Posted on 12-15-06 09:55 PM, in finding/editing specific lines from a text file in C++ Link
After trying several configurations with C++ code, none of which working, I have decided to move on to using LUA.

I have figured out how to load the file/convert it to a string within LUA (and possibly even searching/indexing the string) but not how to replace text. I've been googling for awhile now, and I can't find anything specifically related to changing text in an existing file within a LUA Script.

I do rather like the language though.

and as for a GUI, I'm coding the WinAPI myself now with SmartWin++ -- it makes windows programming a lot less of a PITA -- actually the simplest GUI library I've ever used.

anyway, any links to articles/tutorials/docs about editing a textfile from within LUA scripts would be VERY helpful.

I can never seem to get positioning right -- if I use pixels to measure absolute/relative position, someone with a smaller screen res than mine (1280x1024) won't see the whole page. If I use percentages (really hard for some reason -- lots of guess and check) then it seems that when the browser window is small or the page is viewed under a different resolution, the style gets all screwed up...

how do you go about creating a style sheet that would position your layout (like this board, for example) where things are positioned, but screen res and/or small or maximized browser windows.

I don't want to use tables, but it looks to me like there is no other way. And yes, I'm running the newest lololol -- my CSS viewing capabilities are up to par.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

right now I'm trying to create a new, more modern feeling web design for my new site.

I sort of want it to integrate well with my forum, Simplemachines (sorry acmlm crowd, I just want to try it out... I still love aboard though), in color/design...

I want to have a basic, clean, design with a centered header that spans the page by 100%, one bar on the left, and one on the right, and a box in the center for the main content of a page.

I'd use a WYSIWYG editor, but that just produces broken code for one fixed screen resolution. so I guess notepad is my friend on this one...

Posted on 12-19-06 12:32 AM, in looking for a language better suited to my abilities... Link
I've been struggling to crank out projects in C++ for awhile now, and while I'm rather comfortable with the language, I just don't seem to ever have the ability to finish the jobs I work on.

Sure, I can code simple things -- probably a lot more than a lot of people -- but I should know more for my 5th or 6th year of C++ coding. I get a lot of the code completed, only to find that I need to use a new technique -- which alone isn't that bad, but after trying to solve the problem for several weeks/months (while asking for help, but not truly comprehending the answers given...) I think its time to switch to a language that helps me be more productive.

the speed/small size of C++ applications is extremely useless if I can't even create a program that works. Not to mention that the more advanced features of the language (in-line assembly, etc.) I am nowhere near even trying to use. (I know as much assembler as my dog)

I'd use a scripting language (python... I like it...) but scripts are harder to distribute on a windows platform, as not everyone has or will download a 10+MB interpreter.

So now I'm looking for alternatives.

BASIC still seems like a fools language to me. not because of its abilities, but because there are oh so many separate compilers with separate syntax -- unlike Java or C, BASIC is more of an outline for a programming language than a language in it's own.

Pascal is a definite opportunity. slightly more complex than BASIC, but less so than C (If I am to understand correctly) are there GUI functions? how about file i/o -- is it easy/hard?

JAVA is another language I was looking at. It has similar syntax to C++ (which I am comfortable coding in) and supposedly removes most of the fuss involved with C++ programs (garbage collection, a bit more flexible/forgiving) and remains object oriented. same questions as pascal -- I heard about project Metisse in netbeans -- is java GUI programming still a nightmare? I'm assuming file i/o is similar to that of C++.

other languages are definitely options as well. Im looking for something that has simpler application and use than C++ code does. syntax is not an issue for me. (although I must say, I do think perl is quite an ugly scripting language...)

my main issue with c++ is that I know what I need to do, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it with the language. I end up producing broken code, that, if it even functions at all, is highly inefficient. usually I don't even get to a point where my projects are usable and I just give up.

edit:

I have located freezepython, which basically includes the interpreter in a package. although the file sizes here are quite unweildy due to DLLs I have to include. (tcl84, tk84m and obviously pyhon25.dll) so a compiled language would still be nice.

Although in the age of fast processors and high-speed internet, so running speed and 3+MB filesize matter (for the average user, not business) ? If I can't find a good compiled language, I'll stick to python.

basically the project I'm trying to complete now is a configuration utility that exchanges one line in a text file with another. (the config files have values, ie lighton=1 or dog=0)

hell, I could probably code a text editor pretty quick in C++, but this is different. Ihave to go to a character on a specific line and overwrite the value. Definitely not a strong area for C (Perl would probably do the job well, but my project is for a game, and most windows gamers don't happen to have Perl installed on their PCs.)

I know the io of C++ in basic terms, once you get into using binary [mostly c io] and bit size I get lost though. I can output a variable to a blank file, append it to the end/beginning, read it, and copy it to an identical file, but I just can't figure out how to copy the file to a buffer (at all) edit it, and then rewrite it to the text file (probably can figure that part out if I can get the buffer...)

the only buffer experience I have is with images (SDL/Allegro), and this is TOTALLY different.

an alternate route would be to take the file line by line, assign each line (over 200...) to separate variables, edit the ones I need to, erase the original text file, and rewrite them all to a new text file with the same name in exact order.

With C/C++ io it's enough to drive me mad. I can't seem to figure out how to do it with other languages either, but with lua/python I've been able to read the file with a lot less code, and that makes me think editing it might be easier as well -- but python info is sparse on the web, and I've looked over all I can find (yes the official tutorial too...).

It seems I've jumped into something extremely painful to code. I might just give up on this one. Hell, I don't think I could accomplish this task in BASIC...

I say you don't have a right to feel like shit until you are forced to accept the fact that you have never had a relationship, and probably never will, unless its with someone of extreme obesity or worse...

thats where I am right now, and I hate it (and myself) because of it.

in short, if you could get one girl, forget her and go get someone else. it's obviously not impossible (for you).

she was just trying not to hurt you, probably... sounds like she doesn't hate your guts. I've been in similar situations (though I was turned down with all of them, obviously) and I'm still friends with a bunch of those girls.

Although if you really cared about her, it will piss you the f*** off and make you depressed when you see her. So it's pretty much your choice if you still wanna be friends, although I can guarantee it won't be for too long. eventually you'll both become distant and end up moving on.

there is no justice to this world. I guess Darwin put it best when he said "...only those best suited to their environment..." would be able to survive.

I am not suited to this environment. I hate myself, and most of the people I meet/know. I hate myself because I'm a failure, and others because they're stupid, greedy, ignorant jerks, who don't even realize the value of what they have.

I have trouble getting to sleep, as I am constantly filled with horrible emotional pain (sometimes I lose it and start laughing hysterically and acting as if I am high on heroine, though this is rare)

when I can sleep, it's only for about an hour at a time, and isn't restful at all because it is full of hellish (yes, hellish -- worse than you can imagine) nightmares.

then I cannot wake up in the morning, and have no desire to even go to school anymore. I already went from an A student to a C/D student. and guess what? I could give a crap less.

before you pull that "chemical imbalance" thing out, it is important to realize that my life, in reality, really does suck. Its stress stress stress with no relief, and work work work without a moment of peace and/or joy.

All the fun things in life have banned me from entry. I don't wanna die, but I don't feel like living either. I just want to sleep peacefully for the rest of eternity. No worries, pain or suffering, just sleep, uninterrupted by dreams.

I tried to fix my problems. I accepted it was my fault and opened the closet door to face all those demons I was hiding. But they beat me. I lost. What I learned was that all my problems are my own fault and I can't fix them. Ever.

I don't want to face myself or my failures ever again. I want to change, but I cannot change who I am. I cannot change my flaws as they are permanent.

I have finally been broken. It took years to do it, but it has been done.

and yes, I do believe I have almost totally lost it at this point, though I do maintain the ability to process logical and coherent thoughts perfectly still. Although I am a total wreck.

so do I have the right to consider myself a failure yet? Based off all my attempts at things It's a definite 'yes'. As a matter of fact, I've never been able to succeed at all, and I don't know why.

All I can say is that I am living proof that effort cannot always bring success. I am so persistent, I might add, that someone once told me that "Sometimes you have to just give up on things..."

I can't. I can't accept my life will be meaningless and devoid of happiness. if this is true I would rather die than work for a society that has some enjoyment while I couldn't (Sort of why I hate everyone)

for me there is nothing.

I am a rabid dog, starving, with food being dangled in front of it's face, yet I am caged and cannot bite back. I am oh so tired, but I am unable to sleep. And thirsty, but there is no water that is not polluted and vile.

and yes, that was metaphorical. I can eat and drink and sleep, but not to fill the void. I have eaten, before, to get away from these feelings, all the while trying to fix my problems, but things only got worse. Then I went to sleeping, but things are so bad now, I can never get enough, and my nightmares make things even worse.

I'm in pretty bad shape.

I think they are alive.

whats more is, I think they are actually better suited to life than we are. For we cannot defeat them, and aids is a very likely end to the entire human race, eventually.

Hell, if aids every evolves (which it does rapidly, thats why we cannot effectively treat it) to an airborne form, it would kill all but a few (10%) Europeans (mostly male) who are effectively immune to it's effects. This would effectively eliminate our entire race.

if you are interested, They believe these people are descendants of people who survived the black plague due to a mutation where they do not have the proper receptors on their cells. They can still be carriers, though, and spread it to others.

wouldn't it be fun, though, to travel through the universe only to find that somewhere else, viruses evolved in place of cells (it is possible) and sentient life that is virus-based instead of cell-based exists out there somewhere.

Remember, cells are how things work here on earth, but the universe is a HUGE place, and other living things made up of totally unknown building blocks (or known things, such as virii) out there.

uhh... you can format an HDD without removing the OS?!?!?!?

I dunno, last time I checked, a format erased the contents of your hard drive completely. Sounds to me like you didn't actually format it. If you did, windows would not be installed on the HD (nothing would).

dunno about the encryption, but if a format works, completely reformat the HD, and install windows on it when the thing is totally blank.

if that doesnt work, go buy a new HD at Best Buy...

thanks, but Im still a bit... lost...

I'll *try* to screw around with your code in C, but to be honest, it's a bit above my head.

If I keep at it, I might be able to get it to work eventually, but I have to learn new skills either way.

and I dont think doing it in BASIC would make things much easier (would it?) as the concept is the same, just simpler syntax. it's going about creating code that would actually do this that is the trouble for me...

1) After loading into the buffer, scan through it with a normal For loop looking for newline characters. In Windows, newlines are two bytes: 0x0D 0x0A, in that order.

2) When you find the line you want to change (scanning with a secondary For loop), resize the buffer so it's big enough to accomodate for any increase in size. Then, using another For loop, scoot every byte--from last to the current position--forwards into the new area. Then set the bytes in question to your new value.

is that 3 nested for loops? I guess I could do that (I've used nested loops before...)

If the resulting buffer will be smaller, simply scoot all subsequent data backwards then resize the buffer to the new size.

thats where you got me.

also, these lines are not directly above/below each other. I need to skip between over 50+ lines at certain points.

I get the basic gist of the code you wrote, but I still have no idea how to apply it to what Im doing... I don't think I'm cut out for this stuff anymore...

screw your old friends. I just ditched mine on purpose. It can be a good opportunity.

they were unpopular -- for a good reason, I recently found out. They're all jerks. They insist that they're better than me (probably feel threatened because I am superior in every way)...

also, they pick arguments/fights with me. One of them tried to fight me (physically) not too long ago. I didn't hit him back because he stood no chance, and I would have sent him to the hospital (or killed him... I'm waaay stronger!). So now I ditched those loser nerds and am hanging out with new people (I, somehow, manage to make friends easily all the sudden).

I have no close friends yet, but I will soon enough. I'm basically hanging out with jocks now instead -- but hell, we don't fight.

might not have been the best way to deal with things but I feel a hell of a lot better right now.

I ditched my old friends because they are complete asses who insist they are better than me at almost everything. Even when I proved them wrong. Hell, one tried to have a fist fight with me because I told him he was wrong -- although he's so small, weak and fragile I made sure not to punch him, because if I did, I would have sent him to the hospital and/or killed him. He's one of those aggressive, ugly, little napoleon type guys, but has absolutely no strength, and is a damn retard.

my other ex-friend, who instigated the situation is a fat, stupid, self-righteous, son of a bitch, who trys to force that his (newly christian) opinion is fact and ultimately correct, and always disses me and says he's better. In terms of strength, like the other little guy (although i've broken his nose before, and thrown him 3 times... think he'd get the hint huh?) and a lot for the fact that I don't have a girlfriend (he makes his the center of his life totally, and thats bad if your not even 18 yet, and I'm sure he'll cheat on her, and then go kill himself later. good for him. shes an ugly, stupid bitch anyway, shes a 19 yo without a job living with he parents dating a 17 yo who's destined to be a bum.)

the others are just freakin weird. and all of them are lazy good for nothings who just sit around and do nothing with their lives, while I try to better myself, and they just call me retarded.

so I ditched them. I hate them, and am now their mortal enemy. Instead I'm in the process of trying to find a healthier group of friends. After I ditched the old ones, it just felt so... good. I have no doubt that it was totally the right thing to do. they are complete assholes.

Also, I'm training to be an excellent runner still, and have started seriously lifting weights. I'm hoping to still see some improvement without taking any supplements (or steroids... which I probably wont take anyway... I will say the downsides other than the anger really wont affect me at all if you get my drift.) I'm trying to work 5x as hard as I have to. I swear -- I will become jacked (body-builder type build, for those who don't know the term) even if it kills me.

I feel a lot better right now, and I guess thats better than nothing. although Im still not 100% ok...

Posted on 12-27-06 06:10 AM, in Will we ever find a way to stop viruses? Link
1000 years ago, I'm sure someone thought we'd be able to cure the cold by now.

I know this is far from a menial task, but will we ever find a way to stop them. After hearing about them in Bio class (only in HS but so what...), I think about this a lot. It fascinates me. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that we can stop them if we work at it the right way.

I'm no scientist, but before I go on, here are my thoughts:

my best thoughts on the matter turn to the way we produce insulin, and the way viruses reproduce. Figure this, you have a virus that as injecting its DNA into your cells' nuclei. This DNA is entirely different than yours (I know this may not always be true, there may be similarities). We produce humulin by using enzymes to cut human DNA at a point, and replace it with a bacteria's. now, I know there are trillions of cells in our body, but by inserting an enzyme formulated for the virus in question into the cell, would it not simply slice the viruses DNA in two as it entered the cell and basically immunize cells against that type of virus?

This is totally impossible with a person living now, as we have trillions of cells and no way to do this to them all. but it would be a starter. Not only that, but the error ratio in virus reproduction guarantees the DNA/RNA that makes them up would probably change, making this method essentially useless. Still a fun idea though.

also, these are rather simple, but they are still valid:

extreme temperatures -- can viruses remain active in extreme hot/cold?

you can freeze a person with cryogenics for up to an hour, if extreme cold could affect a virus, then it may lead to a (rather dangerous and expensive) future treatment plan. I'm not saying it would simply stop the virus, just possibly slow it down.

if they do remain active in extreme cold, then we should work on cryogenics more, as the virus would then not be able to reproduce, and eventually, it would just dissappear, no?

as for heat, it would kill a person, but I'm sure it would kill the virus too. Just another starter for ideas.

back on to the subject:

essentially if you could stop viruses from reproducing, you would end them. To do this, you would need to find some way to break the DNA/RNA injected by the virus into the victim's cells, without damaging theirs.

A huge problem, as I stated above, with viruses, is that they have many mutations (changes) in their genetic make-up as the rapidly reproduce.

the only suitable idea I can think of is to compare the human body to a computer, and the immune system we have as a virus scanner (virus being a virus, lol, and a hacker too. it has to get in there somehow.). See, the virus hacks/infects you. You have no firewall, and by the time your virus scanner(immune system) even realizes trouble, damage has been done. the virus then changes, and your scanner can no longer pick it up.

so essentially we need a firewall. again, not a simple task to put into application, but a simple idea nonetheless. Something included in cells, or the bloodstream, that would identify problems and eliminate them, or simply stop these anomalies from creating more of themselves. This is basically an artificial immune system.

my question is, will we ever find that firewall? Ever find a way to stop these little things?
I think if we cure the cold, the same method will work for all other viruses.

FYI, there are living things that cannot function without each other. it's called a parasite, look it up. Also, viruses can live without a host. If they couldn't they'd never spread. They'd die the second you coughed.

the real issue as to why we debate if viruses are living or not is because they defy the cell theory and the current definition of life.

In other words, people are too god d*** arrogant, and unwilling to accept that there very well may be (and is, in the case of the virus) non-cell based life.

they are also arrogant enough to allow themselves to define life, and insist their definition is correct. Anything developed by humans is essentially flawed. from math to religion, science to art, everything we do is flawed, as is anything any other organism ever does anywhere in the universe. but that is a debate for another time.

my issue is that one day, we may very well come in contact with a being from some other world, either equal, smarter, or a bit dumber than us, and these creatures won't be made of cells. however, at this point, we will have already found ton's of animals out there, but a debate won't rise to ask if they are living until one says something.

because one does not need energy, is one not alive? I think it is. I think it's better than us, actually.

science is going the way of religion. what research is being done is hardly efficient or useful, and what research that is important, is terminally flawed because we are unwilling to rewrite the book and admit we were wrong.

The definition of life is one of those things. Hell, lets say I find something. It's the same as me IQ wise, can talk, run, play, think, but does not eat, reproduce, or grow. according to our definition of life, this is not alive because of the 3 things it cannot do.

I say we need to redefine life, and anyone who has issues with it should be ignored. Earth is not the center of the universe, and even here there are anomalies.

my definition of life would be vague as hell:

1) acts in some way on its own, without any stimuli.

thats it. I say anything that actually acts in some way without the intervention of another is alive. An involuntary movement counts, a heartbeat counts, or in the case of a virus, infection counts.

this would still effectively separate life from non-life, like, lets say a rock. a rock can't do anything but be a rock, unless you throw it, but it cannot throw itself, so it is not alive. if sand moved underneath it, it would be an environmental stimulus, and not a self-controlled event. so a rock, by my definition, would still not be alive, no matter what.

maybe I went to far. I dont think I care. It's 12:30 AM and Im done here.

Everything on my PC works fine, but when I turn the thing off, power is output to devices that really don't need it (my keyboard/mouse, speakers, etc.)

now, before, this really wasn't a problem -- shut off the speakers, and turn off caps lock/num lock/scroll lock, and the speakers and keyboard wouldn't use any power anyway.

but now I just bought a new mouse (my first mouse with more than 3 buttons! It's got 5)
It's an optical mouse. Now, I know it may not cost too much on the electric bill, but the laser/lights on my mouse are always on as long as they are plugged in. Even if I shut down the system.

is there any way I can set it not to output power from the PS2 ports? Any other way to stop the power output? Or am I stuck unplugging all my peripherals after I turn off my PC?

thanks in advance...

I understand that text headers got annoying (anyone who's been here for 3+ years knows that), but why sigs?

images in sigs, and full post layouts, take more bandwidth than, say a link saying visit my forum/blog/etc.
I know that with aboard, a big plus is customizable layouts in posts, but it is still a forum tradition to have basic text/image signatures.

did something happen to deny users this? New host rules/requirements? Or just l33t staff attitudes towards text?

I don't mean to offend any staff members here by asking, I just cannot fathom why it's such a big deal.

This board really has changed over the years... Acmlm has basically disappeared from the public eye, ads were added to the fourm, and now no text sigs/headers. wow.

Posted on 12-30-06 11:47 PM, in Perl Link
I don't use it, but from what I've seen I hate the syntax. I also have no real use for the language.

I don't like the idea of glyphs (I think thats what they're called) to mark variable types. The C/C++ style variable assignment (int, char, etc...) seems to make code easier to read, and understand, albeit 1 second longer to type.

on the web, PHP has pretty much replaced perl. Perl is still used, but not nearly as much as it used to be, and PHP is pretty much the most popular web scripting language out there now, probably due to it's c-style syntax and simplicity, as well as speed, security and cost.

off the web, it is pretty much useless to windows users, but still maintains great functionality in Unix for building bigger, more complex scripts that shell scripting just can't handle. Although in all my Unix admin years, I have never found it necessary or helpful to use perl. I just never had the need to, and shell scripts and python served me just fine.

that brings in python to my argument. Python is, arguably, a lot more useful as a general language than perl, and with bindings to Tk, Qt, and GTK, general applications are easier and faster to write than in perl.

Although perl still serves its original purpose in that it is superior for extracting, editing, and reporting text. Hell, I've seen scripts that find/edit text in perl that are beyond the basic language in simplicity for that kind of thing. I gave up trying to do it in C++ and python, but a simple search on the web gave me of an example that was only a few lines long, and 100 times simpler than what I was trying to in C by comparison.

so overall, I'd say it depends on your needs/preferences. If you dislike OOP and python syntax, it may be a better general purpose language for you, but perl isn't seen/heard of much in the windows world. If you need to write scripts to do text editing, I'd say perl bar none. On, the web, I don't really think perl is much of a contender. PHP has become to popular, and (dare I say it?) too damn sexy.

keep in mind that I base all that I have said from scripts that I've seen. I have never written a single perl script myself, and honestly, I don't plan to in the near future. I would, I just don't have a reason to bother using the language now, so no hard feelings perl buffs.

funny enough, one of these came out in the states a long time ago.

I don't think it was official nintendo, but it certainly was a GBA MP3 player. I saw it in a box that had discount stuff that had to go in EB years ago (back when there were still displays of PS1 games at GameStop)

not sure how well it played, I didn't bother buying it. Although my issue with these players would have to be volume. I've already killed my ears, so I can't seem to get them to play that loudly.

But why doesn't nintendo release these things in the U.S. I mean, if they released everything in every country, their profits would increase by an insane amount, but no, they will continue to have Japan-only, US-only, and EU-only releases. Its marketing strategies like this that (partially) drove me out of console gaming. Now I'm a PC gamer.

I have it, but I preferred the original (I downloaded a translated rom).

I despise them

Spoiler:
making the onion knight a secret class and lowering the power of the ninja and sage

Also, I think the 4 brothers was kind of cooler.

Spoiler:
it also made more sense when you saw the 4 fake heroes... they looked alike and so did you at one point.

not to mention the fact that they

Spoiler:
ruined the whole fake heroes scenario by making the townspeople know they were fakes. in the NES version, they thought YOU were the fakes, if I remember correctly.
