I had some thoughts on why people get angry about others getting Depression and Mental Illnesses after reading a bit about cognitive biases.

I wonder if it has to do a bit with things like the Just World Phenomenon. The Just World Phenomenon is a cognitive bias that a lot of people have where they have trouble with the idea that bad things happen to good people -- so they assume that for a bad thing to have happened, the person must have been bad.

It's also comforting to think this way I guess -- because then you can tell yourself that as long as you're a good person, then it won't happen to you.

Depression and Mental Illnesses also upset people's Illusion of Control cognitive bias -- as it can often be something that cannot be controlled...

Not understanding is certainly part of the issue -- despite there being more information now than ever before, it's not fully understood what causes some mental illnesses.

I don't think people like to think that this could happen to them too. They don't want to. It's easier to say that something another person did made it happen -- like that they're a "bad person" or whatever. Or that they're just not trying hard enough and therefore they "deserve" to feel miserable. No-one likes to think they could lose control over their body, mind or life -- by deciding that for some reason somebody did something to cause it to happen then they build up a false sense of safety.

Of course not understanding makes it easier to think such things, but I think it also ties into the Just World and Invulnerability Hypotheses. It happens with things like victim-blaming with regards to rape victims too.

It's useful for me too, but because of search results like this

what kind of drugs... warn "Server is on drugs: message number for message number $n is $num?"

What can you find?

EDIT: PHP has the most occurrences of "fuck". But if you code PHP you probably already knew that

Mum made me swim this morning. I only managed to do 1km before my acid reflux made it hard and I had to stop.

Now I'm soooo sore in my upper arms and inner thighs.

Exercise hurts Hope it gets better soon, I'm such a marshmallow...

Well, their loss I guess.

Swimming is one of the best exercises I can think of.

It builds endurance, muscle strength, posture, flexibility and cardiovascular fitness. Because you're in water and it takes the pressure off of joints, it's good for people with injuries that prevent them from doing exercise like walking and running. It can help reduce high blood pressure. It's fantastic for trying to lose weight. It works out many, MANY muscles all over your body. The health benefits of swimming are almost unmatched by any other sport, and cause you're in water there's no stress on bones, joints, etc so there's a low risk of injury too.

Course, I'm currently experiencing the fun all-over body ache I've only ever been able to get from swimming or martial arts But that's not injury, that's normal when you start a new exercise your muscles aren't used to.

I swam 1.2km today, and I swam faster than yesterday. Not too bad considering I haven't been swimming for a year.

Ah... that's really bad. Not the lack of understanding of technology, I don't expect everyone to be good with that -- the rudeness that you were woken and expected to perform Customer Support on demand!

I certainly wouldn't be so rude as to wake a person for such a purpose or expect support on demand. Drunk or not drunk, that's just plain rude.

I'm not going to bother too much though with her technical competence -- that's another issue -- and for all we know she's inept when sober too

Well, I've noticed that a lot of drunk threads seem to also serve the purpose of being an excuse for the original poster to be fairly offensive / abusive / swear a lot While making stupid typos so you have to try to "figure out" that they're swearing.

I make plenty of posts under the influence of alcohol (ie, now. God damn that Champagne... still.. honestly... omfg.... anyway, moving on), but I seldom make posts drunk. And when I did, I didn't make much sense... Even though I didn't make (m)any typos I thought it was obvious that my logic and reasoning had gone "bye bye".

"stuff" is a folder that appears on my Desktop from time to time, usually for periods not exceeding two weeks, before disappearing again.

"stuff" appears when I've been saving too much shit to my Desktop.

"stuff" is usually quickly sorted out and removed as soon as I'm feeling desktop-neat-freak-y.

Variations on "stuff" include "stupid shit" "dvbklfjhb" (etc) and "blah".

I've been known to say that things "slip faster than a three legged cat on a frozen pond". I got a weird look for that one.

I come up with lots of weird metaphors and analogies for trying to explain things at work. I can't think of any good ones right now. There was one about RAM and kitchen benches but I forget exactly what I said now.
