Grey: "Well, I'd like to think it has something to do with you guys... Not me, but still."

A thought bubble-like cloud appeared above Grey's head, which he allowed his considerations to enter into. They appeared in stick figure form, of course.

The first few images were of a group of people passing through the star doors and growing and shrinking in size relative to their world...

"The professor's told us that we're able to change size relative to the world we go to if we're passing through a Star Door, right?"

The image changed as soon as he finished his sentence, switching instead to a monstrously large stick figure stomping on a bunch of smaller stick figures, the result of a drastic difference in physical size between the two worlds.

"Well, what if this happened? Someone went to Popstar and didn't use the Star Door to get there? They'd be a giant, or some kind of unstoppable, city-stomping monster!"

The image changed again, this time to a very small stick figure dodging between a great crowd of giants, another size relation error...

"And what if the reverse happened? Then we'd have miniature versions of people having to dodge between the legs of the natives of a larger world! Or worse..."

The image changed a final time, this time to a stick figure driving a rocket over to Popstar, passing through the Star Door, getting larger, and repeating the process until it was a gargantuan stick figure with a very large, very angry face on its very large head.

"What if someone looped the growth mechanic to become large, and IN CHARGE!? It'd be terrible!"

The thought bubble disappeared, and Grey cast his gaze over a crowd of blank stares. He blushed.

"Er, you know... Just sayin'."

Grey raised his hand.

Grey: "Isn't that excessively dangerous beyond all rational reason?"

Johnathan: "So then... You will go alone?"

Grey: "I gotta. I know that this timeline's Kalar is still alive... If I can find him, maybe I can help him."

The two men stood before a portal of darkness, the same one they were hurled through the first time they fled their world. The desert that they had ended up in had become Johnathan's home over time, though Grey himself had remained nomadic, eventually taking up residence in the house of Kirbynite and later his own territory in the Marble Gardens. Adventures were hardly Johnathan's suit anymore. He left that to Grey and his friends.

Grey straightened his vest and glasses as Johnathan rifled through his coat's pockets for something. He reached a hand into his breast pocket and pulled out a small pyramid-shaped object. Barely the size of his palm, it radiated with what might be the last remnant of the power of Psi.

Johnathan: "Will you need this?"

Grey shook his head.

Grey: "No, you need it more than me. That thing is what'll save this world someday, and it's what will someday make you an influential force in it. If anything happens while I'm gone, that Psi Core will become essential to your safety -- and the safety of those you care about. This is a solo mission. I have to go by myself."

Johnathan nodded and withdrew the object. He then shook his head disapprovingly.

Johnathan: "But why you? Why must you go alone?"

Grey: "Simple. If I'm consumed by the darkness, I'll be able to offer them nothing, and those who have gotten to know me here will eventually forget about me. Besides..."

He held out his hand, and his baseball bat shimmered into existence with a dull flash.

"...I have this to keep me safe. You do not."

Johnathan nodded his assent.

Johnathan: "Yes, I see. If you survive, do you plan to return?"

Grey: "That depends on who I find on the other side. I can't wait any longer. She's held the portal open for too long already. If I end up coming back, you'll know very soon whether or not I do. Time passes differently in our worlds, remember?"

Johnathan: "I do. We can thank Janus and Star for that, unfortunately."

Grey: "It may not be so bad if I end up coming back mere seconds after I leave from your perspective."

Johnathan was silent, but obviously disbelieving.

"Don't worry about me. I'll see you again."

Grey strode forward and stepped through the portal. He was instantly consumed, and the portal radiated a surge of Soul energy before closing in on itself, locking Johnathan in that desert wasteland forever. He smiled wanly, and nodded.

Johnathan: "I know."

Johnathan turned his back and began the long trek back to his barren residence. It would be centuries until he had anything important to do, after all...

---------------

A portal, this one similar to the one Shen had opened, reappeared in front of Ark, and moments later Grey dropped down out of it before Ark, his appearance drastically changed.

His vest had grown into a thin, mid-length peacoat of black felt. Within it lay several pockets that housed the myriad of gadgets and toys he had employed in his life as a human on this twisted version of Earth. Beneath it he was suited in white, immaculate and orderly, with a pair of black dress shoes to accompany him. He felt slightly more weighted down by this additional clothing, but understood its necessity. His coat's sleeves had been cut off at the shoulders, leaving him looking somewhat uncanny with an oversized wifebeater around his torso, but enjoying the feel of his old clothes. He cast an eye to Ark and grinned.

Grey: "Hey there. S'been a long time."

He looked at Ark's feet, and again at his own. Indeed, with the coming of a pair of people whose hearts were strong and intact, the world seemed to be regrowing already. Grey laughed softly and drew out his bat.

"The Pasttime says to me that we've come back for a reason. Do you happen to know it?"

Grey grimaced at Kirbynite.

Grey: "Is that seriously all you're worried about? What if that puppy not having his chew toy is the catalyst for the successful genocide of the Armenian populace? What then, huh?"

Grey readied his weapon...

Grey: "I remember nothing more than what a stronger man once told me... The greatest effort possible is what she strove for. Therefore, her Heartless would more than likely expect nothing less."

He furthered his memories to nothing more than myths and legends from days long, long past.

"Her heart was supposed to be her biggest weakness. When there was something she truly cared for, she couldn't bring herself to destroy it. But without that, she's become for some reason so much stronger... A behemoth, to be sure. And yet, this is nothing more than her physical body, a representation of the pinnacle of human strength, agility, and beauty. Any advantage I'd have over her is moot in this form..."

I know, I know: It'll seem like advertising at first, but I swear there's an alterior motive. Check out the bottom link in my sig. It's a link to Kirbynite's new oekaki board, Scribble Gardens. It's run off of ShiPainter and Oekaki Poteto 5. You pretty much draw whatever you want with a mouse or tablet using the tools that are provided for you in the applet. And yes, though it's not preferred, you can flag stuff as NSFW.

Anyway, Taryn gave the OK for me to post this, so... take a look at it! It's really really fun.

And for those of you who don't have layouts on, here's a link. If you do draw something, though you'll obviously be able to see it there, post it here too!

Well, thus far I'm enjoying it... The game's made me laugh on multiple occasions, and I really like the reappearance of the Prinny Squad, being my favorite running characters in all the more recent NIS games. Music's not so bad, and I appreciate the hub overworld layout, even if it's really nothing more than a fluffy GUI for the menus and shops. The combat? Same as always. But that's not a bad thing at all.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have more ass to kick.

Grey whistled innocently as Draco was thrown backwards suddenly by one of the weenies moving at an alarming rate. Any subsequent attempts to rush at the plate of delicious snacks resulted in Draco colliding with a wall, completely intangible and thus far interminable as to its source. No weenies for him today!

The completely unknown figure continued to watch Teddylot and Kirbynite intently, taking a look at the array of buttons on his desk...

???: "Hm, hm, hm... Yes, Teddylot and Kirbynite. Keep going. Soon you will find out the secret."

He pressed a small button, and a small hole to nowhere appeared in front of the two walkers as they went towards the edge of Neo Grape Gardens without a care in the world. It was a trap! For sure. All that needed to happen was for them to walk straight into it. It's not like the hole was too small for anything more than a foot being stuck for a few seconds to happen, of course.

At least, the dark and shadowy fellow hoped. This would be a test of their intelligence. If they walked into the hole, they'd be far too stupid for him to deal with. It was right in front of them, and it was blatantly not there before... The only thing stopping them from walking over and straight past it would be their dumb curiousity.

Perhaps he had to make things harder...

He pressed another button, and a small wooden sign labeled "Candy!" appeared in front of the hole with an arrow pointing downward.

This would be good.

Grey: "There's a reason why I have this weapon... Nijote, I'm sorry we couldn't do anything more for you."

He sighed. His psychic attacks would do nothing against this darkness. A woman like Nijote didn't deserve such a fate, to be sure. Why her heart fell in the first place Grey would never know, but what he did know was that it deserved to be free. He grasped his blade in both hands, and drew it back as the power of Light filled it.

Just, however, as he was about to execute her, the beast roared in agony; another assailant! It was thrown sideways by the fierce strike of a heavy, blunt object. There was a spark of light at the point of impact, and a large, hammer-like object could be seen ricocheting off of its massive body. It fell sideways, whimpering.

???: "Inversion!!!"

There was an explosion of light as the hammer flew back into the hands of an airborne being dressed in bulky street clothes of a red, black, and white scheme. While still in the skies of the dark world, it swung the hammer downward and ripped open a portal to the Void. Before sucking in anything beyond a few dust particles, it wavered and reversed itself, firing a ray of darkness at the recovering Heartless. The ray hurtled forward, concentrating itself on the behemoth creature's torso and spearing it through, killing it instantly. The being landed, and his face could be seen a bit more clearly. Grey balked at the sight of it. Could it be? No... This one would have to be his...

Grey: "You..."

Grey walked towards the being, who barely took time to catch his breath before turning to face Grey. He held the hammer tightly, prepared to strike. The hammer did not weigh him down in the slightest, in spite of its size and bulk.

???: "Me."

Grey reached out, holding his bat at his side. He felt nothing inside this man's heart. No feelings, no emotions, no love or hate. Just thought and will.

Grey: "You're a Nobody."

The being smirked.

???: "That's awfully impolite of you to say."

Grey: "You beat that beast with that particular weapon. Who are you?"

He stepped towards the Nobody, who turned away and began walking.

???: "Forget it. Don't ask stupid questions, you know who I am."

Grey: "Janus', right? Kalar took his body."

Grey stopped, and the Nobody stopped as well. He paused, and then continued walking.

???: "Good thinking. I'll be seeing you around, though. I just wanted to let you know I exist, and what better way than showing you that I'm powerful enough to beat your ass up and down the street? It seemed fitting, considering the world we live in. You live in. Lived in. Good day."

He began to make more distance between Ark and Grey, who had one more question to ask.

Grey: "Wait! What's your name?"

The being stopped once more, considered, and kept walking.

???: "I seem to have forgotten. Who knows! Maybe it doesn't matter."

He turned around and kept walking, this time backwards in the same direction he had been traveling in. The man then called back to Grey, his voice now almost barely audible in the rising winds of the wasteland.

"How's this? I'm Nameless. Literally! It's a pun, ha ha. Laugh. It'll do you good. Or so I hear. And keep walking! We could use a bit more green."

He turned, and in a few seconds was gone.

Grey: "About 3:20 PM, now..."

His belt fastened around his arm snugly, lifted and suspended by his telekinetic skills. He inspected it: there didn't seem to be many buttons, but one was clearly marked. He pressed it, and instantly the light around him was refracted as he faded into nothing.

'This is interesting...' he thought. It was akin to his ability to psychically divert light around him, but far more effective... This, for example, wouldn't allow him to give off a heat signature, which could be detected by IR goggles. It also required no concentration, which was good. Chances are if the team wanted to go for a non-intervention path in the past, telekinesis would come in handy for making sure they didn't leave fingerprints on anything or accidentally jostle anything that didn't deserve to be jostled.

Grey: "We won't be meeting Garro here. I saw him die by Kalar's blade."

Grey strode plaintively into Garro's former lair... This church was of allegiance to no god; Garro had formed it for all who simply wished to worship to come to.

"In a time of need, Garro was one of the few who had realized that the gods would willingly unite for the sake of the people. Even the violent and aggressive gods, who had no bread broken with other deities, were allowed within this church's hallowed walls. There was one rule: No worshippers were to argue or fight with others based on their beliefs."

Ark: "How could that be possible? Humans are nothing if not always in constant conflict with each other..."

Grey: "Garro preached tolerance above all else, and that rule had never been broken once until a fateful day, far in this world's past."

Grey came to a stop in the exact middle of the church, designed after a modern Christian layout of pews and an altar, and looked to the great stone planet that hung graciously before them.

Ark: "I see... Continue, if you will."

Grey: "Garro himself believed in the planet: It was she who had spawned the gods, not the other way around. She had spawned life, and life had in turn created sentience, which begat faith. Faith was Garro's power: It was from this place, this gathering roundtable discussion of the gods, that he drew his strength. I'll tell you a story..."

---------------

It was late. Garro sighed wearily as he tried again. 'One more time,' he told himself, 'It has to work this time.'

He would be the one to refill this quickly darkening world with light. He knew that in a time of need, the gods would call upon him as a savior, and that he could purge the world of the evil that slowly set itself upon its surface. It was his role as an avatar of faith. It was only a matter of time, when he had to call, and when they would answer. Perhaps the world's darkest hour was to come before...

It was pretty dark already.

Garro knelt at his altar, his knees sinking into the crimson shag carpet that lined the floorways. The wood felt hard beneath the carpet as Garro placed his hands on the altar that stood before him. His church had grown decrepit as the world turned to ruin. No man wanted to worship, and the church had fallen into disrepair, holes in the roof and walls abound. The huge stone earth that he had erected as its main monument glowed white the moment he lay his hands down, and he exhaled, clearing his mind to summon the power of the gods themselves...

Kalar: "Awfully late for a man of the cloth to be awake, wouldn't you say?"

Garro froze, his heart filling with a fear that he knew all too well nowadays. Was now the time?

Garro: "Kalar. I'm surprised you had the gall to come here, after all you've done."

He rose to his feet and felt inside of his long coat, now a ceremonal white color instead of the typical brown. Both of his pistols were inside, and from their weight he determined that they were both indeed fully loaded. He swallowed in terror.

Kalar: "I've done very little by myself, old friend. Everything in this world is being consumed by darkness. People are bringing themselves over the edge. Fear, hatred, anger, depression... It's all spiraling into nothingness. I've got little of a hand in it."

It was true: Garro was afraid. This was the first time he had ever truly felt fear, a fear for his own life like no other. Before this madness had engulfed their world, before the coming of the darkness and the consuming Heartless, Garro had always had his allies by his side to keep him safe. He was by no means a weak man; he played as much the role of a savior as the saved. Now, he felt his greatest ally and his closest friend standing not one hundred feet behind him, blade drawn and killer instinct alive and well.

Garro pulled a pistol from his coat, whirled around, and pointed it at the being that had appeared in the doorway to his sacred home. He gasped in surprise. The man who stood before him was his friend no longer, warped and changed by the relinquishment of his own will to the shadows. His pistol shook in his trembling hand as Garro looked over his former fellow.

The black suit he had grown so familiar with had been completely mended from its tattered form. The blonde hair Garro had seen through so many adventures and battles had grown black with hatred and dark might. His eyes passed over Kalar's body, observing the changes in his stance and posture.

Kalar had become more demonic and draconic in nature as the result of his ability to integrate differing energies into himself. His skin was a dull rust color, no longer the pale white that it had once been. He had a tail, a long, thin spinal extension that could thrash about and impale errant foes. His eyes glowed a bright yellow, rounded and eerie like the Heartless he could control. There was no turning back for him at this point. It was obvious that he had become completely consumed by darkness.he was a more upright man now, supported by the pair of black wings that had sprouted from his back. They were little more than leathery flaps that extended from drooping, bony extensions of his shoulder blades, but Garro knew firsthand that they were capable of propelling Kalar at speeds greater even than Garro's own aerial mobility. The once-familiar scythe that constantly lay on Kalar's back rested in his hands now, the curved blade straightened and thickened, a result of its melding with the Nightmare. Yet more did the weapon change since last seen: The blade now glowed with a blue hue, a familiar soul radiating from it, as though it had been absorbed and integrated into Kalar's being, much like everything else the dark warrior observed.

The energy of that spirit and soul... The near-transparent blade had become opague with it. Garro instantly knew who it was that inhabited that blade.

Garro: "Little of a hand... How dare you. That blade has His soul in it, does it not?"

Kalar grinned a fanged, monstrous grin. He shook his head, and held the weapon out before Garro. The very motion it made caused the air around it to ripple...

Kalar: "No... You and I both know that that is impossible. I will say this, though. He was consumed. Those who are consumed serve only to feed my power. Think what you will of that. If only his sacrifice had not been in vain... I did not see her die, but death or not she is exiled from this realm forever. A shame, too. That Guardian Soul of hers would have been delicious."

Garro: "Bastard!"

Tears in his eyes, Garro dashed forward at Kalar, firing blast after holy blast from his pistols, all of which were easily deflected by a quick whirl of the scythe's blue blade. As Garro neared, Kalar swung mightily, bringing the weapon down on Garro. The priest raised a pistol upward in defense, its blessed metal catching the crook of the scythe only inches from where it'd have made a fatal gash. He could feel Kalar's raw strength overpowering him as he held fast, ducking out of the way of Kalar's withdrawal.

Garro spied a shine beneath the right arm sleeve of Kalar's suit: the metal arm and leg that Kalar sported had clearly gone unchanged. However, he also knew that...

Kalar: "Ha!"

Kalar swung forward, firing his metal hand like a piston at Garro, who lay prone on the ground after rolling away from his initial attack. Garro pushed himself up and out of the way mere milleseconds before Kalar struck the ground where he lay. Leaping backwards, Garro pulled out his second pistol. A spray of six shooter bullets flew out of his coat pocket as he swung his empty revolver open and caught the bullets inside its chamber, a testament to his gunslinging expertise. He landed on a row of pews neatly, and perched there in wait for Kalar's response.

Kalar did nothing more than grin the same grin he had been grinning and flew forward at inhuman speed, drawing his scythe back for another strike. A swing and a miss later, Garro was airborne, a pair of gossamer angelic wings supporting him. There was no time for words anymore. He went full akimbo, firing both pistols rapidly and unleashing a dozen blasts before reloading and waiting for a better position to attack from. In the air, he had more options than he did on the ground, but he had to contend with Kalar's speed as well as his own tactical prowess.

Kalar let out a yell and a wave of darkness flew outward from his body, dispelling the blasts as easily as he had blocked them. He flew at Garro again, swinging his scythe over and over again, each time a narrow miss but growing hairs closer to that sweet death that he had longed to deliver.

Garro could not help but wonder how things had gotten to be like this... As he parried and deflected shot after shot from Garro's guns, did not Kalar wonder the same thing?

No... The darkness directed his thoughts now. He was a being of pure evil, and Garro knew full well that Kalar was doing nothing more than playing with him. Kalar could have killed him ten times over, and yet he stayed, continuing to play. Perhaps it was because he had all the time in the world on his hands. Or was it perhaps that he was hoping somehow that he would not have to kill his best friend? Garro held onto that thought in his mind. It was what drove him, to know that maybe somewhere down inside of the darkness and consumption, struggling for dominance with the shadows was still a Kalar that was capable of being a friend and ally. A Kalar that was still capable of loving.

As Garro raised his pistol to fire again, this time at point-blank range with Kalar, his gun was swept aside in a flash by the haft of Kalar's scythe. Garro's eyes widened. Kalar swung forward, not giving Garro an inch to recover.

Slice! The scythe's blade buried itself in his chest. Garro choked, feeling his own blood rise in his throat, and looked down to see himself hanging in the air from Kalar's blade. His legs dangled as his vision blurred and his wings disappeared in a cloud of ethereal feathers. The scythe had impaled him completely, starting from the ribs on his right side and coming out completely through the left. He could feel it pierce through his heart and lungs, hot and searing. Through it all, though, Garro felt no pain, only the heat of the blade. Had his spine been sliced, as well? He looked forward to Kalar...

Garro: "You... killed me...?"

His words were little more than a gurgle of blood. The friend he knew was gone. His white coat stained with red as blood blended with cotton and polyester, starting as a small spot that grew around the penetrating blade. Finally, Kalar whipped the scythe towards himself and ripped through Garro's flesh, nearly separating him in two as the priest fell towards the floor of the church. He hit the ground with a dull thud, and a pool of blood grew from behind his back.

Garro's thoughts blended together, and he couldn't help but wonder if his gods had failed him...

Kalar: "Not quite yet..."

Garro couldn't move, but he could feel life draining from him. The demon man that stood before him was naught but a shadow of what it once was in his eyes...

"I prefer a twinge of irony to my deaths. Janus, once devoted to living free, now condemned to lay within my blade. And you, old friend..."

He reached for one of Garro's pistols, which had fallen from his hand at the strike of Kalar's scythe. It too lay bathed in blood, as the pool that leaked from Garro's body extended further and further.

"...Shall die by the very thing you swore your life to."

Garro: "You're... not Kalar..."

Kalar reached into Garro's torn coat and rummaged among the bloody pockets for a single bullet. He loaded it into the empty chamber of Garro's gun, and cocked it.

Kalar: "That's all in how you perceive it. I look like him, act like him, sound like him, dress like him. Am I not him?"

Garro: "Kalar wouldn't..."

Kalar pointed the pistol directly at Garro's head, pressing its barrel against his sweating brow. He drew his face close to Garro's...

Kalar: "Oh yes. I would."

Kalar fired. A few moments later, he calmly stood up, placed the pistol in the breast pocket of his suit, and walked out of the church. A rainstorm had started up, washing away the blood from his suit and flooding through the roof of the cathedral. It, too, washed away the blood of Garro, the fallen priest. The body, however, remained to be seen.

---------------

Grey: "...I still don't know exactly what happened to him. Only that this place is now no longer the sanctuary it once was. Still the wonder of it all! That this statue would still be standing after all this time. There's another interesting fact that I feel is worth mention..."

Ark: "Hm?"

Grey paced back and forth throughout the cathedral's aisles.

Grey: "Garro was never consumed by the Heartless. It seems as though his body, and therefore his heart, disappeared entirely from this place. Perhaps that was the humanity in Kalar. He wished only that his best friend not suffer the same fate as him. I wonder then, if there is hope for him... If he is still alive."

I am thus far deeply enjoying the item world. Often, I'll just pop in the game to run a few ranks through it. I've also realized that it's not necessarily your level that determines how powerful you are, but your gear. I'm a weakling thus far: My level 15 Adell, however, has over 500 hit points and qualifies for the high atk and high spd felons already, and it's only the end of Chapter 3. I can't stand using Tink, either... I've actually yet to hire anyone for my team other than a Prinny and the standard five you start with. It's far easier to raise a small team of high-powered killers than it is a group of midlevels.

This smells like advertising, but feels like genius deviousness.

I'll allow it.

Grey stepped up to Guts, his expression and gait frank and dismissive.

Grey: "I think it's obvious that he took the one step more. Anyway, now that we've got ourselves a power game playing, what say we win it? We're close to the temple, while we can't exactly throttle wide open like bats out of hell and crash the gates, this should be a simple in and out operation."

Grey: "...."

Bring Garro back? Certainly, he'd be a boon, but it was likely that he'd be hurt or die again, if the case became one of him advancing to the front lines in their struggle. Grey had a serious problem with helping those particular people unless it was an absolutely dire situation, as well. The world had already ended, so the situation was hardly dire, simply a daunting task.

Grey: "If we bring him back, what will become of his body? Will he know of the events that have transpired?"

Phoenix nodded. The spirits watched the worlds, even as the worlds themselves were destroyed. The heart of Garro was within Hero's seal, and since he was closest to the world when it died, Garro was the most likely candidate for a clean resurrection. His rebirth would be easy, his body pristine. His power, however...

Phoenix: "Yes, he will know of everything that has happened. However, he will not be the same person you once knew in many different ways. The old gods are long gone, and the few that remain are lesser in power than ever, without the faith of the strong-hearted to keep them preserved. He will be able to invoke their names in only the weakest sense... It is like a muscle that has atrophied. In time, his faith alone will sustain them, but for the moment he is held fast."

Grey: "So what you're saying is we have to keep him safe until he's strong enough to help us again."

Ark stepped forward for an interposition.

Ark: "If I may, it is not uncommon for the recently resurrected to succumb to a weakened state for a period. He will likely be in such a state for only a short time."

Grey considered... It was a good idea. They would need as much help as they could get, for sure.

Grey: "Fine. Let's do it. But I want you to make sure he wants to come back, first."

Grey: "I think we'll be fine as long as they haven't taken a vow of silence. If anything, I'll see if I can get a reading from them if they don't speak the same language as us (which is very likely)."

He shivered and closed his eyes, focusing his thoughts on keeping his skin at a reasonable temperature. His eyes donned a dull green glow, and his skin flowed with psychic energies that kept the cold from getting too out of hand.

"This reminds me of the Dark Ages..."
