lololol. On all my home PC's and even though it's non-standard, on my work PC too.

Been using it since it was called Firebird... but then I've never been an IE person, I've always used alternate browsers -- Netscape, Opera, Mozilla.... I just.. don't like IE.

Yeah, it's been on SBS so I used to be able to catch an episode every now and then, now it's on the comedy channel so I get to see it more

Funny series. Very wrong.

I love Ling Ling as well I also find Princess Clara to be hilarious, but then anything that takes the piss outta Disney Princesses wins in my book.

Okay, you want my critique?

Things I don't like
* The materia is too large... I was being cartoony when the rest of the pic doesn't truly warrant this
* The hair should be higher, and the materia lower
* The hair on the top of the head goes too far to the right of the picture giving the head a weird shape.
* The ear lacks detail
* The eye on the right was leaning, and my fix (by adding more ink) did not quite resolve this
* Shading on hair ribbon too dark considering it's supposed to be the same shade as her dress
* Arms are thicker than I'd like them to be
* Collar on the jacket is too stiff looking
* Right arm -- outside line of arm does not line up behind jacket
* I think I shaded under the bottom lip a touch too much
* Her bangs ARE parted off center.

Things I do like
* I like the detail in the eye shading. Ballpoint pen is pretty unforgiving so it's nice when the finer details work.
* I like the shading in her dress. I think I've done a good job showing the fabrics -- the jacket looks heavy, the dress looks soft and light.
* Tonal work in general is pretty good.
* I like the shape of the arms, despite them being a little thicker than I'd like
* I think I've done a good job of subtly suggesting cleavage without actually explictly drawing it

Kyouji Craw -- "ugly as hell" is not a valid critique. I don't mind negative criticism, but for pete's sake make it constructive!!!

Below is a good example of a critique:

The main problems seem to be with centering and balance.

-You drew her in a partially completed contrapposto pose, as indicated by the tilt of her hips. Balance dictates that the shoulders will *always* fall on a tilt opposite to the hips, so her shoulders should be falling along an upper-right to lower-left axis (the breasts are kind of falling along that axis already). Google "contrapposto" to see some examples, if I'm not coming off too clearly.

-The body midline is not consistant and is most noticable where the dress seem is. It should be shifted on a curve more towards her left side, almost along the edge of her form, but it keeps coming over to her right. This is making her form look flat instead of 3D.

-It looks like she's mashing her head back against her neck because the entire head is not situated far enough to her left side. You can tell this from the neck line, which would be closer to the middle of her chin in 3/4 view.

-The midline of the face should pass through the center of the bangs, nose, and mouth on an outward curve, but all three are out of alignment. Again, the midline would be shifted farther to her left side, almost to the edge of her facial form.

-Skull is deformed, portruding WAY too far on her left and not enough on her right. The hair really gives this away because it should be taut against the skull when it's pulled into a ponytail. The ponytail would also be shifted farther to her right in accordance to 3/4 view.

-Arms too thick in proportion to torso, lower arm especially thick in proportion to upper arm.

-Hairline too low on forehead.

I think the pen technique is turning out quite nicely, though. The curls in the hair are especially pretty and I feel like I could reach out and tug on them and they'd spring back into place.

Not really... all you're really saying is "I don't like it".

It doesn't help me at all to improve though, as you've not pointed out anything specific, or what specifically you find wrong with it. "Proportion" to what, where? Arms to torso? Chest to shoulders? Head to body? Eyes to face?

Some of those proportion things are a stylistic decision, others are mistakes. (the size of the eyes is a stylistic decision, the proportion of arms to torso is a mistake)

Read Six's critique (the one I blockquoted). Six is another artist; and she has given me a very good critique -- she has told me very precisely what she's seen wrong, like "the hairline is too low on forehead". I know know that in future I need to move it higher (although admittedly I'd moved it so low because in past critiques I'd been told it was too high on the forehead... I need to find somewhere in the middle and get it right)

max, Xkeeper, Yoronosuku and Danielle were all also able to point out something specific; and although they weren't all able to be as specific as Six, I'll still be able to work out how to fix things for next time from that.

"It's ugly" doesn't help me one bit.

I'll never be able to fix the original, but here are some corrections based off feedback... I don't know if I fixed the face thing, but I moved the mouth down lower...

Major fixes include the shoulders, arms, neck and top of the head. Original underlaid so you can see where new linework differs from old linework

Proportion as in some things are far larger or smaller than they would be on an actual human. The eyes, for example. I don't like that. In my opinion, there is no beauty whatsoever to the style you've chosen.

Also, that posture is going to give her horrible back problems later in life

Ah, so you just don't like my art style. Well, you can kiss my curvy behind, because that's the way I draw and I'm not changing for the likes of you Big eyes are more or less a staple of my art style, it's not often I'll draw anything that doesn't have big eyes.

As for general body proportion -- well, anime is FAR from realism -- it's loosely based on real anatomy, but generally quite exaggerated and caricatured. Comparing anime anatomy to real anatomy is like comparing Barbie Dolls to real anatomy.

Meh, and that posture is called "contrapposto" although it's incomplete -- and completed in the blueline fix sketch. It probably might mess up her back in the original sketch, but in the second should be a natural relaxed balanced stance.

But that's it, I don't want to do realism.

I love cartoons. I've always loved cartoons, and anime. I love cartoon art. Ever since I was a little kid, I was facinated by cartoons and comics, and I wanted to do cartoon art. No, not even that, I wanted to be a cartoon.

Realism doesn't excite me. It doesn't get me fired up, I have no passion for it. I can't do something that I have no passion for, my heart just isn't in it.

What I AM passionate about is cartoons, so that's what I do.

What I don't do well -- and what I know to be my major artistic failing -- is express myself well through the cartoons. Other people are exceptionally good at doing this, but it's something I have immense difficulty in doing. The pictures in my head that actually say something about me and emote are apparently impossible to get out of my head and onto paper / screen.

Everything else in the meantime is practice. Practice drawing arms better. Practice shading in a different style. Practice drawing a contrapposto pose. Practice and constant refinement of linework, until the day when I can actually properly express myself through my chosen artistic style.

Until then, I'd appreciate actual constructive criticism on my linework, shading, etc, to help me to actually get to the point where I can trust my artistic style to express what I want or need to express.

Apologies for the less-than-dead-serious response....

But when I hear the word "jihad" I am reminded of one of two things -- the New Zealand rock band "Shihad" who was required to change their name to "Pacifier" in order to try to break into the US market as the name Shihad was too offensive....

... and cheesy American Action Flicks where some highly stereotypical terrorist group declares "jihad" against the US (ie, True Lies and the Crimson Jihad group in there) and then Arnold Schwarzenegger saves the day by blowing a bunch of things up.

I don't have any real serious thoughts about the word "jihad" though otherwise. I don't think the media or Australian culture has exactly provided me with a great deal of good information or unbiased information so that I can form any real serious thoughts about it either.

...thus rock bands and hollywood action flicks....

As Allah would will it.

Well, we all know Allah's a rocker and he loves Arnie

Which reminds me, there is a third thing that comes to mind when the word "jihad" is mentioned -- and that's sensationalist, really overdramatic media coverage / fearmongering.

But let's face it, rock music and hollywood action flicks are MUCH more fun.

See, that's another thing... what if I don't have the talent to emote anymore? I haven't been able to for years... in fact, pretty much since I was diagnosed with clinical depression, my ability to express... anything... in my art has just... evaporated. I've gotten more technically competent, but more emotionally dead...
