comments about those in high places (making unsupported comments that reduce the image of a person, often posted quickly and without thinking) without proper thought and, or allow your employees to do so, you are making a terrible mistake. Even if you know what you're doing, lots of things can go wrong and you may be sued for libel. It happens all the time.

We do not provide rangers or security personnel. The other people on the web, including other visitors, our employees, agents, and guests, and anyone else who might sneak in, may be stupid, reckless, or otherwise dangerous. They may be mentally ill, criminally insane, drunk, using illegal drugs and/or armed with deadly malware and ready to use them. We aren't necessarily going to do anything about it. We refuse to take responsibility.

If you surf at work, you may become pre-occupied with it. This is true whether you are experienced or not, trained or not, equipped or not, though training and equipment may help. It's a fact, surfing at work is extremely dangerous. If you don't like it, surf at home. You really shouldn't be doing it anyway. We do not provide supervision or instruction. We are not responsible for, and do not track how much time you surf at work (although we could if we wanted to.) As far as we know, your employer may find out and send you plunging to unemployment. There are countless tons of loose management staff ready to be dislodged and fall on you or someone else. There are any number of extremely and unusually dangerous conditions existing on and around the Web, and elsewhere on the Internet. We may or may not know about any specific hazard, but even if we do, don't expect us to try to warn you. You're on your own.

Rescue services are not provided by us, and may not be available quickly or at all. Local computer geeks may not be equipped for or trained in hard drive recovery. If you are lucky enough to have somebody try to get rid of a virus or find that deleted file, they may be incompetent or worse. This includes your local computer store. We assume no responsibility. Also, if you decide to participate in a rescue of some other unfortunate, that's your choice. Don't do it unless you are willing to assume all risks.

By entering our site, you are agreeing that we owe you no duty of care or any other duty. We promise you nothing. We do not and will not even try to keep the premises safe for any purpose. The premises are not safe for any purpose. This is no joke. We won't even try to warn you about any dangerous or hazardous condition, whether we know about it or not. If we do decide to warn you about something, that doesn't mean we will try to warn you about anything else. If we do make an effort to fix an unsafe condition, we may not try to correct any others, and we may make matters worse! We and our employees or agents may do things that are unwise and dangerous. Sorry, we're not responsible. We may give you bad advice. Don't listen to us. In short, ENTER AND USE THIS SITE AT YOUR OWN RISK. And have fun!

lol, I love it.

Go internet.

I can't think of anything they're missing... maybe idiots... not sure.

EDIT: full version. Now not sure if they're missing anything at all...

Ah... yeah, moving is a depressing experience.... I moved earlier this year. Just make sure you plan everything out really well so it's not too stressful and you should be fine And label all your boxes with a COMPLETE inventory of what's in them (or as close to complete as possible) so you can find all your shit again. Good luck with it all.

I've discovered since that it's a parody of a REAL disclaimer for Nelson Rocks.

And Slashdot wrote a Linux one that I thought was cute:

Installing Linux is complex and difficult. Distros are halfbaked and unpredictable. Many books have been written about these dangers, and there's no way we can list them all here. Read the books.

The install process is covered in steep learning curves, slippery catches and unstable automated functions. Having a non-standard set of hardware will make matters worse. Mindbogling jargon is everywhere. You may fail, crash or otherwise fail catastrophically at any time. You could break your multi-boot partitions. There are hidden rules and things to know. Carry install disks, backups and a spare windows machine at all times.

Asking for help won't work. The wild linux-know-it-all snobs are ready to bounce at your pitiful requests for explanations, with vicious, poisonous comments about newbies and reading the man pages. We don't do anything to protect you from any of this. By using a free open source operating system, you are agreeing that we owe you no hint of advice or any other care. We promise you nothing. We do not and will not even try to keep the premises safe for any purpose. This is no joke.

We won't even try to warn you about any dangerous or hazardous condition, specially if we know about it. We may or may not make an effort to fix an unsafe condition, and we may make matters worse! Sorry, we're not responsible. We may give you bad advice just for fun. So don't listen to us. In short, ENTER AND USE LINUX AT YOUR OWN RISK. And have fun!

SWpil[l[injg water onj your l[aptop isw l[ikel[y to do FAR more damage thanj swpil[l[injg it onj a swtanjdal[onje keyboard.

Inj facdt, it DOESW do far more damage. Thisw hasw onjl[y damaged swome keyboard injternjal[sw -- I'vge sweenj fried l[aptop motherboardsw due to swpil[l[age. Winjdowsw wasw njot happy.

Anjd yup... keyboard swtil[l[ brokenj today, al[though swome cdharacdtersw havge improvged. nj njow isw onjl[y nj, njot 7nj anjymore....

Spilling water on your laptop is likely to do FAR more damage than spiling it on a standalone keyboard.

In fact, it DOES do far more damage. This has only damaged some keyboard internals -- I've seen fried laptop motherboards due to spillage. Windows was not happy.

And yup... keyboard still broken today, although some characters have improved. n now is only "nj", not "7nj" anjymore.... anjd my spacebar is back to normal!

I know it shouldn't fix itself overnight. But it's remarkable that some keys work fine some of the time.

Hey....wtf... that sentence worked. And so did this one.

Okay, that should theoretically be impossible. What the hell is going on? It shouldn't be able to just fix itself like that.... crazy computer.

I haven't rebooted, but it appears to have come good now?

Mostly. Oh well, I think I'm still getting a new keyboard tonight anyways. And a switch! Seeing as I realised last night just before bed that I have a fully-functional laptop too.... just no network connection for it.

This is odd, this keyboard wasn't working all of five minutes ago.

(now at work with fully functional keyboard)

Yes, I could have immediately unplugged my keyboard, but out of a general dislike for that clicky piece of Microsoft annoyance, I left it to die.

Excuse to get myself a non-clicky Logitech ergonomic keyboard, or even a less clicky Microsoft one.

The keyboard's not done bad for being around the last five or so years and all the abuse I've hurled in its general direction
