Posted on 01-10-07 01:46 AM, in collision detection Link
I've called it quits on my last project, and decided to start over on my 2D space game.

problem is, every time I try (with both SDL and Allegro) I cannot, for the life of me, get a collision detection system up and running.

I'd give some code that I've written, but that code has long since been deleted. I'm starting from scratch.

If someone could either point me out where I could learn to do basic bounding box collision in conjunction with SDL/allegro, that would be nice... I'd finally be able to make a game OTHER than a quiz game!

Posted on 01-30-07 03:16 AM, in finally getting a high-speed connection Link
as of this Friday, I will have Cable DSL through roadrunner (the lite package, which I have been told now offers 768 Kb downstream rate and 128 Kb upstream.

when I get more $$$ over the summer, I'll be upping the package to 1.5 Mb/s, but right now, 768k is good enough.

good bye 56k and good riddance. I'll finally be able to actually download a video file longer than a clip now (without waiting 5+ hours.)

not sure if games like quake 4 will be playable with the low upload speed, but I don't have a choice right now.

anyway, cheers to getting a real connection.

Posted on 01-30-07 03:45 AM, in theres neo-nazis and kkk in my area... and loads of kids on steroids... Link
yeah, lots of them.

one girl in my global history class drew a picture of hitler with a crown to exemplify absolutism (not even correct - absolutist societies have kings/queens, hitler's germany was a dictatorship)

not only that, but she wrote stuff that was antisemitic in english class. And openly admits to being/loving nazis and hating jews.

Also, I saw a group of neo-nazis drug-dealing at night, and they almost assaulted me for being a witness.

there's swastikas on the elementary school playground and MS/HS bathrooms.

The KKK isn't as bad, I suppose, but they do exist.

what pisses me off is that this is accepted in public school here. I seriously feel like beating up these fools (both male and female) for their ignorance.

while I am neither african american nor jewish (actually, I'm german in ancestry myself, I find this behavior unacceptable and highly racist.

I would say something, but theres just too many of them. And, as far as I know, no one has caused any violence yet. Just drug dealing and gang activity.

It is also a well known fact that a lot of people take steroids here. Even those who compete in sports (there are never any tests at the Varsity/JV levels) Hell, an alumni came to watch a wrestling match, sat next to me, and went into a roid rage when I got up, breaking another guys jaw because he said something.

and it's not just rumors. They've been seen shooting up, and even admit to it themselves. Hell, the guy I was talking about got kicked out of college for destroying a computer lab.

and this is a small mountain town. Big cities have far less problems -- probably from the long-term effects of diversity. I cant wait till I graduate and move off to college -- to get the hell out of here.

I think these are severe problems, and nobody does anything about it. It pisses me off.

Posted on 02-03-07 06:31 PM, in will an 'update' to vista soon be necessary? Link
I know that it is never really a forced issue, but will it soon be a necessity due to software support to get vista?

right now I have XP Media Center 2005 (basically a modded professional version), and my PC is built for gaming, but I know that some games (the upcoming halo 2 PC release) will only support vista.

this is Bulls*it for many reasons. Not only does vista hog up system resources, but it will force $100 out of my pocket that I don't even have (literally, not figuratively. After the empire state games come I'm broke)

edit:
I tried to download it on bittorrent, but it will take 3 days at only 8-10KB/s, and there are no http:// servers to leech off of.

To be honest, speed isn't an issue here. I have a system that will be able to run vista fullspeed with all features enabled (should I buy anything above home basic) without a doubt.

it's compatibility that is my main pet peeve. I want to run the NEWEST software. And now that M$ has made this their new tier product, I suppose developers will focus mainly on it, and drop standard windows XP support very soon.

why does M$ insist on completely new OSs when they could just upgrade and better what already exists?

anyway, do you guys think I'll need to go out and buy a copy this summer? If so, which version. Hopefully I can get a job at all this year...

when will games start requiring directx 10 though?

I think the new flight sim does now, and it is only obvious that others will as well...

what I don't like is that they restrict things like directX 10 from windows XP because they want more $$$, even if all users don't have any to give.

Posted on 02-05-07 04:42 AM, in The windows mixer is getting in the way of my (integrated) sound card's Link
I have a realtek HD integrated sound card, and my microphone... wasn't working so well.
It wasn't recording at a decent volume. I had to put my mouth physically on it in order to get it to recognize sound.

So after unsuccessfully playing with realtek's mixer, I decide that it is MSs Mixer causing the problem. So I screw around there, and eventually the problem is no more...

but then when I plugged headphones in, even though realtek detected them, the MS Mixer had totally taken over. sound still played through my speakers, but not my headphones.

so now I go back to using speakers -- no longer works. I have to screw around with MSs mixer for awhile (changing it back to primary output from secondary) and I have sound from my speakers again... but the volume bar when I increase/decrease the volume is no longer functional.

The volume will still change, but there is no indication whatsoever on the bar.

long story short, I need to totally shutdown MS mixer and replace it with Realtek HD Audio Manager completely again. And the "Windows Mixer" I speak of is the "volume control" under program files, accessories, entertainment.

thanks in advance, this is pissing me off...

eventually bill gates will become more infamous than famous anyway. Go talk to people at a Linux user group, mailing list, or forum. That and they seem to be causing some nasty political upheavals (problems that could lead to war) with situations like the power plants they recently acquired in China (if that was true at least)...

but lets not go all anti-microsoft, at least not in this thread. (I will point out that I like a good deal of MS products, it's just that the things they lack seem major to me...)

anyway, I feel the same way as you about death -- probably a great deal worse actually. Why worse? Because right now, I'm struggling as hard as I can to make my life better in every aspect, and I'm not sure that I can change much alone. But if I look back, I've changed a lot of things in only a matter of weeks/months.

For example,

the friends I had weren't very good -- quite loyal, but not good friends. I finally found out why they were so unpopular. but that doesn't matter. So I'm trying really hard to make new friends -- looks like I've succeeded here. I sit with new people at lunch, and I think I'm slowly building new friendships -- though right now I have almost no one to hang out with (save a few people once in a while) outside of school.

This one is a sore subject with me. One of my former friends (who I really, really hate... always have really) almost got me to knock him out by picking on me for it. He claimed he was better than me because of it, but 99.9% of people hate him. They call him a scumbag, but even people who really are scum don't want to associate with him. He is nothing.

what is it? girls. I've absolutely never had a girlfriend -- ever. and I'm a bit older than you (17 in one month). Why does it get me all riled up? well, for one, that wasn't really the only thing that got me mad. he said he was better than me. For two, I have an irrational fear that I will die without ever even having a chance to experience that. There is a great curiosity inside me that I have never been enabled to indulge. Even basic things like kissing seem highly mysterious to me.

but I'm trying to change that too. I'm talking to more girls now. not sure if I've made any solid progress, but hey, I'm talking to more girls, and they aren't running away. I call that a +.

also, I let my grades drop down to 80s for awhile. Anyone who really knows me could tell you I'd be a shoe in for colleges/universities like MIT, so 80s are low for me. REALLY LOW. There was a math teacher who hated me (and really, honestly couldn't teach, every student in the whole school has already agreed with me on this), and she gave a me a 74 one marking period, but my overall was like an 81.

so now I'm doing my homework again, and trying harder in school. My average right now is pretty close to 100%, and all I have to do is keep it there. I skipped today because I am (honestly) sick.

Some people say I talk too much, so I'm trying to be more quiet.

This may seem like a long rant about myself, and well, it sort of is. But there is some wisdom and experience in there for you too.

If your worried about death then your probably not satisfied in something with your life as it is. Your focusing too much on the end when it is just the beginning. Your post shows me a lot about you -- the words you used, and especially the fact that you mentioned you are wasting your life.

I think, however, that there are more major problems than World of Warcraft. Is there something else lacking in your life? The only thing you can do is try to change it, and believe me, it will take all the willpower you've got.

some people say "Just be yourself" and for a small part, this is true. However there are times that life demands a person to change, and depending on how you were brought up, and how your life has progressed, I believe that adolescence can be a time where major change is required, not in responsibility, but in oneself.

Every night I go to bed hoping things will change when I wake, but the difference is that I do something that next day -- even if it's only a small push forward, I'm not falling back. Don't be one of those people who goes into denial. Don't tell yourself your right and everyone else is wrong. Pain is sometimes necessary as a radical push for us to move forward.

As I said, I don't think death has anything to do with this -- take it from someone who was in your shoes less than a year ago, and is just stepping out. If you have more serious issues that need change, ones you don't know how to deal with, you can post them anonymously here or search online. However some things in life are dreadfully complex, and can only be discovered firsthand. Things like that can only be discovered through action, and believe me, there will be times you wished you'd done nothing.

some recommendations I have are:

1. Hang out with friends more and get off WoWC. Got no real friends? Go out and make some. Just talk to people. Find common ground -- and if you have none, go make some.

2. Join a sports team. Got no talent, no problem! Cross country, track, and wrestling seldom cut people. You probably won't make varsity, but there's always JV. You'll like it more than you think.

3. Flirt/talk with girls... or guys if your into that. It's fun. Even if they don't go out with you, it still helps build confidence, and helps make friends. I guarantee that about 75% of the girls you flirt with will at least be friendly with you. I can't really help you there -- I know to little, but at least try talking to them.

4. Got a weight problem? Too fat? Go on a diet and run a few miles a day. Too skinny? Eat more and go lift weights.

these are all things I have learned from experience. I hope they help you.

And about being remembered, think of all the people you don't remember. Go to a graveyard. there are trillions of people who weren't remembered. Do you even want to be remembered? People to debate whether you were good or evil after your death? Kids snickering about how dumb they thought you were in history class?

the most you can do is wait until your older, get married, and start a family to carry on your name. But even that won't get you personally remembered, and you might not want to do that.

Try to focus on the now. Embrace your problems instead of ignoring on them. Put all your focus on them, and on to removing them. Maybe you can't be the best in the world, but you can be something. There may be limits to what we all can accomplish, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't reach them just because we can't pass them. Just by trying to reach those limits we can sometimes discover they are much farther away than we imagined...

Posted on 02-11-07 10:52 PM, in can anyone point me to a TOS for RoadRunner in NY State? Link
I can't find it anywhere, and I really don't want the service shut off without any warning.

All I know is that they don't allow servers (which I can easily Disable in BSD/Linux) -- BTW, How well is this policy enforced in NY, I hear in Hawaii nobody really cares...

anyway, I need to be pointed to the TOS for Roadrunner in New York for previous Adelphia (Now Time Warner) Customers. I live in a small town that isn't listed on the Roadrunner site, but it is Close to Glens Falls, NY and Saratoga Springs, NY.

I also hear theres a 10 minute streaming limit (which I've really exceeded) for video, but I just want to check if these rumors are true...

I've downloaded a lot too... (I'm downloading PC-BSD right now...)

I have to say, legally I don't think they can bind me to anything! They gave Terms of Service agreement to me ever, and there is no copy that I can find available (I've scoured rr.com several times no to no avail).

any help is greatly appreciated.

also if you don't like linux, there IS a similar alternative.

BSD. I've only used it in a limited quantity, but I'm trying it out as a secondary OS after I'm done downloading PC-BSD (a variant of FreeBSD, because I hate the god-forsaken FreeBSD installer. I can't get it to work and feel like I'm not going to erase all my partitions. I've got a horror story about that one...)

anyway BSD is different flavor of Unix. While it may look the same on the outside, it is a more uniform OS than linux.

I compare linux to chaos and BSD to Order. Both philosophies have their advantages. Linux is a fast paced powerhouse with thousands new hardware supported very quickly. There are more and more people working on it daily too.

BSD has a slower development pace, and often it takes software months/years to get ported over fully, although there is a (quite good) layer of compatibilty with linux applications

Although it's main advantages are it's

1. ports system (which is mimicked by Gentoo, probably the most highly acclaimed distro as of late, mostly due to it's ports system...) This will easily solve your problems with getting software. Almost all major software is in the ports system, so compiling isn't necessary as often as in linux, and seeing as it is a major part of the OS itself, it is much more well supported, less buggy, and easier to use than most linux package managers.

2. The OS is upgradeable! thats right, you don't have to download the install CD set for each version, through portage, you can actually upgrade the core OS to new versions. BSD is a whole operating system, not just a kernel and underlying programs.

it is also even more stable than linux (due to it's slower growth rate) and faster for a majority of issues (based off many, many benchmarks I have seen)

Although, I've used linux for a loooong time, and I have to defend it as well. all that "Illegible" stuff does actually make sense if you understand programming (more specifically makefiles)

that is there so you can tell where the compiler screws up and how in case the person that coded it screwed up somewhere. And I do believe you can place make in silent mode.

most of your issues, XKeeper, I would only expect from a PC novice (no offense meant). Even windows variants of make (from Borland to VC++) have similar (if not essentially the same) output.

you also have to realize that while DOS is simpler to use, it is highly restrictive. What about Symlinks? How about the various shells available?

hell, with modern distros, all you need to do is clikc a few times, wait like 30mins to an hour, and you have a whole system setup and ready to go with little/no configuration. FOR DESKTOP AND SERVER AND WORKSTATION!

sure, sometimes there can be issues getting hardware to work. But nowadays, unless the hardware is extremely obscure, it probably doesn't work because (like winmodems) they are based off cheap hardware that need windows to run, or are brand new and you'll need to wait awhile.

Unix variants are suitable for all types of users and setups. In a not so far off future, it is likely that they will dominate the PC market. You must realize that all this DRM crap (and vista's "security") are nothing more than an attempt to fight back against the Open Source community that is dealing them a death blow, Apple hasn't posed MS a real threat in many years.

There are thousands of personal users converting daily, and soon businesses will convert as well. The server market is dominated, the desktop market is beginning to rise in favor of *nix/BSD, and once desktops take a firmer hold, businesses will start using it too because that will be what all the software is for, and what employees will be comfortable with.

Microsoft's dominance is slowly dying down, and its stock havent fallen only because of the Xbox. Call me a fanboy/loyalist, but its the truth. MS is going to die long before Unix variants do. Its what the people want, they just arent educated enough on the matter to realize it.

I had a livecd going yesterday, all my hardware working 100%, and I was online and screwing around in like 5 mins. yesterday. Thats a lot more than Windows users can ever say.

Posted on 02-12-07 03:12 AM, in FreeBSD is giving me more errors than I can handle... Link
I'm doing an install of FreeBSD (now that I have DSL, Ports seems really nice to have)

At first, during the install screen, it said ACPI had failed (Don't even know what that is...). So I installed with the "Disable ACPI" option. No problem, right? Wrong.
It did install successfully though.

I go to boot it up, and it presents me with the installation menu again. Same problem, same solution. It boots to the splash screen. Takes awhile. Then, instead of a login or desktop, it brings me to a console with errors out the wazoo. I *Did* see a login option, but is was quickly covered in errors.

they were all errors that something wasn't "ready". Not sure what, but it seemed to be a hardware issue.

this is strange, my setup used basic hardware:
LG monitor on an Nvidia card (supported)
on my secondary 40GB SeaGate ST340810A (should be supported)
Keyboard works.

it might be something to do with the HD -- I took it out of an old PC and put it in my new one. Is there any reason this could cause issues?

if not than whats going on here. I'm clueless...

I return with info!

I think it's registering my IDE hard drive (I know, I installed it myself) as an SCSI one <- Bad...

anyway, the errors are

ACPI:

ACPI -0213 *** Error: AcpiLoadTables: AE_AD_CHARACTER

and the same for namespace.

along with something about non-ascii characters (again, my PC definitely supports ascii -- the hardware detection is screwing up royally.)

boot up errors:

I get these for da0, da1, da2 and da3
there is a -> pointing to d6 after all of them.

its

SCSI Status error (of course, I have no SCSI drives!)
(da#: umass -sim:0:0:0:3)
Not Ready csi-0,aa,55,40
asc: 3a, 0

those funky da#s I stated above are listed at the bottom with a -> da6 after

I'm pretty sure it's detecting my IDE Hard drive as an SCSI one for some reason. What I need to know is why this is happening and how to fix it. Could it have been a problem when I installed it, or is it just BSD?

Im not asking if I should shave something. rather, I do shave it. and by it, I mean down there. yes, thats right, down THERE.

now, until recently, this would never have even been a problem, but I've been trying a lot harder now to get a girlfriend, and I know for a fact that in 2 weeks, I'll be drunk for the first time (with other people, that I DO TRUST mind you) ever. I'm not peer pressured into it either, I just want to experience new things.

but anyway, just in case something ever happens, I'll have you know I bleed a LOT when shaving that area. and not just nicks, I mean the blood gushes on the scale of being cut, and I have to shower afterwards until it stops. It doesn't hurt (anymore) when I get cut, just lots of blood (enough to fill a tissue with big dark spots).

If something ever does happen, won't this seriously increase the chance of getting an STD? I mean, you cant see them after they stop bleeding, but there's lots of cuts/nicks down there (they don't scar though, thank god). Even if I used protection, they don't protect the area around the almighty shaft. (lol)

and no, I don't actually cut the apparatus itself, more the area around it.

if so, is there any way I can stop cutting myself? I've tried shaving cream, and it just stings my... scrotum, and I still bleed.

I'm thin and I have a lot of dips in my body, and I have the same problem shaving my face, too.

Posted on 02-14-07 10:09 PM, in just installed ubuntu -- my review. Link
Let me tell you, in my few years here on earth, I've tried a lot of linux distros, and this has to be the most user friendly distro out of all of them.

from my humble beginnings of learning linux with muLinux (an archaic floppy disk version... it was nowhere near up to date, but taught me a lot) to me becoming a true user with RedHat 7, and finally my (near) Mastery of the OS with Slackware 9, 10, and 10.1 more recently, this is my all time favorite distro now. from the distros I mentioned, to all the obscure ones I've tried in between, none compare.

What I love the most is that with just one boot up from the CD everything just works. It doesn't take a linux guru (which I do consider myself) and a full 7 day week to set everything up.

As long as you have DSL/Cable, updating the system is no problem. In about 40 minutes, the system was up to date on my 768k Down cable connection. For most of you, it will be a lot less, with about 1.5 to 5 Mb/s down for speed.

anyway, The sound card works, my graphics card works (although I had to get the latest nvidia drivers through apt-get... no problem)

The thing that is different, that I must mention, is the fact that root works differently out of the box with Ubuntu. For some of you, it is your first distro, and if you ever migrate out, you might find trouble. The way other linux (and BSD, UNIX, probably AIX... and hell, almost all UNIX variants) systems work is to have root as a specific account with it's own password.

Ubuntu here requires sudo and uses the user password. For most cases this isn't a problem, but if it is, a sudo passwd in terminal can fix that right up.

Personally, I love gnome. I think it has a nice, clean, fast and efficient interface, and I personally like it better than KDE. Having a distro that welcomes gnome into it, and even integrates it gives me a feeling of "home". Slackware once had dropline gnome, but now thats pretty much history. Give gnome a chance, I find all the "eye candy" that KDE has just stupid (And my GeForce 7900 GT OC can handle WAYYY more than KDE)

What I find most surprising of all is that, aside from my basic hardware, Ubuntu configured my Nvidia Forceware network controller so I had internet connectivity out of the box. usually I have to plug the modem in via USB to set things up so easily.

overall, I highly reccomend this to linux novices, or migrating PC/MAC users. It doesn't take a tecchie like me to do anything. Even installing to the hard drive is simple!

This is the push Linux needed for the Desktop market. I can see this distro gaining great accliam in the next few years, and possibly inspiring even better distros in the future. This is a nice desktop based linux operating system that is easy to install, and use, for me, configuration was not even necessary at all!

uhh... N64 is a nintendo console, and all the (good) N64 emulators use the plugins system as well.

as long as you have a graphics card, finding plugins is easy. If you don't... emulating these systems isn't worth trying, you won't be able to anyway.

if you get a good graphics card, you can run most games with better graphics than the actual system.

lol, at least you don't have a jungle on the *other side* of your pants like I do. You probably don't need to know this, but I'm getting a kick out of it, so lets just say the amazon has nothing on *that* patch of grass.

I tried shaving that once -- too hard. Can't seem to get it close enough and it looks retarded (no one sees it anyway... in my case). If I ever go that way again, I'm definitely waxing. The pain would be worth the reduction in trouble.

anyway, I don't think I'll have to really worry about it for a long time. If ever. According to most people I'm "Eughh" (not sure how to spell that sound ). Although a few people have said I was cute... but they were probably lying so my feelings wouldn't get hurt.

not that I have anything against her personally, it's just that, as John Stewart pointed out, the media made this slightly less important than 9/11. And it also goes to show you how much I care - 0%. I didn't even know she was dead until yesterday. Shows you how much I watch TV .

It's things like this that make me wish we were communists. All people should be equal -- celebrities shouldn't even exist in my opinion.

There is a tool by seagate called discwizard that has such a utility, but I've never tried it (I used it to reformat a hard drive..)

should work on all hard drives, not just seagate drives. at least it did on my computer.

You supposedly have to format the second hard drive and select the boot drive option. I don't know, I haven't tried it, and can't guarantee thats what it does, but it's what I got from the program.

You can no longer download the iso from seagate, however (discontinued, they are making a new version), so I'll provide a direct link to the iso (right click, save as):
http://download.opendrivers.com/drv/storage/seagate/DWSE_EN.ISO

well, I figure formatting the second drive won't do any damage so long as you only copy the first one. I believe the option I told you about exists for the sole purpose of what you want.

hope that helps...

Posted on 02-15-07 07:47 AM, in Where's the weirdest place you've ever purchased a video game? Link
Well, I bought a few games in an adult bookshop... not to mention the ones I got from the red light district in holland

lol, just kidding. I'm obviously not even old enough to go to those places (and no, I don't have a fake id...)

anyway, the weirdest place I ever bought a game would have to be the salvation army. You can get some real finds there if you look. I got me a master system and a bunch of games for it, as well as countless other treasures I cannot remember.

I remember this one time, a salvation army had one of those strange nes controllers that looked sort of like a laptop (I forgot the name...). You put your and on it, and moved your hand/fist instead of buttons, it was motion sensitive. Precursor to the wii I guess you could say. I have the name of it in a NES game codes book in my basement, I'll look it up soon if someone doesn't beat me to the name...

I didn't buy it though (wish I did, that was a rare find... even when they first came out) but the idiots all the salvation army don't know what things are worth. sometimes you rip them off (I got the master system for like 10 bucks...) other times, they end up ripping you off. The thing was either $100 or $150, and I didn't have that kind of money.

Posted on 02-15-07 11:28 PM, in just installed ubuntu -- my review. Link
yeah, I have some horror stories about repartitioning. Once I installed DOS to play old games -- it decided to format my whole hard disk. I got cocky and figured "Oh, it'll just use free space"

I was wrong. Had to get all sorts of windows specific hardware working using only CD-Rs, Another computer, and Slackware Linux. I did, however, learn how to run AOL in linux as well as setup 3 types of winmodems (no problems now that I have cable internet)

anyway, I just installed beryl (for teh 5th time now...), and let me warn new users -- don't install this yet if you aren't willing to put some extra hours in should it screw up your installation. It did mine a few times...

If you have any problems, login to a failsafe terminal session, type in
sudo nautilus
now enable "view hidden files" and go to /home/[name]. Delete the .beryl derectory here, and restart gnome/kde/xfce. It will create a new configuration directory without errors.

also, if you get errors, or cannot get things working after changing beryl's settings, I caution you to remember what you changed, follow the steps above and MAKE SURE NOT TO ENABLE THOSE OPTIONS AGAIN!!!

The water effects screw up my box for some reason (dunno why, my graphics card is pretty good...)

aside from that, beryl gives you a system that kicks vistas sorry @55. Still has less errors too (but the ones it does have seem to be quite nasty...)
