howdy. Im just starting to learn about the world of game hacking and im having a great time. Im currently hacking mega man 5. I was using megaFLE .41 for a little bit when i notcied there was a .42 version out, however, i cant get it to work. When it asks for the file name, i put in "megaman5" and nothing happenes. When i did the same thing with .41, it worked. The game is in the same directory as .41 and .42. any suggestions?

Hi. Im kinda new at all this and this has me all kinds of confused. Im not sure how to do it. I dont know if it matters, but im using megafle .42 for mega man 5. When i try to extract, it asks me for the following:

First $:
Last $:
File: (i know a file name goes here, ether the one ur making or the one ur inserting)
Offset$:

I tried looking around but i couldnt find anything that would help me.

Thanks

Any one know of any good documentation relating to the wide spectrum of nes rom hacking? Anything from sprite extracing/inserting and pallete hacking, to learning ASM and NSF. I found some already that look like they should be a good read. they are...

zdawg's NES rom hacking document, version .65

Title Screen Hacking Made Easy v1.00 by InVerse

The Definitive Guide to ROM Hacking for Complete Beginners v1.00 by InVerse

THE MADHACKER'S GUIDE TO NES POINTERS version 1.1

How to start hacking your own ROMs by Kasady

Im trying to get as many as i can so i can read them all and study them all at one time without looking for more documentation. If it helps, im doing a hack of Mega Man 5. Any more help or leads would be appreciative.

Thanks,
steve

Im currently working on MM5 and Im learning a lot. Im using nestical for general stuff and learning other things. The sprites in the game are scrambled (of course) and i got some questions.

1. I assume i have to extract the sprites and put them together in logical order myself before I can edit them. Can i reinsert the sprites in the game in their logical order or do i have to re scramble them once i edit them?

2. Going along with chaning sprites, can I change the color while working on them or do i have to change the pallets in the game for it to change color?

whats wrong with using nesticle? I used it already for editing a couple things (i.e what mega mans shot looks like, replace his shooter with a hand, etc...). Being able to see the changes right away is a big help.

How can i change a pallete for one thing without effecting everything else? For example, im trying to change the color for the CAPCOM logo in mega man 5. The hex value (from what i see) is 0F172702 for the color arangement. But when i try to change it, it changes an ass load of other things too (protomans scarf, sprite colors, etc..). Is there a way to only change these tiles without affecting everthing else?

when changing pallets, can u change colors pre tile (8x8 pixels) or do u have to do some asm stuff to get that specific? Also, how do u rearange sprites to edit when they are mixed in the first place? Is there any kind of logical order these are in or should i just number the sprites 1-30 (random number), arrange them so they look right, edit them, then put them back in number order?

I know ive been asking a lot of questions, but im so close to editing my rom fully that its painfull not to know. I really wanna do a good job, so just bear with me for a couple more days and ill be hacking like a hippie with nothing to do. (I know that was bad, but it made me laugh)

im sorry, i guess i didnt state the question correctly. Lets say i want to edit mega man. when you're editing, the mega man sprite is broken up and all jumbled. Is there any kind of logical order that i can use to put them together agian when editing, or do i have to treat it like a big puzzle?

Im just curiuos as to how other people mess around with their sprites. Im working on mm5 and the only way i see is to (for this example we will use mega man) number each tile 1 - 30 (random number, i dont remember how high it really goes), copy them to a new window, rearagne them in a puzzle like manner until it looks right, edit away, and then redistribute the tiles in numeratic order. With TLP you can open a side window and line ur sprites up without worrying about putting the tiles back. does YY_CHR have anything like that?

Anyway, just wondering how u all do it.

when u say long way, what do u mean? the only way i know of is to use nestical, edit a sprite, see what it changed, and write it down or somehitng and move on. Then, using what you know now, edit them to ur hearts content.

since we're on the subject of sprites, i have a pallet problem. I wanna change the Floating scarf in the beginning of Mega Man 5. I do a hex search for the colors and change all i can find. However, that damn scarf always stay the same. I dont think its compressed for i can see the scarf tiles when i open the name box or whatever its called. Any suggestions?
