you guys should see me while Im programming, or better yet, a couple minutes ago when I was making my new dev team site....

I had 4 workspaces (Im using linux) full to the brim with about 3 text editors (in each) Mozilla(with about 5 tabs on it), bluefish (HTML/Web script editor) The gimp (a window management task on it's own), a couple terminals, GFTP, Konqueror, thunar (file manager), and thats about it.

I've had more running though.
I must say, Slackware seems to bring out all the power on my 1.3GHZ machine. There are times when I use soooo many apps, that pretty much any other OS would crash (maybe not BSD) .

I've checked the gentoo site, and Ive searched via google, and come up with a bunch of gentoo articles, but no answer to my question.

what software comes on the gentoo i686 livecd/installer?

I have dial-up (yes, gentoo is usable on dialup if you move downloaded source to the correct directory before running emerge), and dont want to spend countless hours downloading software that isnt included.

it's eitehr this, or I just get an updated version of slackware (mine is hopelessly outdated)

Im probably just going to get the slackware 10.2 4 cd set (from edmunds-enterprises.com though, theirs is the same but cheaper)

Im tied to much to slackware to see it go I guess... not to mention the livecd/installer is the only one currently available for x86 platforms (for gentoo) any way... and you cant get ANY from their store...

oh, I shouldve mentioned -- Im buying a copy, Im not tieing up my phone line for 3-4 days on a 56kbit connection...

if you DO have mysql set up, did you edit /lib/config.php ?

thats where all the login info is stored (aboard has no automated installer like phpBB).
you have to edit that (don't worry, it's pretty easy) so it connects to your database.

Posted on 07-18-06 12:19 PM, in I am VERY concerned about the direction of society now... Link
I just read about the church of the subgenius now, and it leads me to be VERY worried about society. Please note that if you are in a "religion" (hereafter to be referred to as cult) like this, you will be offended to no end.

people dumb enough to believe in something like that... will definitely hurt the world to say the least. I realize this is an old religion, but along with scientology and other cults, this is seriously a problem.

how can our society LET people take advantage of those... less intelligent?
freedom of religion can (and must) be limited. they limited speech (through censorship) and they can make up a term to do it to religion as well...

it is obvious that people who started these only want money.

I know this may seem offensive (me calling people idiots and all) but please, read the descriptions for these cults first;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_SubGenius
http://www.subgenius.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology

you may ask what the difference between these and other religions are:
it is simple -- not only have religions been practiced for centuries, but at least they try (or did try) to put real meaning in life rather than make excuses for why aliens did not abduct them.

this brings me to another point:

how can anyone (with the exception of the mentally slow or ill) be dumb enough to believe this garbage. If when I die, I go to hell (Im an athiest, so that will be surprise to me enough) and I see some dude with a pipe give me $90 bucks and sell me a book for $89.95, I'll go straight to the devil himself and ask for a light (which is even more surprising because I dont smoke).

what are your thoughts on this?

Posted on 07-20-06 09:09 AM, in thinking about getting a gaming PC... Link
Im sick of all the new consoles every 5 years -- so Im doing something about it. I want to go 100% PC Gamer instead.

Im trying to build a PC around Oblivion (yes, laugh all you want) and then just upgrade from there when I need a new graphics card/processor/etc.

I looked at alienware, and I can get what I need for $733 after rebate and before $130 shipping (<- WOW) I *think* dell offers free shipping, and from them for about $730-$760(I forgot which, maybe a bit more or less) on a Dimension E510 with ATI X600 (enough ram in it to run oblivion, and I know its not the newest card) a gig of normal DDR ram. 3GHz intel dual core processor, 17" HD monitor, decent sound card, and pretty much all I need + a $150 rebate which brings it down into the $600s which is definitely nice.

my question is is this ATI card integrated to the mother board? I didnt look at the lower end because it said it was integrated.

I went to best buy, and they had a decent custom machine for $999 for only the PC itself (no monitor, etc... mines an old CTR, and I dont know if newer PCs support it...)

there was also an Emachines with a 3.2 GHz AMD processor and an (integrated) nvidia card for $4?? (5-600 in a bundle) would it be cheaper to buy that and have the graphics card and power source installed (my parents REFUSE to let me do the upgrades myself -- even though they ARE SIMPLE)?

games I plan to get are:
oblivion (Im an RPG fanatic -- lots of PC RPGs will be played in the future)
quake 4
Empire at war
Wal-Mart bargains (yes, I'll be quite poor after this, and these will make up a majority of my games... jk lol)

Im trying to make this UNDER $1000. I dont have much money, and I *REALLY* dont want my parents to get into a TON of debt (high interest rates+little $$$ = bad)

if there is anything meeting my criteria online (and good price) I'll look into that too -- but all I find on amazon is barebones PCs with no warranty (another pain, my parents are forcing me to have a warranty -- they dont understand that no $$$ = no choice)

Id really hate to get rid of my slackware box, but would it still be cheaper to get a mother board, new HD, graphics card+power source, RAM, Windows XP, etc -- basically a new PC without any drives or a monitor?

I know nothing about the PC gaming world -- Id always thought it would be out of my price range (and it is, really), but looking at the price of the PS3 ($500), I think Id rather get a new graphics card next year for $689 than buy an XBox 3, PS4, Or nintendo whatever for $7-800. I say we dont even need new consoles for another 10 years -- there is so much untapped potential in the old ones (usb ports, other ports) that could update the consoles power -- they only make new ones for more cash.

any ideas?

how will this perform (it's $977 shipped)

[1] Area-51® 3500

Processor: Intel® Pentium® D Processor 805 w/ Dual Core Technology 2.66GHz 533MHz FSB

for now, I can use my old CRT monitor (never really cared about high-def), and my old speakers (fine, seeing as it's integrated audio anyway)

my goal right now is to *get games running well* not perfect, though thats the max graphics card alienware offers on the area-51's, so if it *DOSENT* run games well, I'll piss myself.]

but it's cheaper than what you find in stores, and packs more of a punch for graphics (the card is *well above* most games *reccommended stats*)

Ok, I ended up buying a system with this:

AMD 3800+ Processor
GeForce 7900 GT OC (Single card) (256MB ram)
1 GB ram
250GB HD
17" Flat panel monitor

I figure you guys dont need the other specs, but it does a pretty good job for gaming -- runs oblivion at the highest res. (1280x1024) with anti-aliasing at 4 samples. ATI cards can rin aa with HDR, I know, but I bought the card at best buy, and the only ATI card I saw there was more expensive. Bloom with AA looks good enough any way. Quake also looks nice, though I can't go to ultra high gfx because my card < 512MB, but they can be customized a bit above high and run full speed.

I figure (should I ever need it) a new card, 1GB Ram and a new processor (though the 3800+ is pretty good) can't go above $600... and eventually I'll build a better system anyway. (In about 3-4 years)

Posted on 07-31-06 01:29 AM, in what sports are you involved with/play? Link
well, I was just thinking about how I have practice starting soon, and I was wondering:
what sports do the guys at acmlm's board play?

personally I'm a wrestler in the winter (I was JV last year, and I probably will be this year too.) I also run cross country in the fall, and track in the spring (though I don't like it at all, and I might not this year.)

wrestling is my favorite sport (real wrestling, not that crap you see on WWF, or whatever they all it now) period. It's an honorable sport -- much like an arena, but nobody dies (you can get seriously injured, esp. if your opponent is hyped up on steroids, I've seen it happen) "It's a fight with rules" as one of my coaches put it. Im not that good at it, but I'm not the worst in the world, I've won my share of matches.

cross country is actually kind of fun -- You can be slow as all hell and still not come in last -- there are people who walk! I guess its fun because you really dont have to try -- although I still do, because the exercise of a 3-4+ mile run is good. Also there are some cute girls on the team . lol.

track is... well... hard. thats my fault though. I show some potential as a runner, but I dont put enough effort forth in training -- I just dont feel like it. Im lazy, and can play video games instead. If I really tried, I could be good, but I without lots of conditioning It absolutely kills me to do the running. Oh yeah, for track, I do long distance (800 +, usually the 1 or 2 mile.)

so what about you guys/gals?

Posted on 08-01-06 12:38 AM, in would you fight for your beliefs if it meant death? Link
If tommorrow, the government of your country or aliens or whatever else took away everything you believe in, would you fight, even if you knew it meant death? Would you make that final symbolic stand, even if it was you and you alone against an army of thousands?

My mind always shifts to this concept. I constantly see there are many people (in the world entirely) who speak of philosophies and beliefs, but would do nothing to protect them -- that would as soon forget them as they spoke their words.

If everything I believed in was taken away, I'd fight to the death against any opponent, even if everybody else just watched me die. I'd personally know that I tried, and hope that I (in the words of FF) "spread the seeds of the future".

it is for this that I show respect for Isreal, and for so-called terrorist orgranizations. I dont agree with them, but in a world where there are no more revolutionaries, they demand respect.

I could most closely be compared to a Chaotically just/good Neverwinter Nights character. I would (and actually have in the past) stand up for my beliefs no matter the consequence; and I HAVE paid dire prices for those incidents. I've lost my dignity, my honor, been made a fool of, and have come close to being (physically) injured.

I speak what I think, with no censorship. Sometimes there are consequences. But even if I have to die to defend them, I will. And I'll have one final breath -- one with personal honor and dignity. At least I'll know that I never gave up, and that I died because I did not change for society, and they weren't going to change for me.

I think I constantly misrepresent myself, and have constantly made myself look like an evil psychopath on this board, hopefully this clears that up, adn shows what I think in a clearer light.

would you fight/die for you freedoms? Even if it was you alone, while the whole world watched (and disagreed)? I would.

was it rom requests? downright stupidity in general? like I said, I could care less, It's just piqued my curiosity a bit...

please take note that I am most definitely an elitest in favor of linux.

personally in my opinion:
linux>bsd(better for those who favor stability to power)>mac>other>DOS>windows

Im only using windows XP now because this is my new gaming PC (there are very few games that run on linux 100% fullspeed... oblivion for example) My main Dev Box has slackware 10.2 on it -- and I find that (even though it has 1Ghz[intel] power and 256mb RAM w/ integrated intel graphics/sound) it can sometimes run much more cleanly than my XP machine here with an AMD 3800+, 1024mb RAM, NVidia 7900GT OC (256mb RAM) (still integrated sound until next summer -- then Im finally buying Cable broadband (No more DIalup!!!), a sound card, and probably a dual-core AMD processor (maybe 3.2Ghz each...). I also want surround sound speakers, and more ram (at least 1GB, but probably 2 2gbs instead) though thats a bit pricey.

point is -- they're teh idiots who are like "OmGdZorZZZ WinDOZe VIsta is TeH 3dness OMIGODZ" even though you'll need at least 512mb ram for the operating system. thats TOO MUCH for an OS. Hell, I dont like the way that XP Media center takes up about 200-300+ ram (even though I have a gig +256 megs devoted to graphics), a good OS should take no more than 50mb. 90 megs tops. (Media Center can get close to 100 at startup if you disable EVERYTHING [including sound output])

not to mention that the fact that windows runs code that you may/may not have specific control of is one of the many reasons why viruses/spyware can run on it in the first place. heck, the first time I surfed teh web on this, I got about 50+ trojans, 10+worms, and a bunch of viruses.

I wish mac would come out with a system on an AMD processor -- if they got AMD to make a power mac (quad-core processor), I would go to heavan to have my ultimate linux/windows(games only)/mac box.

Would I risk death for someone I care about? It's easy to say yes, it's much harder to actually do it. Spiroth points out something I think is true; many people are hypocrites, or at least would go against their own beliefs when the moment comes due to fear. (In fact, many people I've talked to have beliefs that contradict themselves, and as such it'd be impossible for them NOT to be hypocrites at some point until they re-examine their beliefs. They aren't bad people necessarily, they just aren't very self-aware.)

Of course, EVERYONE is going to reply in this thread saying they'd definately die for something. Wether you should die for something is a belief in and of itself, and you most definately can be hypocritical about it. It's easy for me / Spiroth / sandrock to write that we'd die for something, but it's a lot harder to actually do it.

So... Would I die for any one person? Maybe if I really had someone I loved, but I have nobody like that in my life. Probably not.

Would I die for a huge sum of people I don't know? Good question.

yeah I guess your right for the most part -- I was mostly thiking about hypocrits while I wrote the initial post.

the whole "death" part was about the larger, more important beliefs. Like, if tommorrow you were going to be sold into slavery (Im pretty sure nobody believes in that as a good thing), would you try to make a stand, knowing that you probably had no chance? stuff like that.

it's not like Im saying "hey suicide bomb your leader because of taxes", but after rereading my post, I can see how it was interpreted that way.

BTW, Im a history buff, and I don't think I've ever heard of an underlying cause to the revolutionary war -- but it does make sense. was it the trade restrictions? I'll have to look that up...

but I've never touched on the subject of 3D before. Heck, I dont even know how to use modeling software correctly .

but how hard is it, exacly, to go through teh mechanics of making stuff with OGL? Stuff like collisions: do I have to implement my own collision detection system? I'd imagine it would be a bit easier than a 2d collision system. what about camera angles?

how about animations? making the models/textures? and how complex is the code going to be?

Im pretty much clueless to all this stuff.

it's great to power my nVidia card/other peripherals, but I was wondering if there was any way I could JUST play music without the need for excessive power (dont want a high electric bill )

is there any way? some program available on the web or something?

edit:

I know you can do something like:
int rande;
rande = rand()%100;
but then your integer is ALWAYS changing.

lets say Im working with SDL/Allegro/DirectX. I want to draw an enemy sprite to the screen at a random y or x value. If I use an int with rand or srand, I'll have an enemy randomly redraw itself forever should I use that int as my x/y value.

is there any way around this conondrum?

sure, I could just draw all the enemies outside the screen and have them move in like most games do, but thats not what Im looking for.

I just cannot think of a solution. No matter what I come up with, there just doesn't seem to be a way to have sprites drawn at random coordinates (that I can figure out at least).

well away mode itself is something Microsoft implemented in a select few manufacturers' mother boards.

Its not so much my OS as my motherboard.

Away mode doesnt save much power anyway, at least from what ive read. supposedly it just marks the user as away, and turns off screen output.

I've got over $100 coming back from best buy rewards, so I can just get an MP3 player if I really want it. (though an extra gig of ram might be nicer...)

not sure if this is in the right forum, but I just realised something about star wars episode 3.

in the scene where Windu duels Sidious, their lightsabers smash a window. Apparently the developers never caught this. They should have made Windu Hit it with the hilt if they wanted a window to smash, it would've been more realistic. Laser + glass = melt.

I just found this funny.
