Posted on 11-16-06 12:29 AM, in my personal review(and my friends') of the Zune Link
despite everything negative people say about it, I can only see goodness from this player.
I have not had one problem with it yet.

The install went by smooth, and gave me no errors. Video quality is surprisingly good. So is the audio quality. The menu system seems perfect to me, and I prefer the analog joypad-style control to apples wheel (It just annoys me quite frankly).

whats more is that IT HAS NOT WRAPPED ALL MY MUSIC UP IN DRM. and it WONT.
I have already synched music to my zune, back to my pc, and to my other player, which plays it just fine.

from what Ive seen and read, the DRM is specific to music bought in the zune marketplace. The 3day/play thing is only for music sent to the inbox, which the device is set to only allow 3days/plays from. The song itself is not modified in any way.

as I said, video quality is good. WTF is with standards anyway (talking about H.264)? to my eye it looks the same, other than that, I dont give a flying ****. MP4 and WMA work good enough for me, and are easy to convert to.

sure, wireless mode is useless, so I keep it off.

on battery power -- I cannot see myself ever using it up. Heck, with my music usage/free time, I only have about 2-3 hours a day to listen. Even on overnight wrestling trips I'll be going on, I can see one charge lasting me 3+ days. heck, I only went to half power on a barely charged battery today, while presenting it to people in school.

if you listen to enough music to constantly run out of battery power, you'll probably be deaf before you can recharge the thing.

the it factor- surprisingly enough, the zune DOES HAVE THE IT FACTOR WITH YOUTH. I can prove it! People all around me thought the player was awesome. this proves my previous assumption was correct -- 99.9% of iPod users only have an iPod because the think it is the only/best player, and their friends have one. I had crowds of people wanting to see it play video/audio, and they we extremely satisfied with what they got. I might have just shifted the paradigm in my area -- but believe me it was not intentional (I pulled it out to play a song for myself -- the crowd came to ME).

people who see it on tv are also drawn in. I had no idea this would happen, I assumed the zune would fail totally. Now I see there is actually going to be (at least a little) chance for MS to get a decent amount of sales out of this.

with updateable firmware, the possibilities of this device are endless. I can see a slew of new features (official and hacked) come out of this player. not to mention improvements.

I have to say, Im totally satisfied with my purchase. If I had any problems, believe me Id be yelling my pants off for buying the thing -- I was worried I would -- but I havent had a single problem (aside from the fact that Windows media player screwed up some song names, but that has nothing to do with the zune player)

radio support is.. iffy. It works, and 100% at that, but it doesnt have as powerful an antenna as the SanDisk devices out there -- they pick up a bit better.

mp3s/wmas play as good as/better than my PC (I have a realtek integrated so no big feat). Id say quality is better than SanDisk models, and as good/better than iPod, aside from that, I have used no other players, so I cannot judge.

for the design factor -- I really like the look actually (of the black one, its the one I bought) white seems to look nice, and brown... is unique. Although I believe the look they were going for in brown was retro (wood-paneling style), but it just doesnt work.

the players look awesome with the double-shot (traslucent colored plastic on the front, right over the black/white/brown) the black/blue combo is cool.

overall though, many people like the iPods look better, I personally dont.

headphone quality is as good as can be expected. they are great headphones (earbuds actually), but if you go out and spend $100+ on headphones, they're obviously going to sound better. The magnets are totally useless, but fun to play with if your bored in class .

charging time via USB wasnt long, and song transfer rates were quite speedy. short videos (less than an hour) seem to convert at a decent pace (could be faster) and play at pretty much equal quality (aside from some resizing, which seems to be done quite nicely) I converted Star wars episode 3 for teh zune, and it took about 1:45 (maybe 1:55)
to get on the player. It came out at good quality (great, if you consider that I ripped it to a >700MB file before converting) to the file I ripped from the DVD.

I'd say it was excellent, but the zune converter seems to have a hard time converting big videos (by big I mean motion picture size) I only tried once, with the included converter, but even though quality was great, there were points it would skip, or give me a full screen of green (as if it were a CD skipping, but with a color).

this seems more to be an issue with the copy of Ep. 3 I ripped. I have already converted it 3-4 times, so it probably just lost a LOT of quality that last time. I have converted countless videos already (a bunch of red vs. blue stuff -- I think its a funny series) and this has not happened to any of them. they all play excellently. Game trailers also play nicely.

picture quality is very good. even the zoom works without any distortion (and my oblivion background looks nice-- the zune zooms in right on the oblivion character [a guard, looks like] to make it an excellent wallpaper)

It is an excellent device for storing/showing off photos.

more on the controls -- let me put it this way: I had an idea how to control the thing before I even bought it/read anything. take a guess what the darn buttons do -- its not that hard. I figured it all out while eating at taco bell last night. wasnt rocket science.
up=volume up down=volume down, left= rewind/skip back, right=fast forward/skip forward, play/pause=play pause, back=back, and middle= OK hold play/pause at the menu to turn it off.

I am already fluent at controlling it, switching quickly between settings/songs/movies/pictures seemlessly and easily using only one hand to hold and a thumb to control.

it is about the same width as my external floppy drive -- which isnt really that thick, but it seems so when compared to an ipod (or one of the many flash based devices out today). It is about the same size (thickness) as the older generation of iPods, and height, believe it or not, seems comfortable with the player. I wouldnt want to watch videos on the thing if it was any smaller -- it seems comfortable to watch is all I can say.

The operating system looks very much like the media center mode on my PC -- which I live very much. The album art is a nice addition to the menus, and even though its a bit stretched, to the screen itself while playing music.

The whole DRM thing is simple -- dont buy music with DRM unless you plan to stick with your player. Same goes for iPod or anything else. You cant play playsforsure or zune media on an ipod, ipod / zune media on a plays for sure, and etc.

this problem has nothing to do with zune so much as (pretty much) all music companies trying to hook you in. Even DRM free players will not be capable of playing DRM music so wtf.

Shareza is my ticket to unlimited music now ($0 for a lifetime! only at the cost of a few broken laws!) and even if I had money to shell out, I would only buy from places without DRM. so long as Im DRM free, I can use any player I want. 90% of the people I know use limewire anyway. if you dont, then it was poor judgement on your part, and its your fault you cant leave your iPod/playsforsure device/zune. You bought into a companies DRM, and basically signed a pact with them in blood.

stripping DRM wont get you caught anyway.

Im not even using my 14 days free unlimited zune marketplace downloads. why? DRM. even if its free, the DRM is still there.

thats all I can think of right now, but if you have any questions you want answered (or rumors/myths proven/busted) just ask. But keep in mind, this is only the experiance I have had.

as stated by many others, it would appear the typical (unknowledgable in the area of computers) consumer actually likes a tight integrated system. Why? because it's easier for them. Heck, some people don't even understand how a flash drive works (I almost laughed at the girl Im talking about)

I do have one positive for this-- the zune will most likely run on Dell Computers because of this. Dell PCs Don't allow many hardware not made by Dell to function (at all) on the PC. For example, My Friends Dell refuses to recognise SanDisk players, but his Dell DJ works fine.

I also wanted to add on to my review a bit. charging is an issue for me -- not because there is a problem with it, but because the zune refuses to charge from my PC while the power is off (on the PC). I think this is a motherboard/power source issue though (sounds like it doesnt output power via usb while the machine isnt running). My question is: if it is a hardware issue, why do my speakers still turn on/off (also USB powered) without the computer being on?

Id also like to mention that you CAN USE THE ZUNE WHILE CHARGING. many reviews state that you cant, this is simply an error on their part. If you plug in the zune without loading the software, it will still take a charge without going to the connected screen. You can use your zune as normal like this, but it might not charge as fast.

more on my first point -- I agree with you in my own opinion, but we must both accept that we left the realm of normal users (probably even beyond power-user if your like me) a long time ago. Our needs and desires are different than the general public, and whether or not we know more/better, society as a whole doesn't.

I think a major part of the whole software thing is just to replace windows media player for the zune user. Windows media player ties in with MSN music (playsforsure) and Zune is tied to the zune marketplace instead. both are pretty much the same feature wise.

I think that may be the problem -- my speakers are powered, as well as my (PS2) keyboard and other USB devices -- just not this one...

though Im not sure how to (safely) increase the power output of my (430 watt) power source to do anything about it.

Posted on 11-20-06 01:10 AM, in repartitioning windows XP without a reinstall Link
Im thinking about installing Linux on this machine to coexist with Media center, but should I screw up, I'll be totally screwed.

see, I'm not sure I can fix things if the repartition goes wrong like last time, and Windows XP Media Center will not allow me to boot into it.

last time I tried to repartition a Windows XP machine (My Friends old dell) I had to reinstall windows because it gave him an error message at boot up because I changed the amount of space on the NTFS partition that stored XP.

this is my new PC, and I absolutely, positively, (cant get this across enough) NEED WINDOWS ON THIS PC. not only for games, but because others in this household paid for it, and don't really want linux on it (but Im gonna use a boot disk, and nobody will be wise enough to check HD space)

so my question is -- how can I resize my XP Media Center NTFS Partition and still be able to boot up to windows without getting an error message.

I am running an eMachines T6536 with a new 240 watt power supply and GeForce 7900 GT OC PCIe graphics card from BFG Tech.

allow me to explain more logically:

I want to take, say, 40-80 gigs from this partition (believe me, I have enough space)

I then want to change Windows XP's settings to realise this as normal (i.e. it will still boot up and run fine with no errors)

I cannot repeat CANNOT have to reinstall windows XP. If I have to do this, it's not a worthwhile venture.

depends on your distro. I'll be installing slackware.

I guess I'll try a repartition with PAUD and ntfsresize tonight, and if all does not go well...
I'll be making backups anyway. I'm going to look for a program to make recovery disks, and if this is not at all possible, I guess I'll have to do a clean reinstall of windows and put in my backup files.

to be honest, I may just use my older machine (already has slackware on it) instead of bothering with this at all. I wont be able to go on the internet with it anyway (at all). I have AOL right now for one, and for 2, its a data/fax PCI modem (winmodem) that will be a b*tch to get working (if at all possible -- its a newer modem, and a driver might not exist yet).

so is this really worth it? Ito be honest, I just want to see how great linux is on my newer more powerful machine, and Dial-up prevents me from getting knoppix or the like. I bought a set of slackware 12 cds a couple months ago.

Posted on 11-23-06 04:59 PM, in some hardware questions Link
I had an old compaq lying around (about 1-2Ghz, 256mb ram, 40GB hard drive) so I decided to take it apart and use the HD.

but I have a few questions:

1: can I use teh 32Mx6SDRAM its made by infineon and the model # is HYS64V32300GU-7.5-C2 ? I have two computers -- one already has a gig (I dont think I can use less than a one GB ram chip) on an emachines T6536, the other is an OLD HP pavilion with 64MB of ram in total (thats the one I'd like to use it on). might the compaq chip still work with it, or is it a nonstandard part?

2: I have retrieved the 40GB Seagate HDD it is Model ST340810A. Is there anyway I can add this as an extra HD to my Emachines t6536 -- I really want to install slackware on this HD as a secondary OS. If so, then how would I install it? Im not switching it out with my current HD, I want it as a secondary. Would I need to increase voltage from my Power Supply? a link to a tutorial for this would be great. If not possible, I'll temporarily swap it with my current HD and format to use with my modded XBOX.

also, is there any use to the old motherboard/250 watt power supply I have in my basement now? should I save them? They can't be worth too much. and if I cant use the ram in either PC, is there any other use for it?

thanks in advance

edit:

I already installed the SeaGate HDD successfully on my own.

I've done WinModem Installations before, but never have I actually established a usable connection to AOL.

Im using Peng (dont have the necessary dependencies on this old slackware box for linspires new dialer -- hopefully this will change when I get my new mandriva disks)

the connection is a bit slow(26Kb/sec dialup instead of 52), but changing a few settings/init strings might change that.

Im just surprised I can even get online... gives me hope that Linux may be my primary OS again one day...

edit:

enabling full duplex got me a better, faster connection...

as for getting another ISP -- I'm working on it -- my parents pay for it, and I don't have a choice (we're only using it because I got a 6 month trial with my new PC...)

After the trial runs out (in a month or 2) I'm going to call my local phone company (they offer 256K DSL), and see how much it costs. If it's anything comparable to dial-up ($12-$20 a month) I'll probably get that, as its only them (frontier high-speed online) or my cable company (was Adelphia, now Time Warner).

The problem is, I'm poor, and anything over $15 a month is really pushing it for my family, to the point where we'd have no food. So cable is completely out (its almost $50 a month).

so I'll have to find a new ISP thats dial-up if frontier's service is too expensive (how much [- installation fee] could a 256k connection cost? 1.x Mb is 50, so I'd imagine it to be around $15-$20)

and also, it was a challenge. I had to do it. I've solved multiple other networking scenarios myself, and this was just a point on the path to becoming the most 31337 sysadmin ever (j/k) But it was an educational experience though.

and now I'm not forced to use windows as my primary OS anymore! Its secondary now!
I just cant wait until my mandriva disks get here... I'm eager to try out the newest kernel, and Slackware 10.2 has no modules compiled for it, and no source for it, so I cant get it to work with anything but 2.4...

okay, well its not THAT bad in terms of income. The problem is my parents Debts, which they are taking care of.

things the way they are now are affordable, it's just that if another $50 a month was added, it would add undue stress that would cause the situation to become that much worse.

$50 itself isn't that bad, but when its paid for on a credit card that takes the $50 you send and pays for other things first, it becomes $100s per month on top of car payments (really high) and otherwise.

Actually, by sometime this/next year, I WILL be getting Cable broadband, either when the car payments are up (1-1.5 years) or when I get a job (whenever I can find one& get transportation).

see, we're not close to living on the street. not close at all. but we could be if more financial stress was added.

about a wireless card -- my neighbor upstairs has dial-up too (AOL), and I don't know the other neighbors, but I don't think a wireless card will reach the next house over, and I'm not even sure if they have a wireless router (or internet at all, for that matter).

all I know is that my DS can't find any connections, and I'm pretty sure my PC won't either. Oh, I wish it was possible to steal T1 from my school across the street. even if I could, they turn off the computers when schools out anyway. lol.

this is sort of a bump, but I just gotta say...
makes me feel proud my old mod is still being used/looked for/wanted.

thats assuming it is the zenny hack I wrote years ago (with help from weasel and Tuvai)

those were the days, back when there was an acmlmboard hack forum (before they changed it to programming, and then finally removed it).

anyway, if you want to make your own, it isn't very hard once you get the hang of PHP.
basically you'll need to create a table/row (or add a row to an existing table) in your MySQL Database, then add a new box to the user profile php file, and finally add in the zenny info under usernames/wherever you want.

the hard part is trying to find a use for the zenny (store/etc.) tuvai's store was never released (though it was 100% compatible with my zenny hack) and Im not sure where weasel's old hack is, if it even works with new acmlmboards.

thats all I can help, I'm afraid. kinda makes me wish it was 4-5 years ago again...

Posted on 12-09-06 01:32 AM, in *sigh* the times are changing... (rant) Link
I guess it was inevitable, but everything seems to have changed in the world...

zophar's domain (the greatist emulation site ever) was announced dead by it's owner, the dreamcast development scene is (seemingly) stagnent... at this point 3-4 years ago, we expected full-speed genesis and SNES emulation on it, maybe even N64/Sega Saturn! but that never happened, did it?

more than that, all the once great rom sites (aside from emu paradise -- not linking to it, I know, Its illegal) seem to be gone, and the few that still exist peddle around PD roms.

maybe it is illegal, but hey, there was a time when we could download music/games for free kiddies, it may have been against the law, but we did it. and it was a LOT easier to do than today. back then, every fanpage had a rom on it. every site (as well as the original napster)
had MP3s.

as far as filesharing goes, kazaa light is no longer usable. It just wont connect. Bittorrent just isnt the same, better or worse, its still different.

most of the sites I once went to are gone... sites like megaman universe (dang, that MMXZ had some great graphics skills.) are gone, but Sonic HQ and Dcemulation are, surprisingly, still around. sites like GameFAQs have just plain changed. Gamewinners hasnt changed for as long as I can remember, and it still remains teh same, at least.

the sonic cartoon which many considered the greatist (SaTam) has been gone for over 10 years (I kinda miss watching it as a kid)

I've lost hope in them ever continuing the Megaman Legends series (It ROCKED) and ever actually giving a conclusion to the X or Original sagas. ZX just isnt the same for me.
Heck, I hated zero's takeover in MMZ, and they just go and kill him too. oh well.

Genecyst is no longer the greatist genesis emulator, and hasnt been for awhile. I remember it's sickly gruesome GUI (the version I got had a bloody hand as a cursor)...

heck, sega doesnt even make consoles anymore (really a disappointment to me), adn their games seem to be loosing quality now that Sammy has bought out a majority of their stock.

things have changed in my real life as well. I quit wrestling -- I didnt feel like being a dumba** anorexic. seriously, thats what those guys do. starve themselves, take laxitives to lose weight (some are on steriods too), and dehydrate to lose weight as well.

1 salad a day isnt enough for a 16 yo guy. heck, they wanted me at 112, Im 16, male, about 5'8". thats not healthy. I ate (a full) dinner 2 nights before a match, and told coach I was quitting. now im training year-round to be (a good) runner.

im not a little kid anymore either. I can remember back before I knew anything about computers. I've come a loooong way. longer than many ever believed I could, and I plan to go farther. I can remember when I was an 11y/o lying about his age (COPPA Laws) so he could post on web-forums. My parents were paranoid of the internet then. they know nothing of computers, and are ignorant on the subject.

just think, if I didnt break their rules while they slept, I might never have posted a message on a forum! to be honest, I had no friends for a long time, and forums were the only places I could chat with real people outside of school then.

I remember my first dream, back on an old HP Pavilion (which I still have) with 644MHz and 64MB(I think) Ram. had windows ME on it. It was to program my own RPG. so I started learning qbasic... I left it and went back to it many times, eventually accepting it was worthless. I never accomplished that dream (yet). Then I started to use RapidQ (like visual basic, hasnt been an active project for years now) for GUI Development. I made a small suite of programs to help teach others HTML with it, called HTML Check. essentially, it was a quiz-type application to see if you knew your HTML. I made about 5-6 (maybe more, I cant remember) versions of it.

I then moved on to web programming. at first I knew nothing and used Geocities' site-builder. then I decided to learn HTML. I was a fool and thought I could make an HTML forum (LOL) ! (hey, I was like 11 and never really had any access to the internet or a computer before). So, after getting laughed at, I learned HTML. then, thirsting for more power I leared some basic PHP. went back and learned CSS while I was at it.

I also learned much more about PHP through the source code for PHPBB and ACMLMboard 1.7/1.8. I remember when we expected 2.0 to be released by christmas over 2-3 years ago... that happened. lol.

I moved on to create a new site, with a custom coded layout (not too nice, but it was my own) and custom CMS. I never did code a forum, but it was always a dream I used to have.

then, I learned C/C++. not like the last few times though, this time I went into it deep. I started with C/C++ and Allegro, and now use SDL. several times I have come close to completing a phalanx-style shooter, but each time my code/graphics get erased through probelms that require me to reformat my HDD (XP decided not to boot last time, and linux was not yet installed on this machine)

I lost all my code (over 3 or 4 pages of more than 100+ lines of code each and a custom header file w/ global variables and custom functions + graphics for the player, enemies, backgrounds, and a menu).

I dont think I'll start that again. too much work was lost last time, and I hit a bump that totally halted development for more than 2 months. I have, however, coded many nonsense applications in C, and a few semi-useful ones.

the only useful app (other than my ancient HTML Check... I dont even think it exists anymore, anywhere, not on any server, though Im gonna look now that I remember it)
is a small, command-line calculator, which I also have lost the source code for. though creating a calculator is beyond easy.

outside of computers, my life has seemed to remain stagnant. nothing new has happened to me since I was about 11 or 12, and that was the internet and computer access. Im 16, and know as little about love/relationships as a 10 year old, which I see as pathetic (and believe me, I do beat myself up over it). Trust me, Im very hard on myself. I dont have much money, and no job right now. no real direction in life either -- I just dont feel as though I have any reason to work hard.

all that stuff just adds on to the nostalgia. a week ago, I found myself dialing into old MSN DUNs (hacked dial-up accounts) even though I knew they hadnt worked since 02 (or earlier). I did it just so I could remember the good 'ol times getting free internet access for my dreamcast.

but aside from that, I guess Im looking for change. change in myself. It seems the world didnt wait for me after all, and it's already changed, for better or for worse, on it's own.

I find myself wanting to change who I am. physically, socially, morally, and mentally. I realise that a lot of what I do/think is wrong. I need to gain weight. and I need to mature mentally too. I also need to remove this huge block on my shoulders -- im not sure why its there, but it puts me so deep in thought that Im locked into my own world in my mind. it slows down my reaction time to things, as Im not paying attention, and makes me appear a lot stupider than I am (I have an IQ of over 130 -- dont remember it exactly, but its somewhere between 130 and 150).

and also,(this is beyond off topic) I have severe short term memory problems. It has been damaged badly for some reason since my birth. I compensate for putting most important info in my long-term memory (nice, because I can fall asleep and haev teh memory waiting for when I wake, and I dont need to study for tests), however I often repeat myself and tell the same story 100 times.

so the times have changed. the world is a different place. for better or worse, this is the way things are. I cant go back, and I guess I've accepted that I need to change along with the times...

I know I went way off topic a bunch of times, but oh well. just typing out whatever I thought/felt. Im going to (try) to write some poetry and maybe an essay or two now that Im done here. comment/complain/call me an idiot if you wish. and if this post is too long, feel free to delete it/move it/lock it.

Posted on 12-09-06 09:43 PM, in I want some c/c++ practice projects. Link
meh, I installed a c/c++ compiler (borland, this time) on windows again (had to format that HD) and I still have GCC on linux (mandriva). I might download VC++.net tonight, but I probably wont get the x86 devkit with it if I do -- dialup sucks...

I am kind of rusty though, and I just cant think of any program I need right now, so I want some kind of project to start to help me resharpen my skills, and maybe even learn a thing or 2.

so can some of you guys show me or set me up with some practice projects?

try to use only the base c/c++ libraries and [maybe] win32 (not good with win32 API at all -- I dont even remember it...)

start out with some simple things (albeit more complex than hello world), but after that, I'm sure I can handle some more advanced stuff...

I've been looking on google, but I couldnt find anything like this...

Posted on 12-09-06 10:12 PM, in I need to gain weight. Link
I look like I'm borderline anorexic. Problem is I already eat plenty. Lots of meals + lots of junk food.

I'm about 5'8" tall, male, and 16 years old. I should be about 135-145 lbs, but I'm only about 115 lbs. I'm VERY strong (for my size), so most of what I have is muscle (barely any fat at all), but I look so pathetic and weak (and unattractive) due to my low weight that my strength does not matter.

my wrists have a full half inch of space around them if I put two fingers around them, and the rest of my body follows suit. My Pex and shoulders look about average, so I just look strange without a shirt on. my arms get noticeably smaller on the way down, and I look like Im a flat chested girl because my stomach has very little fat on it and I have a pex.

I need to slow down my metabolism -- food passes through me like water (even proteins). If I eat breakfast, Im almost crapping my pants during the first block of classes. I can eat eight pizzas and barely gain an ounce.

hell, every night I lose about 3 pounds in my sleep!!!

any ideas on how I can gain some weight? I want to get weight gain supplements, but thats not an option for awhile.

doctors said I have a short term memory deficiency when I was a kid. heh... I forgot what I was saying there -- took me about 3 minutes to remember the word "deficiency". lol.

I dont have ADD though (even though people said I had ADHD).

I can pay attention well (and multitask), as long as I sleep enough that is (Ive been staying up all night and falling asleep in class recently). Not only that, but when I DID take medication, it made me pay less attention, hyper, and forget more.

in essence, all the ADD drugs Ive taken have actually caused me to have ADD. Ive taken over 20 types of medication from the time I was 5-10. Only one I remember is riddlen, but if someone mentioned more names, Im sure Id remember.

second I stopped taking them, all the problems were gone (except for the memory). I have a good mind to think that it is actually the drugs that damaged my memory.

you see, I only know what Ive been told, and I myself cannot remember much about 11 years ago. at least not enough to tell you how good my memory was.

Koneko, I have to say, I totally agree with you. too bad Im a guy (lol j/k)

anyway, I have to say, stuff like this does affect guys. Its mostly harmless stuff. A lot of the guys who're my teammates shave a *lot* (more than just down there... a little on behind, the legs, chests, maybe even their backs) I'll say right now I shave my area, but thats it. the leg/chest hair stays. (mine is REALLY thick too. Im an ape.)

some take steriods -- thats where it gets dangerous. I know 2 or 3 guys like this.

on the girl end of things, I agree with you all.

problem is, people these days are stupid. I find that most guys are told to like a certain thing, so they just listen to it.

hell, these days people ONLY date for sex, and not for a relationship, so they end up getting divorced and miserable because they marry someone they only like, mistaking it for love because they never gave a **** about their partner at all before.

I also find that women (yes, in general) seek out destructive and dangerous relationships rather than stable ones.

I tried to get someone to go out with me not long ago, and she decided to go out with an extremely violent drug-addict the same day. She said he was sweet because he said he'd "Quit pot" for her. (and shes one of the smartest girls in my town)

I also know a 15 year old who just got pregnant and doesnt know who the father is.

there were like 20 girls who were desperately trying to set me up with someone a month ago. but this isnt your blind-date type of thing, it was aggresive. we had like 50 people trying to force us to go out, and we didnt want to. Hell, almost everyone I know (some guys included, they think I should just use her for sex and leave) is still trying on this.

I have more stories too, but this isnt the time or place...

jesus christ, I hate stupid people. There should be a common sense test, and failures she be sentenced to death.

for one, I believe this belongs in the rom hacking forum, and for two, I'm pretty sure the admins wont like your huge image-filled signature... just an early warning...

to post in the rom hacking forums, you need to ask for approval now first.

I am assuming this game is one you, yourself, did not create. That would make it rom hacking as opposed to programming

Posted on 12-12-06 12:46 AM, in finding/editing specific lines from a text file in C++ Link
Okay, Im unveiling my new project with this help request, I guess...

Im writing a little application to edit oblivion.ini for you (and back it up/restore it). It will be a .NET application (for now, I can download the Windows SDK in 2 months when I get broadband. yes, Im getting a job and 768k broadband when AOL runs out, its a miracle)
As I am using Visual C++ express (I HATE coding the win32 GUI myself, and know nothing about .NET, so it works for now. XP comes with .NET now, and thats what oblivion runs on)

anyway, I just need to know how to load up Oblivion.ini, and search for certain lines. Once those lines are found, the values need to be changed to enable/disable the tweaks. And if you didnt know, you can make the game more stable and/or heighten graphical ability (on water/etc) by editing the file.

I'm pretty sure C/C++ comes standard with a library that does this, I just havent used file i/o
outside of standard C (which seemed to be a mess to me. I could never get more than 1 word into text file), and even that was about 2 years ago. But if it doesn't (I may very well be wrong) please direct me to a library that can...

edit:

OK, Ive found fstream, but I cant figure out for the life of me how to seek out and replace a line in the text file. ie:

bAllow30Shaders=0
to
bAllow30Shaders=1

Any help would be great, because once I figure this out, I'll be in the home stretch, and the program will be easy to complete.

AB is a lot simpler than PHPBB/Vbulletin(
while diving into code and screwing around is a great way to learn, you should start with something simpler and cleaner.

And a reference book on PHP/MySQL (your local library might actually have a few on PHP and other languages as well... mine does.) would be very helpful in explaining things you can't figure out by editing.

A printed tutorial could also suffice.

I dunno, I just learned better at first that way. Now I dive into code (usually with c/c++) and figure out what things do by fooling around. It all depends on your initial learning style. Once you get the basics down, I find editing other code is a great way to learn.

some of the code I've been trying to get to work since last night compiled perfectly.

also, I plan to finally get 768k Cable Broadband in about 2 months (if nothing bad happens financially) when my AOL trial runs out. Can't wait to do some Quake 4 fragging.
