Yep. I've known about this for a while.

Truth be told, it doesn't really affect me all that much. I don't have to support any of those operating systems in my work (which is the only place it would worry me) and at home, I'm perfectly capable of administering and managing my Windows 98SE old-games computer without Microsoft's help, patches, etc. It never gets connected to the internet anyways.

It will probably have a bigger impact in places with low budgets who have not been able to upgrade their machines still...

Well, I use Azureus, but one of the things that seems to mess up a whole lot of stuff is NAT problems.

In Azureus, you can tell you have one of those cause the little NAT "LED" at the bottom of the app is either yellow or red all the time. Green is good.

I'd assume there's something similar in uTorrent too....

Yes, ports are important too. I use 49500.

It's also important to set up some good connection settings. These will vary depending on your speed. ie, say your upload is 512... you might want a global max upload speed of around 50, maybe 5 upload slots per torrent, max. number of connections around 120 per torrent, and about 200 globally...

Important to remember to set up any port forwarding on your router!

As a kid, I got the "tomboy" label, but as I've grown, I tend to be regarded more a a nerdygirl.

This is probably fairly fair, as I'm... well... nerdy.

Course, I'm also pretty girly. Not in the "fussing over makeup" way... (I wear very little makeup, if I even wear it)... but I think the fact that I want to casemod my iBook so the little glowing Apple logo is pink just about sums it all up

Posted on 04-19-06 10:48 AM, in Wolf Creek Link
Well, I just came back from my Mother's house for a lovely roast lamb dinner, red wine, a pavlova, and... well... this isn't usually my mother's cup of tea.... a horror flick.

We watched Wolf Creek.

Now, for those of you who are unfamiliar, Wolf Creek is an Australian film, released 2005, and is "based on true events". Which true events, it's not made clear, as it seems to borrow a bit from the Peter Falconio event, the backpacker murders of serial killer Ivan Milat, and touches of the Snowtown "Bodies in the Barrels" case... but still... it says it's "based on true events" and it very well could be.

The premise of the story sets you in outback Western Australia, where a group of travellers (two British girls, one Aussie boy) are travelling across to Cairns from Broome. On their way, they stop to see the Wolf Creek (in reality spelt "Wolfe Creek") Crater for some sightseeing. When they return however, their car won't start.....

The movie has been fairly built up here lately (particularly fairly recently) thanks to some interviews with John Jarratt (the bad guy, and local TV personality on Better Homes and Gardens... yes... you heard me.. he does housey stuff when he's not being evil), and the film has gotten a reputation as one that a lot of people walk out on because they cannot stomach it.

So, I was wondering -- for those of you who have seen it -- what did you think of this South Aussie flick?

I found it interesting. It's a very... uncomfortable film to watch. I don't think I'm gonna look at John Jarratt the same way for a little while

We tend to get a fair bit of British Comedy on the ABC here; although I can't say I watch as much of it as I used to.

I used to love Red Dwarf when I was in High School, and out of High School, I used to enjoy Black Books.

I watched Coupling a bit last year when it was on, very silly. And I watched Little Britain this year, although that's never really appealed to me that much.

However, this reminds me, I need to find a clip from a very recent episode of The Chaser's War on Everything (Aussie Comedy). I enjoyed their take on British Sketch Comedy

Keeping Up Appearances IS irritating, but sometimes it's good for a laugh. Yes, Mrs Bucket (prounounced "Bucket" not "Bouquet" as she insists) is annoying, but that's part of the fun.

I forgot about things like Mr Bean and Blackadder too I used to love Mr Bean as a kid

And as for Are You Being Served.... I vaguely remember watching that when I was a kid. Some of the humor I got as a kid, but a lot of it went sailing merrily over my head.

Yup. We often discuss series and stuff here, but I'm curious about what Directors, composers, etc, etc, you guys like in the world of Anime.

At the moment, I enjoy a lot of work by Shinichiro Watanabe. He's most famous as the director and writer of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo as well as two of the Animatrix shorts, (A Detective Story and Kid's Story). I find his work interesting because of the way he mixes up different genres, and the interesting way he marries musical styles to things (ie, Jazz and Blues to Science Fiction; Hip-Hop to Samurai-period anime)

My favorite studio however, is Studio Ghibli, which I adore for.... well... lots of things. All of the movies by them that I have seen (so far) I have enjoyed; and I love slowly building my collection of Ghibli films. I like the works of both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. I can't think of a favorite film, although the very poignant Grave of the Fireflies is up there.

I also like Gainax, particularly FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion

As for composers, this is much harder. One of my favorite composers isn't actually an anime composer so much; he did the music for Silent Hill (Akira Yamaoka). As far as anime goes, I don't mind Yoko Kanno but really it's very hard for me to pick a favorite composer....

And with manga artists... I do like CLAMP. Cause they draws pretty bishies

I'm sure there's plenty more, but I think I'm done for now

What about you guys?

Posted on 04-20-06 03:55 AM, in Christianity, abortion, and the idea of punishment for sex Link
I do agree at least with the idea of there being "punishment for sex" when it comes to females.

Not so much in a religious or childbirth sense, (although that may factor into it) but rather in the way that women who have sex are still percieved.

There is still a double-standard when it comes to lovemaking. Men who have sex often are usually praised for it. It's considered a good thing if I guy gets to have sex often, and a lot of people still consider it a good thing if a guy gets to have sex with many women. They get called a "stud", and more or less cheered on.

However, when a woman has sex, they are often frowned upon. Sometimes they may be called a slut (particularly if they have sex with a number of partners). When they get pregnant, many assume it's the Woman's fault (as if there were no male counterpart there doing the dirty with her), and believe that she deserves to have her life ruined (if she's unable to take care of a baby) because of it. However, those same people seem to believe it unthinkable that the male counterpart should be expected to suffer for his pleasure....

If a man gives a woman an STD, she's a dirty slut. If a woman gives a man an STD, it's still because she's a dirty slut. Regardless of what lovely disease he's carrying, it's still somehow her fault.

I don't know if this sexism / double standard is because of religious reasons, or what, but personally I find it appalling.

And yes, I know it's not everyone, but I'm still alarmed at the prevalance of this kind of thinking in a time when there is supposedly "equality". It's pretty disappointing, and hurtful when you're a girl just trying to make their way through the world.

Hell, even if a woman is RAPED, it's still because she's apparently a "dirty slut". And no, I'm not over-reacting when I say that. I've been raped before, and I've had law enforcement "professionals" (read: police) point their fingers at me and call me one, straight up. It was my fault, cause I'm the slutty dirty woman, and nothing I said to the contrary really mattered.... it's almost like they had to protect the man from the evil, dirty filthy slutty woman.

Yes, losing weight slowly is much better than losing it quickly. There's the instant gratification thing with losing it fast; but it tends not to stay off as easily of you do that

Slow and steady is the way to go

As for chocolate, it's not all bad, but you do have to be careful with it I tend to buy little itty bitty bits of it, but make sure it's REALLY good stuff (so, one truffle from a boutique chocolatier), and only do it every now and then. I have a little bit once a week as a treat for being good the rest of the time. Besides, at $80 a kg, I can't really afford much more anyways.

Oh, I'm also now notorious at work for sitting there with one piece of chocolate melting in my mouth going "mmmmmm" and pulling weird faces The other chocolate-lovers at work get it, but every one else looks at me like I'm doing something perverse and/or crazy. Hey, it's my one piece of chocolate, I'm going to REALLY enjoy it

But they have no hope of a romance with me, they will be forever doomed to the "friends zone". To really get me interested a girl has to be feminine, i cant stress that enough. Men are repulsive to me, so why would i want a girl pretending to be a guy?

I think you misunderstand tomboys, if you think they're "a girl pretending to be a guy".

I don't think it's a decision in that sense with girls that are tomboys / geeks. And I know I'm certainly not trying to be a guy!

I've just never considered videogaming to be a masculine activity, or playing sport, or computers.... they were things I grew up doing. As a grown up, I don't consider fixing my car (a term I use very loosely in my case) to be a "masculine" thing to do, it's just me trying to get by and keep it running. I don't consider any of the "handyman" things I do to be an effort to be masculine either... it's just being a single woman, if it breaks, who ELSE is going to fix it?

There might be some girls trying to be boys, but most tomboys are girls that are just being themselves.

Hmm.... you seem to have a dislike of the more extreme tomboys then. Like with everything, there are varying degrees. And people go through phases too, so sometimes they might be more "tomboyish" than others.

I have my moments. Sometimes I obsess over home decoration. Sometimes I obsess over my lack of an R33 Skyline to hoon about in. Sometimes I obsess over getting my cooking right, sometimes I obsess over RAID-5'ing my hard drives. Sometimes I dress in jeans and a tshirt and sit around drinking beer and belching, sometimes I dress in a flowery sundress and stand around at parties sipping champagne and not belching.

I'd like to know what is defined as the "social expectations normally placed on a female" as well then.

I'd guess with things like Barbie Dolls and Bratz Dolls that are given to female children, one of the social expectations of girls is that they pay a high amount of attention to, and devote a large amount of time to, hair, makeup and clothes. And there are definitely a lot of women that do when they grow up; there's a massive, MASSIVE beauty industry, and huge fashion industry too. Women are bombarded with images of beautiful, pencil-thin people, the message being that that's how we're all supposed to be.

And part of the reason I've been labelled a "tomboy" growing up and now is that I couldn't give a flying fuck about any of it. I think I decapitated Barbie. My brother's wooden truck with the squeaky wheel was more fun. I dress neatly, I keep my hair reasonably tidy, but I don't fuss over my clothes like some...

In school, there was also an expectation that girls didn't play certain sports. Netball was okay, but apparently the fact that I played Soccer got me labelled too (and it got me a weird sticker from the teacher promoting girls in sports)

There's more stuff too.... but I need to do my washing now.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that some access to independent (albeit censored) search in China is a good thing. It gives the Chinese people a greater access to information than Government-created Search Engines, whilst still complying with the government's wishes.

It also clearly labels what is censored, which is a good thing. It could just censor stuff without even saying so..... that would be worse IMHO.

I think Google are doing a service to the Chinese people. Yes, they have had to play by the government's rules in order to do so, but better access to information for the Chinese is only a good thing.

Oh, and I think they've changed their name in China too. I forget what it is, but I think it means something like "harvest".
