whaaaaaaaaaat? so a hack with tons of koopas only, no interesting level ideas, out of place enemies, inconsistent difficulty level, bad use of BG movement (see his cave levels), long rows of koopas to jump on to pass a level, horrible usage of HDMA effects on water, sand and some castle levels, repetitive levels through worlds, near the ending the worlds and levels get painfully easy and short, some levels have narrow design, that means, too much objects and sprites together in small spaces, he doesnt know how to use the space of levels properly, piranha plants being shown outside of pipes because he cant set the level's mode right, constant slowdowns, annoying and bland levels, awful mix of gfx (a megaman gfx set with mario lava? wtf!) , red fireballs coming from black 'lava' pools, taking gfx from other hacks and not giving credits, does any of this make him an amazing level designer? He is an excellent ripper, but he is certainly not creative and is one of the worst level designers ever.

My votes go for BMF, Anikiti, peter, Juggling Joker and Guettoyouth.

looks amazing, just one problem though:

in this screen, , the BG looks weird, its half 3D-ish and half 2D. I think you should change the water gfx, since it doesnt fit with, that water gfx is from the FG, and it looks like theres a wall of water, it looks weird. Exchenge the water gfx for a waterfall one or make it look 3D-ish like the rest of background, that means, the water surface should be all over the water BG part and not only on top of it.

i think rips in general are pretty overused.

i do miss level only hacks like FPI's first one, containing tons of interesting level ideas and amazing level design. If you are going to use rips do like BMF: add ASM to it to change something on SMW and add new stuff.

Too much rips and few coding .

FPI was able to create new kinds of levels with only the original gfx, like:

-airships
-flying castles
-ice temples (check the ending of the stage "iceberg #2"
-ghost house's gardens

in fact, amazing level design. I have a huge respect for him because back in 2003 he was the main inspiration for my hack, i tried to follow what him and Sendy did on their hacks, so i think both are very important hackers.

i'm not being a brown nose here, but it is like music, each musician has an inspiration for their work, same thing here. I'd say i tried to follow FPI's and Sendy's models on my hacks, and was inspired by their kind of level design, with the difference that Sendy adds much more gfx to his hack.

I played it and enjoyed it a lot, some really original ideas within. But i complain about the last worlds: many final levels are too short and quite easy, like the lava cave ones. Anyway, it was a fun game. Nice job.

hey mikeyk, i am having a weird trouble. I added the sprites to my hack, via the "hackname" and "sprites.txt" thing, and successfully got the venus trap. I ripped the gfx and added to a level (level '103') as 1A and 3 (so it shoots 2 fireballs). Everything was perfect, the venus worked well, but something happened. A level at the third world of my hack (NOT the one with the venus trap, it has no sprite from your program on it) freezes on the "Mario Start" black screen. I dont know if it would matter, but it is level '6' as it is shown on the OW editor. The weird is that this happens only in this level, and i didn't add any sprites from the program in it, it just has the regular smw ones. I'd like to know how can i solve this (fortunately i backed up my rom before start using the program ). How can i avoid the level freezing on the black "Mario Start" screen that appears when Mario enters the level? Any help i'd be thanked, since i'd love to release a demo of my hack soon, and with those amazing sprites.

Hey mates im having a bad trouble with the falling spinny (the one thrown by Lakitu). Look at the attached screen taken from my hack, "Mario Legends".

As you see, the top right part of the thrown spinny has that black part that looks real ugly. I want to get rid of that. I checked the gfx and its alright, the gfx for the spinny is all correct, i dont understand from where did that dark stain come from.

Could someone help me?

thanks a lot! i fixed it, my spinnies look alright now ^ ^ one of the '94' in the offset was 'CD', i changed it and worked ^ ^ thanks icegoom.

and thanks for the comment, peter ac. A demo of it is arriving soon

By the way...i have another problem If i mod could change this thread title to "Annoying Bug [carriable blue block related]" id be thanked

It is indeed a problem with the blue block mario can pick and throw (map 16 -tile 12E). Look at the attached screen, it shows a vine after i pick the blue block, instead of the normal shining sprite gfx of the blue block. The bad thing is not only this...i also can't actually THROW the block, when Mario tries to throw it, it just disappears in his hands like dust. I'd like some help here too

ignore the status bar pallete problem

Ok guys, i'm not making this a poll (before a comment like "you should have made this a poll, stupid" is made) coz i want words, not only votes.
Nowadays there's a lot of people thinking only on ExGFX, and forgetting level design or making levels fun. I think there's a order in priority of a hack:

first: fun
second: level design
third: usage of ExGFX

Hacks like FPI's first one showed that level design + fun in high doses can make ExGFX forgettable, his game used only the SMW gfx and a hell of possibilities are offered to us by the original SMW gfx, the difference is in who is able to use those possibilities and who just prefer to rip ExGFX only and use older ideas of level design already made by Nintendo in the past.

My hack has ExGFX, a lot in fact, but i didn't forget the smw graphics. I try to make the level design original and use the various possibilities i can with those graphics. So, my question is: would people just be interested on me releasing a demo of my hack to see the ExGFX or would they care for level design and fun too? Because if people only care for ExGFX, then i think SMW hacking has reached a deep end when hackers like FPI and Sendy stopped releasing demos, and the SMAS ripping craziness started. I want fun hacks, not copy of older level designs and forgetting how many amazing things we can do with the SMW ones.

i think you should dark the grass pallette a bit, its too bright.

I see no problem with Mario though, in fact i think he looks great in it.

the thing is that the SMW original gfx aren't unbearably awful, in fact they are more beautiful than many games, despite the BG's being a bit bland. But see the castle set, it's indeed much better than any one from SMAS.
And i'd not play a hack with horrible gfx even if its level design is excellent, and this sounds contraditory, because level design would depend on the way you'd use those horrid gfx, and i don't think horrid gfx would add any good possibility to level design, but the smw pretty ones sure would.

hey mikeyk, i suggest a bandit that would carry Mario and to get rid of him you'd need to press the jump button until he releases Mario, i think it would be pretty cool.

Wow. Please tell me you are kidding. That can never be made since.... just because. He's huge, creates like 20 different types of sprites when he blasts stuff from his cannon, and I think DKC2 has a higher sprite capacity than SMW anyway.

Well i was indeed kidding (DoritoKiller apparently didnt get the joke too...sigh)

Where is the custom block for the donut block? I can't find it in SMW Central and i have a really old version of block tool, with dozens of C Blocks already installed.
