yeah, my thoughts exactly black lord.

although I think you misunderstood -- I was giving advice to others who couldn't run beryl. I have it set up just fine, but the water effects seriously screw things up on my system. My Graphics Card is an Nvidia Geforce 7900 GT OC, though, and Nvidia's drivers tend to be better on linux than windows, at least from my experiences.

I think Ubuntu is going to bridge the gap between Masochistic linux geeks like me, and casual desktop users like U1traMan here.

With all the easy to follow guides on setting things up (mainly http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy and the forums...), and active support for gnome and beryl/compiz on desktop, It is quite easily the best distro for windows/mac users to transfer to.

The best thing is, almost all major hardware is automatically supported. With distros like Gentoo and Slackware, I can tell you from experience that it may take you a week to get your sound card to work, and maybe two just to get xorg up and running.

If what you say is true about driver support -- I'm sure it will benefit the opensource community as a whole (open source drivers = ports to other systems including BSD/others).

The more hardware supported, the easier the setup process becomes, and the flashier the desktop looks, the more users will flock to Linux.

A major problem, however, is still commercial software. There will have to be a substantial shift of users (which is happening, but very slowly... a bit faster after ubuntu perhaps...) in order for companies to produce games/software for it. You can't even buy mac software at Wal-Mart anymore, why should they carry Linux?

And without that software support, there will be a lot of users unable/unwilling to switch. If we could get everybody in the world to use linux one day, I gurantee software companies would immediatly drop windows support. I bet even microsoft would make linux software then (or more likely, the microsoft linux joke could become reality...)

but all in all, the ubuntu movement is really pushing Linux forward in a way it hasn't been before. For the first time ever, there is a linux distro being backed by a multimillionaire just like M$ and Apple.

I am a firm supporter of ubuntu, and when I get a job, I might even donate to help the good fight.

Posted on 02-16-07 09:02 PM, in oh... man. Things are getting complicated (advice needed...) Link
This is strange. Usually guys don't have this kind of problem, but I do.

There's this girl who's been strongly attracted to me for over a year (to the point of obsession for awhile...). Problem is, I don't like her at all in that way. She's nice (actually, I've heard stories...), but I just don't.

actually, recently I've begun flirting with one of her friends. So alls well and good. I continue to be nice and polite to her, and trying to edge closer to her friend -- seeming to work out nice for a change! I mean, no matter how far I push with personal things, she seems quite open and nice about it, and thinks I'm hilarious and nice (and she recently broke up with her boyfriend before I met her!) .

anyway, this is where things get complicated. That other girl who I told you about in the beginning, well lets just say I told a couple of friends about it. They all know I need a girlfriend... Can you see where this is going?

They lied to her and told her I want to go to prom with her (she's a junior, and can invite me, a sophomore) I firmly denied this several times (in front of all of them -- yes I'll explain it to my friends tomorrow). They're only trying to help me out though.

no matter how many times I denied it, the two of my friends persisted (they're the type that only want one thing - from anyone), and she firmly believed I really said that. .

I don't want to piss anyone off here. Not only would it make me feel bad (I've been in a similar situation 100 times) but, I'm on a precarious perch with my social standing.

see I got rid of all my friends because they are the definition of losers. Hell one just plays XBOX live 24 hours a day now (he left once since he got highspeed internet) and they were jerks who denied the slightest intimation of a problem in their lives (even though most people think they're strange, ugly, and hate them).

now I'm in the upper upper class of popularity. You know. Them. I'm the lowest of that group, but hey,

A girl asks you out on a date and you begin yelling "THE JEDI HAVE NO SUCH ATTACHMENTS" and proceed to wet your pants and run away.

You start talking like yoda or a wookie.

when you mention the great hyperspace war in global history.

When you start to think someone you hate is a sith.

when you start to think someone you like is a jedi/sith (you could be evil...)

when you start to think YOU are a jedi/sith, and start to try out force powers.

Thats all I can think of now.
Add on or comment if you wish.

okay, we all know about linux and BSD. You don't really have to be a hardcore geek to have heard of them nowadays, as they are probably the wave of the future.

but aside from them, there are other OSs out there too, mostly unix based, but with the masses of fans for linux/BSD, finding those other operating systems is next to impossible via google.

anyway, from what I know there is Plan9, an insanely different, yet from what I've seen quite fast/responsive operating system with decent hardware support out-of-the-box, considering what it is.

there's also opensolaris -- I've been meaning to download this one. It's a "true" unix in the sense that it is solaris, from sun, in a open source/free version. I've heard its slow on x86 machines, but what about amd64? I want to dive into this one, and have some fun with it.

I already have a plan9 iso burnt, but wow, I can barely figure out the commands for it. I couldn't even find a substitute for find (well, I did find look...)

I really like it for some reason though. Although I think that some changes (copy to snarf for example) were just inane and pointless. But I like it's aesthetics, and the way it feels. It also boots/runs quite quickly, even off the liveCD.

anyway, what are other free operating systems outside the realm of BSD and linux (other unixes count too!)? I'm on a quest to screw around with as many as possible in my free time, and maybe learn a bit in between too.
